A vintage NEC ProSpeed 286 laptop has been turned into a usable retrocomputing machine by keeping its case and original keyboard while replacing its computing core and passive-matrix screen. The result is a restomod, not a restoration to original working hardware: a Raspberry Pi runs DOS emulation inside the laptop, and a same-dimension modern screen takes the place of the original LCD.
What the NEC ProSpeed 286 project changes—and keeps
After attempts to repair his old NEC ProSpeed 286 failed, Cory Whitesell repurposed it as a retro battlestation. The conversion preserves the machine’s exterior and selected original interfaces while substituting modern electronics for key components. Hackaday’s October 9, 2026 project feature describes the build.
- Kept: the original case, power supply and keyboard.
- Replaced: the original computing core with a Raspberry Pi and the passive-matrix LCD with a modern screen of the same dimensions.
- Adapted: the keyboard connects to the Pi through a PS/2-to-USB adapter.
The feature reports that the Pi provides a DOS experience through emulation, giving the laptop modern utility without requiring the original 286 electronics to run. It does not identify the Pi model, operating system, emulation software, or a tested software list, and it reports no performance benchmarks.
How the Pi and original keyboard are integrated
Power from the hard-drive connector
The Pi receives power from the original hard drive’s Molex connector, while the laptop’s original power supply remains intact. The feature does not describe voltage conversion, current limits or protective circuitry, so it is not enough information to reproduce or assess the power arrangement. Anyone planning a similar conversion would need to establish those electrical details for their own hardware rather than assume the connector can safely power a particular board.

Keyboard through a PS/2-to-USB adapter
The original keyboard stays in place and is connected to the modern computer with a PS/2-to-USB adapter. The report does not name the adapter or document compatibility testing, so it does not establish that every ProSpeed keyboard or adapter combination will work.
Why the display is a replacement, not a repair
The original passive-matrix LCD was replaced with a modern screen matching its dimensions. That preserves the laptop’s overall form while changing a defining piece of its original display hardware. The feature does not specify the replacement panel’s model, resolution, interface or mounting method; those details should not be inferred from the matching dimensions alone.

Where the build fits in Hackaday’s 2026 challenge
The conversion aligns most closely with the challenge’s Modern Retro category, which covers emulations, work-alikes and modern electronics inside retro interfaces. Its preservation of the original case and keyboard also gives it a restomod character. Hackaday announced the 2026 Retrocomputing Challenge on August 18, 2026, inviting participants to document projects on Hackaday.io. The announcement says three favorite projects would receive a $150 DigiKey gift certificate. The announcement lists Tuesday, October 27, 2026, as the deadline; the contest page gives the event window as August 18 through October 27, 2026.
Contest entries must concern retrocomputing, be documented and grant permission for the design to be published on Hackaday. The contest page says rules and categories may change and judges’ decisions are final. Because the deadline and rules are time-sensitive, check the current contest information before relying on them.

What the report leaves unanswered
The feature does not provide the laptop’s year, detailed original hardware specifications, a full repair history, the exact replacement parts, the Pi’s software configuration or measured results. Hackaday’s writer suggests that a more powerful single-board computer or a compact phone might fit in the drive bay in a future revision, but that is a speculative possibility—not a tested upgrade.
