Short answer: You do not need a dedicated server to play Necesse multiplayer. Steam can host a world in-game, but the owner must stay online and remain in that world. A dedicated server is the better choice when friends need to play while the owner is away. This guide covers the free in-game option, self-hosted Windows and Linux servers, managed hosting, port forwarding, joining instructions, and common failures.
Do you actually need a dedicated server?
The Necesse Wiki’s Multiplayer article states: “It is not necessary to have a dedicated server in order to play multiplayer with others.” For a small group that plays together at the same time, in-game hosting is usually the simplest route. The host starts Necesse through Steam, opens the multiplayer world, and keeps the game running while friends play.
The important limitation is persistence. An in-game hosted world depends on the host: the owner must be online and in that world for other players to join. A dedicated server runs separately from the game client, so the world can remain available when its owner is not playing.
| Hosting method | Does the owner need to be online? | Who maintains it? | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| In-game Steam hosting | Yes. The owner must stay online and in the world. | The player hosting the game. | A group that normally plays together. |
| Self-hosted dedicated server | No, provided the server computer and program remain running. | You or another member of the group. | A persistent shared world and full control over files. |
| Rented dedicated server | No. The hosting company keeps the service running. | The provider handles the machine; you manage the game settings. | Players who want an always-online world without operating a home server. |
Choose a hosting route
Use in-game hosting for the least setup
In-game hosting avoids server-file installation, router configuration, and separate server administration. It is the right choice when one person will be present whenever the group plays. It is not a persistent service: closing the host’s game or leaving the world ends access for everyone else.

Self-host a dedicated server for control and persistence
A self-hosted server can run on a Windows or Linux machine that stays powered on. You control the world files, configuration, passwords, updates, and backups. The trade-off is that you must install the server, forward the port on your router, allow traffic through the operating system firewall, and keep the server process running.
Rent a managed server when you do not want to run the machine
Managed Necesse hosting is an alternative for groups that want an always-online world without maintaining a computer at home. The Necesse Wiki lists several providers, but it does not provide current pricing, regional availability, performance comparisons, or feature testing. Treat a provider’s current plan, location, backup policy, and cancellation terms as separate decisions rather than assuming one service is universally best.
What you need before installing a dedicated server
- A computer or rented instance that can remain online while players need access. The supplied official material does not establish a required CPU, memory, storage, router model, or operating-system specification beyond the listed Windows 64-bit, macOS, and Linux 64-bit server downloads.
- Necesse server files obtained through Steam’s Tools library, SteamCMD, or the official server-download page.
- A host port. The documented default is UDP port
14159; you can choose another port when the server setup prompts for one. - Router access if friends will connect from outside your local network. You must forward the selected UDP port to the computer running the server.
- Operating-system firewall access so the server can receive inbound UDP traffic.
- The host’s reachable public IPv4 address for friends joining from elsewhere. A private address such as one in
192.168.0.0through192.168.255.255is for the local network and will not work for players outside it.
Get the official Necesse server files
The official Necesse server page describes Steam as the easiest installation route and also provides direct downloads. When checked on October 13, 2026, it displayed version 1.3.3, build 24926468 for these platforms:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
| Platform | Server download listed on October 13, 2026 |
|---|---|
| Windows | 64-bit server, version 1.3.3, build 24926468 |
| macOS | Server download, version 1.3.3, build 24926468 |
| Linux | 64-bit server, version 1.3.3, build 24926468 |
Server builds change. Check the official Necesse server page immediately before installing or updating instead of treating the version above as permanent.
Install through Steam’s Tools library
- Open Steam and go to your Library.
- Use the library filter to display Tools.
- Install Necesse Dedicated Server.
- Open the installed server folder and continue with the Windows or Linux launch instructions below, depending on the operating system.
Install with SteamCMD
The Necesse Wiki documents SteamCMD as another acquisition method. After installing SteamCMD, use an anonymous login and the Necesse application ID:
steamcmd +login anonymous +app_update 1169370 validate +quit
The application ID is 1169370. The validate option checks the downloaded files. SteamCMD’s installation location determines where the server files are written, so note that path before launching the server.

Set up a Necesse dedicated server on Windows
The following flow follows the Windows guide in the Necesse Wiki. The server program asks configuration questions as it starts, so keep the values you want to use available before launching it.
- Install the server through Steam’s Tools library, SteamCMD, or the official Windows 64-bit download.
- Open the server installation folder and run
StartServer.bat. - Enter a world name when prompted. Use a name that makes the save easy to identify.
- Answer the prompt for custom options. Choose the server settings and world-generation options appropriate for your group.
- Enter the host port. Use the documented default,
14159, unless another application already needs it or you have a specific reason to change it. - Set the player-slot count. The Wiki guide documents a range from 1 to 250. That is the range stated by the guide, not an independently tested or guaranteed current capacity for every machine or build.
- Set a password if you want to restrict access. Give it only to the players who should join.
- Complete the world-generation prompts and wait for the server console to finish loading.
- On your router, create a port-forwarding rule for the selected UDP port. Point it to the local IP address of the Windows computer running the server.
- In Windows Firewall, allow the server program or create an inbound rule for the same UDP port. If Windows displays a network-access prompt when the program starts, allow the network types that match your intended use.
- Leave the command window and server process running while players use the world. Closing it stops the server.
Do not shut down the console by killing the process if you can avoid it. Use the server console’s shutdown command or normal shutdown control so the world can save cleanly.
Set up a Necesse dedicated server on Linux
The separate Necesse Linux guide is written specifically for Debian-based distributions. Its package-installation commands should not be copied blindly to Fedora, Arch, Alpine, or another distribution; use the package and service conventions for that operating system instead.
- Install SteamCMD using the method appropriate for your Debian-based distribution.
- Open SteamCMD and log in anonymously.
- Install or update the Necesse server with application ID
1169370and file validation enabled. - Change to the directory containing the server files.
- Launch the graphical-interface-free server script:
./StartServer-nogui.sh
- Use the prompts to choose the world name, custom settings, port, player slots, password, and world-generation options. The documented default port is UDP
14159. - Forward that UDP port on the router to the Linux machine’s local address and permit it through the Linux firewall used by your distribution.
- Keep the process running while players are connected. Stop it through the server’s console before maintenance or configuration edits.
Start the server automatically with systemd
The Linux guide also documents an optional systemd service so the server can start with the machine. This is useful for a computer intended to run as a server, but the service must use the actual user account, installation directory, and script path on your system. Test the script manually first; an incorrect working directory or permissions in a service definition can make an otherwise functional server appear broken.
Configure port forwarding and network access
Use the same port everywhere
The port entered during server setup must match all three places: the server configuration, the router’s forwarding rule, and the port your friends enter in Necesse. The default documented value is UDP 14159. If you choose a different port, replace it consistently in each location.
Forward UDP to the server computer
Find the router’s port-forwarding section, create a rule for the selected UDP port, and direct it to the local address of the Windows or Linux machine running Necesse. A forwarding rule aimed at a different computer will not reach the server, even if the server program itself is running correctly.

Give friends a public address, not a local address
Players on the same home network may be able to use the server computer’s local address. Friends connecting over the internet need the host’s public IPv4 address. An address in the private 192.168.0.0–192.168.255.255 range is not reachable from outside that local network.
Interpret port-check results carefully
The Wiki warns that online port-checking sites can report a false negative. A negative result does not by itself prove that the Necesse server is unreachable. Check that the server is running and listening, the router rule targets the correct computer, the selected protocol is UDP, and the operating-system firewall permits the traffic. Then have a friend try the actual Necesse connection flow.
How friends join your dedicated server
Give players the host’s public IPv4 address, the server port, and the password if one was configured. The documented in-game flow is:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start Necesse through Steam.
- Open Multiplayer.
- Select Add Server.
- Enter a memorable name for the server entry.
- Enter the host’s public IPv4 address.
- Enter the server port. Use
14159if the server is using the documented default. - Save or add the entry.
- Select the new entry and choose Join Server.
- Enter the server password if the host enabled one.
Players on the same LAN may use a reachable local address, but outside friends should use the public address. If the host changes the port, every player must use the new value.
Where Necesse stores configuration, worlds, and logs
| Operating system | Documented location and contents |
|---|---|
| Windows | The Necesse folder under %appdata% contains server.cfg, world settings, saves, and logs. The Wiki says the world save is a ZIP file by default. |
| Linux | The corresponding configuration, world-save, and log data is under ~/.config/Necesse. |
Stop the server before editing configuration or copying a live world save. Editing while the process is running can be overwritten when the server exits and can leave the world in an inconsistent state. Make a backup copy of the save before changing world settings.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The server window closes immediately
- Launch the supplied startup script from its installation folder so relative paths resolve correctly.
- Run the server from a terminal or command window so you can read the error instead of watching a window disappear.
- Confirm that the server files finished downloading and validation completed.
- On Linux, verify that
StartServer-nogui.shis being run from the directory containing the server files and that it is executable.
Friends time out or cannot connect
- Confirm that the server process is still running and has finished loading the world.
- Check that friends are using the public IPv4 address, not a private
192.168.x.xaddress. - Verify the port in the join entry matches the port configured on the server.
- Verify that the router forwards UDP, not only TCP, to the correct local computer.
- Check the operating-system firewall rule.
- Use the server’s own console and logs to confirm that it is listening, rather than relying solely on an online port-checking site.
Local players can join but internet players cannot
This pattern usually points to the router-forwarding or firewall part of the setup rather than the world itself. Recheck the forwarding destination, confirm the server computer’s local address has not changed, and ensure the external player is using the public address.

The wrong world opens
Stop the server and inspect the world name and save files under the documented Necesse data directory. On Windows, the default save is a ZIP file under the Necesse folder in %appdata%; Linux stores the corresponding data under ~/.config/Necesse. Do not edit or replace a save while the server is running.
Recommended Free Tools
Players cannot connect after changing the port
Changing the server’s port requires a matching update to the router rule, firewall rule, and every player’s saved server entry. A single old value is enough to send connections to the wrong destination.
The server is full
Increase the configured player-slot value only within the range supported by the current guide and build. The Windows Wiki guide documents 1–250 slots, but that range is not a performance guarantee; the practical experience depends on the machine, world, network, and number of active players.

Update the server files
Before an update, announce maintenance to players and stop the server cleanly. If you installed through SteamCMD, run the same anonymous-login update using application ID 1169370 and validation. If you used Steam’s Tools library or a direct download, check the official server page for the current build and use its current files. The page showed version 1.3.3, build 24926468 on October 13, 2026, but that value can change.
Back up the world
- Stop the server through its console.
- Copy the world save from the Necesse data directory to a separate backup location.
- Keep more than one dated backup if the world is important to your group.
- Restart the server and confirm that the expected world loads before inviting everyone back.
Shut down for maintenance
Use the server console’s shutdown control, wait for the process to exit, and then perform file edits, backups, operating-system updates, or router changes. Starting the server again after maintenance provides a clean test before players reconnect.
Which option should your group use?
| Your situation | Recommended route | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Everyone plays at the same time and one person is always present. | In-game Steam hosting | No dedicated-server installation or separate machine is needed. |
| You want the same world available when the owner is offline. | Self-hosted or rented dedicated server | The server can remain running independently of the owner’s game client. |
| You are comfortable with router and firewall configuration. | Self-hosted dedicated server | You retain control over files, settings, backups, and updates. |
| You want persistence but do not want to operate a machine. | Managed hosting | The provider keeps the service online, while you manage the Necesse world. |
| You have no access to router settings. | In-game hosting or a managed service | Home port forwarding may not be possible without router control. |
Frequently asked questions
Can I play without installing a dedicated server?
Yes. Necesse supports multiplayer through an in-game Steam-hosted world. The owner must remain online and in that world for friends to continue playing.
