Yes—you can get temporary internet access for a week through a short-term mobile plan or eSIM, your phone’s hotspot, a dedicated portable hotspot, or public Wi-Fi. The right choice depends on where you’ll use it, your device, data needs, and how reliably you need to connect. “Wi-Fi” may mean a local wireless network, or a cellular connection shared with your devices.
Which one-week internet option fits your situation?
Short-term prepaid plan or eSIM
If you have a compatible phone, a short-term mobile plan may be the simplest option. As a U.S.-specific example, T-Mobile Prepaid lists a seven-day US Pass eSIM for $25 plus taxes and fees, with 50 GB of premium 5G data in the U.S. and 14 GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data. The plan requires an eSIM-capable, compatible device. T-Mobile says the pass activates at purchase, so check the current terms and timing before paying; prices and offers can change. See T-Mobile’s seven-day US Pass details and its compatibility and plan terms.
Tethering from your existing phone
If your current mobile plan includes hotspot service, you may be able to share your phone’s cellular connection with a laptop, tablet, or other device. Check the plan’s hotspot data allowance, speed limits or thresholds, and coverage where you’ll be. An “unlimited” phone data plan does not necessarily include unlimited high-speed hotspot data; the cited T-Mobile offer, for example, lists a separate 14 GB high-speed hotspot allowance.
Dedicated portable hotspot
A portable hotspot uses a cellular connection to create a Wi-Fi network for your devices. It can be useful when several devices need access or you prefer not to tether through your phone. The device alone is not an internet connection: you also need an active, compatible mobile data plan and usable network coverage. The FCC describes portable or mobile Wi-Fi hotspots as devices used with commercially available mobile wireless internet service; that definition appears in an E-Rate order, not a consumer buying recommendation. T-Mobile lists a separate prepaid data option for hotspot devices and tablets.

Public Wi-Fi
Libraries, hotels, cafes, airports, and other venues may provide Wi-Fi, but access hours, sign-in requirements, and availability vary by location. Treat it as a local option or backup, not a guaranteed connection for the entire week. The FTC says public Wi-Fi is usually safe today because most websites use encryption; check for HTTPS or a lock symbol. For sensitive activity such as banking or online purchases on an unsecured network, CISA advises using cellular data instead. Read the FTC’s public Wi-Fi guidance and CISA’s advice on using internet-enabled devices while traveling.
What to check before choosing
- Where you’ll connect: Confirm that the service is available in your country and that its cellular network covers the specific area you’ll visit. Public Wi-Fi access also depends on the venue.
- Full cost and timing: Check taxes and fees, when service starts, whether it renews, and what happens when the term ends. T-Mobile’s cited seven-day pass activates at purchase, so buying early may use part of the period.
- Data and speed: Compare the high-speed data included for phone use with any separate hotspot allowance, as well as what happens when an allowance is used. Do not assume that data for your phone and data shared with other devices are interchangeable.
- Device compatibility: For an eSIM, verify that your phone supports eSIM and meets the plan’s compatibility requirements; check whether it must be unlocked. For a dedicated hotspot, confirm that the carrier accepts the device and supports its network bands.
- Number of devices: A phone hotspot may be sufficient for a small number of devices. A dedicated hotspot is another way to share cellular service, but requires its own compatible plan.
- Privacy needs: For sensitive transactions, prefer cellular data over an unsecured public Wi-Fi network.
What the example does—and does not—tell you
The T-Mobile offer is one current U.S. example, not a worldwide recommendation or a guarantee of coverage at your destination. Its listed price is $25 plus taxes and fees, and its stated allowances are 50 GB of premium 5G data in the U.S. and 14 GB of high-speed mobile hotspot data. Those are details of that offer, not general market rates or a promise that the plan is suitable for every device or location. Check the linked terms before purchase.
