On current Samsung Galaxy devices, Nearby Share instructions generally refer to Quick Share, the name used in Samsung’s current support guide. To send a nearby file, open it, tap Share, choose Quick Share (or the label shown on your software version), select the recipient, and have them accept the transfer. Names and available options vary by device, carrier, software version, and region.
How to send a file with Nearby Share or Quick Share
- Prepare both devices. Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and enable Quick Share on the Galaxy phone. Samsung’s older Nearby Share instructions also call for Location; follow the settings shown on your device. Keep the devices close together.
- Choose what to share. Open the photo, video, document, or other file, tap Share, then select Quick Share or Nearby Share, depending on the software label. If you start inside Quick Share, choose Send and select the file.
- Select the recipient. Wait for the nearby device to appear and tap its name. The receiver may need to have Quick Share enabled, an appropriate visibility setting selected, and its screen on. Older instructions also say both devices should be unlocked.
- Accept and confirm. The receiver taps the incoming-share notification and accepts. Check for a Sent or equivalent completion status on the sender’s screen.
Samsung’s older Nearby Share help and current Quick Share help describe similar nearby-transfer flows, but exact controls can differ. See Samsung’s Nearby Share instructions and its current Quick Share guide for the steps and labels applicable to your software.
How to receive a file and control who can find your phone
To receive a nearby transfer, turn on Quick Share and set visibility so the sender is allowed to see your device. Samsung’s current US guide lists No one, Your devices, Contacts, and Everyone (Only for 10 minutes). Older Samsung instructions show a different set of labels, so your menu may not match the current list exactly.
- Your devices limits discovery to your own devices.
- Contacts lets eligible contacts find the device.
- Everyone for 10 minutes can be used for someone outside your contacts; switch back to a narrower setting when finished.
- No one prevents other devices from finding you for nearby sharing.
Samsung US Support recommends using the “Your devices” or “Contacts” options. If you choose a broader visibility setting to receive from someone else, keep in mind that nearby devices may be able to see yours during that period.

Which devices are compatible?
Samsung’s regional support information gives a Galaxy-to-Galaxy baseline of phones and tablets running Android 10.0 (Q) with One UI 2.1 or later, plus Galaxy Books released in 2020 or later. The listed prerequisites include a Samsung Account, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth. This is not a guarantee for every model or sharing route: Samsung says availability and features can vary by device, carrier, software version, and market. Check support for your exact model if Quick Share is missing or the recipient cannot be found.
Quick Share can handle selected photos, videos, documents, and other files. Depending on the device and software, Samsung also describes sharing through QR codes or links, contacts, and supported Apple-device destinations. Those routes are not necessarily available on every Galaxy device. Samsung’s Quick Share overview describes the feature, while Samsung Latin America’s compatibility guidance gives the regional Galaxy baseline.

Share from a Galaxy phone to an Apple device
Samsung’s current US instructions describe an Apple-device route, but it is conditional on device and software availability. For that route, Samsung specifies Quick Share app version 13.8.51.27 or later and Google Play services version 26.11.xx or later.

What to check when a recipient does not appear
- Wireless settings: Confirm Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are on for both devices, and Quick Share is enabled where required.
- Receiver readiness: Make sure the receiving device’s screen is on and its visibility setting allows the sender to find it.
- Distance: Move the devices closer together and wait for discovery to refresh.
- Software: Check for software updates on both devices; Samsung recommends updates when Quick Share is not working.
- Other wireless modes: Samsung’s US guidance says Quick Share cannot be used while the phone is using a mobile hotspot, Wi-Fi Direct, or Smart View. Turn off the active mode and try again.
- Restart: If discovery or connection still fails, restart both devices and retry.
Secure Folder and sensitive files
Secure Folder apps missing from the share panel
Samsung’s older Nearby Share instructions describe settings for showing Secure Folder apps in the share panel and allowing background activity while locked. The exact menu names can differ by software version, so check Secure Folder and sharing settings on the phone if its files or apps do not appear.
Check private information before sharing
Before sending a photo or document, consider whether it contains personal details or location information. Samsung says that on One UI 5, the device may detect images containing personal information, such as IDs or passports, and prompt you to consider Private Share. Samsung also says Auto Blocker with Maximum restrictions enabled automatically removes location data from Gallery images shared. These are specific behaviors described for those settings and software; do not assume every transfer receives the same protection.
