A global reassessment published in Nature on October 15, 2026, finds that 44% of assessed warm-water, reef-building coral species are threatened with extinction. The result is a relative-risk measure under IUCN Red List rules—not a forecast of when any species will disappear—and it predates the latest global bleaching event.
What the 2026 coral assessment found
The assessment, led by the IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group, reassessed 892 reef-building coral species worldwide. Scientists had enough evidence to assign an IUCN category to 774 of them; 340 were classified as Vulnerable, Endangered or Critically Endangered. That is the basis for the headline figure: 44% of data-sufficient species are threatened with extinction.
The threatened total comprises 56 Vulnerable species, 251 Endangered species and 33 Critically Endangered species, according to the IUCN’s 2024 assessment explanation. The remaining reassessed species were placed in lower-risk categories, while 118 species remained Data Deficient and could not be assigned a definitive risk category.
This is an update to the first global coral Red List assessment, published in 2008, when about one-third of reef-building coral species were considered threatened. The updated estimate indicates a substantial deterioration in assessed status, although changes in methods, available data and species coverage also affect comparisons between assessments.

What “44% at risk” does—and does not—mean
An IUCN Red List category measures a species’ relative risk against standardized criteria. It does not predict an extinction date, state that 44% of species will certainly vanish, or mean that 44% of every coral population is already gone.
For many corals, direct, long-term population counts do not exist. The reassessment therefore combined observed coral-cover trends with projected severe bleaching under the SSP2-4.5 climate scenario, generation length and traits associated with vulnerability. Those inputs were used to infer population reductions where species-level time series were unavailable.
The result should be treated as a dated baseline. The analysis predates the fourth global coral bleaching event, which occurred from 2023 through 2025, and the three hottest years on record cited by the authors. Conditions in some locations may therefore be worse than this assessment snapshot suggests. Future surveys and a new Red List reassessment could raise or lower the percentage.

Regional and taxonomic differences
Risk is not distributed evenly among reefs or coral families. The updated assessment found a higher share of threatened species in the Atlantic than in the Indo-Pacific, while one Indo-Pacific family stands out for especially severe risk.
| Comparison | Finding | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Indo-Pacific vs. Atlantic | 43% vs. 50% threatened | Shares of assessed species in each region |
| Indo-Pacific Acroporidae | 191 of 279 species (68%) classified as Endangered | Family-level result for assessed Indo-Pacific species |
| Global reassessment | 340 of 774 data-sufficient species threatened | Across 892 reassessed reef-building species |
The Atlantic result is consistent with the IUCN’s earlier regional assessment, which found elevated risk across all 85 valid Atlantic shallow-water, reef-building coral species. That work identified climate change, disease, pollution and other human-caused pressures as major threats.
Why reef-building corals are declining
Climate-driven heat stress
Climate change determines the final status of more than 90% of species in the highest-risk categories. Warmer ocean water disrupts the relationship between corals and their symbiotic algae, causing bleaching. Prolonged or repeated heat stress can kill coral tissue, reduce reproduction and leave surviving colonies more vulnerable to disease.

Local pressures compound global warming
Pollution, sediment, destructive or excessive fishing, disease and physical damage can weaken reefs before or after a bleaching event. These pressures vary by coastline, so two reefs exposed to the same ocean temperature can experience different levels of mortality and recovery.

How the trend has changed over time
The IUCN Red List Index for reef-building corals fell from 0.96 before 1998 to 0.89 in 2008 and 0.74 in 2024. A lower index indicates worsening overall conservation status among the species tracked by the index.

The index decline and the increase from roughly one-third threatened in 2008 to 44% in the 2026 reassessment point in the same direction: risk has accelerated rather than stabilized. Because the two global assessments differ in data and analytical context, the percentages should be compared as evidence of a broad trend, not as a perfectly controlled experiment.
Which corals are included—and which are not
The 44% figure applies to warm-water, reef-building corals: shallow, sunlit species that build tropical and subtropical reefs. It must not be generalized to every coral species.
Cold-water corals are a separate and much larger group. The IUCN’s 2024 explanation notes that more than 4,000 cold-water coral species exist, but only 22 had been assessed at that time. Their limited coverage means there is no comparable global percentage for all cold-water corals.

What scientists and managers can do
Cut greenhouse-gas emissions
The assessment identifies rapid greenhouse-gas reductions as the main way to lower the heat stress driving the highest-risk categories. Reef restoration cannot compensate for continued warming if bleaching becomes more frequent or severe.
Protect reefs from additional damage
Marine protection, effective fishing controls, pollution reduction, disease surveillance and careful coastal development can preserve healthier colonies and give damaged reefs a better chance to recover between heat events. Measures need to be designed for local conditions rather than treated as a single universal intervention.
Find and manage resilient populations
Managers can prioritize reefs that show better survival or recovery during heat events, while maintaining genetic and geographic diversity. Protecting those areas may help preserve sources of larvae for nearby reefs, but resilience in one location does not guarantee adaptation everywhere.

The 118 Data Deficient species show why more field surveys, consistent coral-cover measurements and taxonomic work are needed. Better information on regional responses, species traits and population trends will make future risk categories more precise and help managers target limited conservation resources.
Study adaptation without assuming it is guaranteed
Research into whether corals can acclimatize or genetically adapt to warmer water can inform conservation, assisted propagation and restoration. Such approaches remain complements to emissions cuts and local protection, not substitutes for them.
How to interpret the headline responsibly
- Use “44% of assessed warm-water reef-building coral species” rather than “44% of all corals.”
- Remember that the denominator is 774 data-sufficient species, not all 892 reassessed species.
- Read “threatened with extinction” as an elevated relative risk under IUCN criteria, not a timetable for disappearance.
- Keep the date in view: the estimate was published on October 15, 2026, and the underlying analysis predates the 2023–2025 global bleaching event.
- Expect the percentage to change as Data Deficient species are studied and new bleaching and population data are incorporated.
As IUCN SSC Coral Specialist Group co-chair David Obura put it, the assessment is “a stark warning of the accelerating increase in global threats to coral reefs.” Its practical message is that emissions reductions, local threat management, resilient-reef protection and better monitoring must proceed together.
