Flo says a QR code for a birthday present was meant to be a quick task. Instead, the search ran into account requirements, export limits or watermarks, and subscriptions for dynamic codes. That frustration became the starting point for QRcodly, the open-source project Flo describes in a first-person article on DEV Community.
Why build another free QR code generator?
Flo’s goal was practical: make a QR code that would reveal a surprise when someone scanned a birthday gift. Flo says the process was complicated by services that required accounts, restricted or watermarked exported codes, or charged for dynamic QR codes. The account is Flo’s experience, not an independent survey of QR-code services.
The friction led Flo to build QRcodly as a side project. In the article, Flo summarizes the underlying concern this way: “The switching cost isn’t technical, it’s physical: ink on paper.” Once a code is printed on a gift, menu, flyer, or package, changing what it does can be harder than changing a link on a screen.
Static and dynamic QR codes work differently
Static codes put the content in the image
Flo describes a static QR code as “just data encoded into pixels.” Its encoded content might be a web address, plain text, or another supported payload. Because the content is part of the printed code, changing a static code’s destination generally means creating and printing a different code.

Dynamic codes route through a redirect
In Flo’s explanation, a dynamic QR code contains a short URL that redirects to a destination. Flo puts it simply: “A dynamic QR code is a 302 redirect.” Since the short URL stays the same, its destination can be changed without replacing the printed image, provided the redirect service continues to operate and permits the change.
That convenience also creates a dependency. If the printed short URL is controlled by a provider, access to the redirect—and therefore the code’s usefulness—depends on that provider’s service and terms. Flo argues that this can leave a business paying to preserve a route already printed on physical materials. The article presents this as a critique, not evidence that every provider uses the same policies.

What Flo says QRcodly offers
Flo presents QRcodly as a free, open-source QR code generator and management platform released under the MIT license. According to the article, its free tier includes static and dynamic codes, unlimited scans, styling and logo uploads, scan analytics, and a built-in URL shortener, without a credit card requirement or an expiry trick. Flo describes Pro features for businesses as custom domains for short links, REST API access, bulk imports, and third-party integrations.

What open source changes—and what it does not
Flo’s case for the MIT license is user choice: if the project operator changes direction, users can fork the source and self-host it rather than having their only option be a provider-controlled redirect. That is an exit path, not a promise of effortless continuity. Self-hosting still takes technical work, and a service that handles redirects, analytics, and support has ongoing costs.
Flo acknowledges those costs and frames the business model as charging for business-oriented capabilities rather than making individuals pay to keep a redirect alive: “Companies pay for company features. Individuals don’t pay ransom for a redirect.” That is the founder’s principle for QRcodly, rather than an independently verified statement about its present plans.

How the project is built
Flo says the project uses TypeScript across its planned surfaces: a web app, browser extension, and future desktop app. The architecture described in the article includes a pnpm monorepo, a separate Fastify REST API, and shared Zod schemas for QR content types. Flo says those schemas validate forms in the frontend and requests in the backend.

The article gives conflicting counts for supported languages—eight in its feature summary and nine in its stack discussion—so it does not establish a reliable current count. Flo also says the project had its first paying customers “a year in,” but the article does not provide enough context in that sentence to establish a launch date.
What the birthday story means for someone printing a code
The choice between a static and dynamic QR code is a trade-off between direct control and post-print flexibility. A static code avoids depending on a redirect service but is harder to update after printing. A dynamic code can point somewhere new without reprinting, but the printed short link depends on the redirect operator remaining available under acceptable terms.
Flo’s story is less a neutral comparison of every QR tool than an explanation of why one developer wanted a different arrangement: individual use without a paid gate for basic access, and an open-source route for users who want more control. As Flo writes of the original errand, “I got the birthday present done in the end.”
