For most people playing Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit for the first time, choose Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit Remastered. Electronic Arts says it keeps the original cops-versus-racers experience while adding enhanced visuals, cross-platform asynchronous competition, the main downloadable content, an updated career experience, and new photo-mode options. EA describes that included content as six extra hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges.
The original can still be the sensible choice if you already own it on a system you use, only want its core events, or find the remaster too expensive at your current store. The two editions should not be treated as cross-compatible multiplayer versions: players of the original and remaster are not documented as being able to play together.
Quick comparison
| Decision point | Original | Hot Pursuit Remastered |
|---|---|---|
| Core cops-versus-racers game | Yes | Yes, presented as the same core experience |
| Included main downloadable content | Not included in the original base release unless purchased separately | Included, according to Electronic Arts |
| Additional content figure | Not established for the base release | EA describes six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges |
| Visual presentation | Original presentation | Enhanced visuals; EA’s Steam material shows brighter night scenes |
| Cross-platform competition | Not documented as a feature of the original | Supported through asynchronous Autolog competition |
| Career and photo mode | Original implementation | EA describes an updated career experience for both cop and racer, plus new photo-mode options |
| Interface and transitions | Original interface | Meristation observed HUD and interface changes and faster menu and event transitions |
| Platforms listed by EA | Platform availability depends on the original edition you own | PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch |
| PlayStation 5 access | Depends on your original PlayStation version and compatibility | PlayStation says the PS4 version can be played on PS5, although some PS4 features may be absent |
The table gives the practical answer: the remaster is the more complete purchase for a new player, while an existing owner should pay only if the additions solve a real need.

Enhanced visuals, without a published performance promise
EA identifies enhanced visuals as a central remaster feature. Its Steam announcements include a side-by-side visual comparison and specifically describe brighter night scenes. That supports a clear presentation upgrade, but it does not establish a universal resolution or frame-rate advantage.

Platform hardware and display settings can affect how the game looks. The available EA material does not provide a reliable platform-by-platform technical table, so claims such as a fixed resolution, a guaranteed frame rate, or identical image quality on every system would go beyond the documented evidence. Treat the visual change as an official enhancement rather than a benchmark result.
Cross-platform competition through Autolog
The remaster adds cross-platform asynchronous multiplayer competition powered by Autolog. “Asynchronous” matters: the feature is designed around comparing performances, times, scores, and progress rather than promising that every platform’s players occupy one shared real-time race.
The PC manual says players can enable Crossplay and find cross-platform friends in the EA Friends list. In practical terms, you can compare or compete with people using supported platforms instead of being restricted to the same hardware family. The feature is especially useful when your friends are split between PC, consoles, and Switch.
Crossplay applies to the remaster’s supported ecosystem. There is no documented basis for saying that an owner of the original can join a remastered player’s session, so do not buy the remaster expecting the two editions to share multiplayer races.
Main downloadable content is bundled
EA’s launch announcement says the remaster includes “all the main DLC — delivering an extra six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges.” Those numbers are Electronic Arts’ description of the package, not an independent measurement.
For a new player, bundling removes the need to identify and purchase separate content later. For an original owner who already bought the downloadable content, the value is narrower: you are mainly paying for the remaster’s presentation, cross-platform features, interface changes, and access on a supported platform.

Updated career experience for both sides of the law
EA also calls out an updated career experience for both cop and racer. The distinction matters because Hot Pursuit is built around switching roles: one side pursues and intercepts, while the other evades and completes events. The remaster’s career presentation is intended to keep both paths in the same package rather than treating one as an optional extra.

The available material does not specify a new story, a redesigned progression economy, or a different event count beyond the DLC figure above. It is safer to understand “updated” as an improved career presentation and experience, not as proof of a completely rebuilt campaign.
New photo-mode options
New photo-mode options are another launch feature identified by EA. This gives players more ways to frame cars, police pursuits, and scenery while documenting their events. The announcement does not enumerate every camera control or output setting, so the meaningful comparison is simply that the remaster adds photo-mode functionality beyond the original implementation described in the launch materials.
Interface and menu changes
A contemporary Meristation review reported HUD and interface changes and faster menu and event transitions. That is a reviewer’s observation, not a controlled timing test or a guarantee that every platform behaves identically. It nevertheless points to a day-to-day improvement: the remaster may feel less cumbersome when moving between events and menus even when the underlying race structure is familiar.
What stays familiar
The remaster is not presented as a new racing design. EA describes it as the original cops-versus-racers experience brought to additional platforms with visual, multiplayer, and content updates. That means the reason to choose it is usually access and completeness, not a wholly different game.
Recommended Free Tools
If you already enjoy the original’s event structure and only want the same races, the remaster may not justify a second purchase at a high price. Conversely, someone who has never played the game does not have to choose between a bare base package and a later expansion hunt: the remaster is the edition that combines the core game with the main DLC in one purchase.

Platform availability and compatibility
Where the remaster is listed
EA’s official page lists the remaster for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch. The 2020 announcement gave November 6 as the release date for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC, followed by November 13 for Switch.
“Xbox” in the broad platform listing should not be read as a promise about every current Xbox storefront or hardware feature. Check the store page for the exact console generation, edition, backward-compatibility behavior, and regional availability before purchasing.
Playing on PlayStation 5
PlayStation states that the PS4 version can be played on PS5, while warning that some PS4 features may be absent. This is a compatibility qualification, not evidence of a separate native PS5 edition or a guaranteed feature-for-feature match. If PS5 is your target system, read the current PlayStation listing and its feature notes before checkout.
Switch release timing
The Switch version arrived one week after the other launch platforms, on November 13, 2020. That date difference does not by itself indicate a different content package. EA’s remaster announcement presents the Switch release as part of the same return to new platforms, including the cross-platform competition message.
Which version should a new player choose?
Choose the remaster when you want the complete package
- You have never played Hot Pursuit and want the main DLC included.
- Your friends use different supported platforms and asynchronous cross-platform competition is important.
- You want the enhanced visual presentation, updated career experience, and new photo-mode options without assembling them separately.
- You are buying for PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, or Switch and the current store listing supports your hardware.
This recommendation is based on the documented feature set, not on a claim that every technical aspect is superior on every platform.
When the original may be enough
- You already own the original and mainly want its core events on a working system.
- You do not need cross-platform comparisons or the remaster’s bundled challenges.
- You have already purchased the original’s relevant downloadable content.
- The remaster’s current regional price is high enough that the additions do not justify buying the game again.
In those cases, keep the original unless a specific remaster feature changes your decision. There is no reason to repurchase solely because a newer label exists.

Which version should an original owner choose?
Use a feature-by-feature test rather than assuming ownership automatically makes the remaster poor value.
Buy again for cross-platform friends
If your regular competitors are on other supported platforms, the remaster’s Autolog-based cross-platform competition is the clearest reason to upgrade. Confirm that Crossplay is enabled and that friends appear in the EA Friends list on your platform.
Buy again for the bundled challenges
EA’s six-hour and more-than-30-challenge description gives the remaster a substantial content reason to exist. Compare that package with the downloadable content you already own. If you already have the same content in the original, the extra value comes from convenience and the other remaster changes, not from receiving unfamiliar events.
Buy again for access on a different platform
Moving from an unavailable or inconvenient original platform to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox, or Switch can make the remaster practical even when the underlying game is familiar. Platform choice also determines which friends you can easily reach and which compatibility rules apply.
Keep the original when the differences are cosmetic to you
If you play alone, have no interest in photo mode, do not need cross-platform comparisons, and are satisfied with the original’s visuals and menus, the remaster’s documented additions may not change your routine. Compare the current price before spending anything; prices vary by country, platform, edition, and promotion.

How to make the purchase decision safely
- Identify your platform. Write down the exact device you will use: PC, PlayStation 4, PS5 through the PS4 version, Xbox, or Switch.
- Check the current regional store page. Confirm that the edition is available in your country, that it runs on your hardware, and whether the listing is digital, physical, or both.
- List what you already own. Record whether you have the original and whether its downloadable content was purchased. This prevents paying twice for challenges you already possess.
- Decide whether cross-platform competition matters. If your friends use other supported platforms, verify that the remaster listing and account setup support Crossplay for your device.
- Value the additions you will actually use. Choose the remaster for included DLC, enhanced presentation, updated career features, photo mode, or interface changes that matter to you—not for an unverified frame-rate claim.
- Compare the current price with your alternative. Prices and inventory change by region and storefront. A low-cost original you already own may be better value than a full-price remaster; a discounted remaster may make the opposite choice easy.
Multiplayer: what “cross-platform” means here
The remaster’s documented multiplayer improvement is cross-platform asynchronous competition. It lets supported-platform players connect, compare, and compete through Autolog, with cross-platform friends managed through the EA Friends list on PC.
Best Value
- Need For Speed: Hot Pursuit contains 1-8 player online support as well as leaderboards
- Play as either cops and racers in both a tremendously deep, fully-defined single player career and a groundbreaking multiplayer experience across all race modes
- The Need For Speed Autolog system connects friends directly to each other's games, enabling them to compare and share all their experiences and challenges
- Whether taking down suspects with a variety of cop weapons or using evasion equipment to outsmart the cops, players will always have a method for gaining an edge over their opponent
- Feel the power of busting suspects in supercharged cop interceptors like the Lamborghini Reventon or outsmarting the law as a racer in high performance supercars like the Pagani Zonda Cinque
This wording does not establish unrestricted real-time multiplayer across every mode, nor does it connect the original release to the remaster. Think of it as a broader comparison and competition network inside the remastered edition. Before buying for a group, agree that everyone will use the remaster and confirm each person’s platform support.
Content and value: interpreting the “six hours” figure
The “six hours of gameplay and more than 30 challenges” figure is EA’s promotional description of the main DLC included with the remaster. It should not be converted into a guaranteed completion time for every player. Racing ability, event choices, retries, and whether someone completes every challenge can all affect actual play time.
The figure is still useful for purchase planning: the remaster is not merely a texture update. It packages a sizable set of additional challenges that a first-time player would otherwise need to locate and buy separately, subject to the exact edition and store listing in your region.

Assuming original and remaster players can race together
Cross-platform support in the remaster does not mean cross-version support. Put every player on the same remastered edition before planning a group session.
Expecting a guaranteed resolution or frame rate
EA’s visual announcements establish enhanced visuals and brighter night scenes, but the cited material does not provide a complete technical comparison. Do not buy based on a promised number that the platform listing does not state.
Ignoring the PS5 feature qualification
The PS4 version is playable on PS5, but PlayStation notes that some PS4 features may be absent. Read the current compatibility notes if a specific PS5 function is important to you.
Counting DLC twice
An original owner who bought the downloadable content should treat the remaster’s bundle as included convenience, not automatically as six new hours. Compare the content you already possess with what the remaster package contains.
Using old price or stock information
Launch dates and feature descriptions remain useful, but current price, inventory, and regional editions change. Check the store you will actually use immediately before purchase.
Bottom-line recommendation by player type
| Player | Best default choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| First-time player | Remastered | Main DLC included, enhanced presentation, cross-platform competition, updated career, and photo-mode additions. |
| Original owner without the DLC | Usually remastered if the price is acceptable | The bundled challenges and newer features provide the clearest upgrade case. |
| Original owner with the DLC | Compare price and priorities | You are mainly paying for presentation, cross-platform features, interface changes, and platform access. |
| Player buying for a mixed-platform group | Remastered for everyone | The documented cross-platform competition is a remaster feature, not a bridge between editions. |
| Player satisfied with an existing copy | Keep the original unless a feature matters | A second purchase is unnecessary if you do not need the remaster’s additions. |
Choose Hot Pursuit Remastered when you want the most complete and connected version available on your platform. Choose the original when you already own it, its core experience is enough, and the remaster’s additions do not justify the current price.
