Short answer: there is no officially published “safest” NEAR wallet. The former NEAR web wallet now acts as a directory and migration gateway, listing several independent wallet choices. Pick one by the device you use, the exact NEAR dApp or action you need, its recovery method, and whether you want software-only or hardware-backed key storage.

What happened to the old NEAR Wallet?

wallet.near.org is no longer an active, standalone NEAR web-wallet product. NEAR describes it as a gateway to the wider wallet ecosystem and directs users to current wallet options. The page also provides migration guidance for people who used the legacy wallet.

If you used the old wallet, the current instruction is to import your account into a new wallet with its recovery phrase. NEAR says old email or text-message recovery links now default to app.mynearwallet.com. Treat any recovery message as sensitive: check the destination domain yourself before entering a phrase or approving an account import.

The directory is useful for discovering options, but its short descriptions are not an independent feature matrix, security audit, or reliability ranking. A wallet being listed there does not prove that it supports every NEAR token, dApp, staking flow, swap, bridge, or account-recovery method you may need.

NEAR wallets currently listed in the official directory

The following descriptions reflect how the directory presents each option. Availability, supported actions, and recovery workflows can change, so confirm details in the wallet’s own current documentation before depositing funds.

Wallet Directory description Best comparison question
NEAR Mobile Self-custodial iOS and Android wallet with staking and gasless cross-chain swaps powered by NEAR Intents. Is a phone-first wallet suitable, and does the current app support the exact staking or swap action you need?
Meteor Wallet NEAR wallet with swaps and cross-chain bridging; available as a web wallet, browser extension, and mobile app. Do you need one wallet across desktop and mobile, and are your target networks supported today?
HOT Wallet Mobile and browser-extension wallet that connects NEAR with other blockchains. Which platforms, networks, and NEAR dApps are supported by the current release?
Ethereum Wallet Use an EVM wallet with NEAR Protocol. Does the specific EVM wallet recognize the NEAR network and connect to your intended dApp?
Intear Wallet Web, mobile, and desktop wallet. Which clients are currently available, and what recovery method does each use?
Nightly Wallet Mobile and browser-extension wallet with support for multiple ecosystems. Does it support the particular NEAR functions and ecosystem connections you plan to use?
Sweat Wallet Non-custodial wallet built around movement-based earnings and rewards. Is its specialized rewards use case relevant, or do you need a general-purpose NEAR wallet?

“Mobile,” “extension,” “web,” and “desktop” labels describe access methods, not a guarantee of identical capabilities. An extension may expose different account-import, signing, or dApp-connection behavior from a mobile client made by the same provider.

How to choose a NEAR wallet

1. Start with the device you actually use

  • Phone only: begin with a listed mobile wallet, then check its current app-store listing, supported operating-system version, and recovery process.
  • Desktop browser: a web wallet or browser extension may be more convenient for dApps. Install extensions only from the wallet’s verified official distribution channel.
  • Several devices: choose a provider that explicitly offers the clients you need. Do not assume that an account created in one client automatically has the same backup or import path in another.
  • Desktop application: Intear is listed with a desktop option, but verify which desktop package is currently available and how it is updated.

2. Match the wallet to the action

Write down the action you will perform before choosing a wallet. “Holding NEAR” is a much smaller requirement than “using a particular dApp, staking, swapping across chains, bridging assets, or signing transactions from an EVM-compatible interface.” Then verify all of the following in the wallet and dApp documentation:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • the exact network and account format;
  • the token or contract you will use;
  • whether the dApp can connect to that wallet client;
  • whether staking, swaps, bridges, or other actions are supported in your region and current app version; and
  • which fees, approvals, and signing prompts you should expect.

A directory label such as “swaps” or “multi-ecosystem” is a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee.

3. Understand custody and recovery before funding

NEAR’s terms state that NEAR does not hold users’ assets or take custody of them. They also place responsibility for protecting digital keys and the seed phrase on the user. In practical terms, you must know:

  • where the wallet displays or creates the recovery phrase;
  • whether the account is self-custodial or uses another recovery model;
  • how to restore the account on a replacement device;
  • whether the wallet supports importing the account type you already have; and
  • what happens if you lose both the device and the recovery material.

Never send a seed phrase to support staff, paste it into a website, photograph it for cloud backup, or store it in an unencrypted note. Anyone with the phrase can generally control the account; a provider that cannot see the phrase cannot recover it for you.

4. Decide whether you need hardware-backed signing

NEAR says Ledger Wallet integrated NEAR Intents as a swap provider for hardware-wallet users. That makes hardware-backed custody a legitimate option for people who want private keys kept on a separate device, but the cited announcement does not establish which hardware models support every NEAR action. Confirm model-specific support for the exact transaction type before buying or moving funds.

  • This is what security feels like: Ledger touchscreen signers all come with a private, offline, PIN-protected backup, Ledger Recovery Key, to never lose access to your assets.

5. Check the dApp connection before transferring assets

Open the dApp’s documented wallet-connection list and compare it with the wallet’s current documentation. If the dApp does not name your wallet, test with a new, low-value account first. A wallet can hold a token yet still lack the connector or signing flow required by a particular application.

Moving an account from the legacy wallet

Use the official migration path rather than trying to “recover” an account through an unsolicited message. The process below follows NEAR’s stated guidance while adding safety checks that prevent common mistakes.

  1. Locate your recovery phrase. Find the phrase you created or received when the old account was set up. If you only have an email or text link, search for the message with the subject “Near Wallet Recovery,” as NEAR’s migration notice describes.
  2. Open the new wallet from a trusted source. Navigate to the wallet’s official site or verified app-store listing yourself. Do not use a link forwarded by a stranger or an advertisement that imitates a wallet.
  3. Select account import or restore. Choose the option that accepts an existing recovery phrase. Do not create a new account if your goal is to access the old account.
  4. Enter the phrase only in the genuine wallet application. Check spelling, word order, and the number of words. Never send the phrase through email, chat, a form, or a support ticket.
  5. Confirm the account identifier. After import, compare the displayed NEAR account name or address with a record you trust. If the identifier is different, stop and do not deposit or sign anything.
  6. Test with a read-only check or tiny transaction. Confirm that balances and history appear as expected. For a transfer, verify the recipient, network, amount, and any memo before signing.
  7. Secure the new setup. Store the recovery phrase offline in a location protected from theft, fire, moisture, and unauthorized access. Enable the wallet’s available device lock or biometric protection, but do not treat those features as a replacement for the phrase.

NEAR specifically says old email or text recovery links default to app.mynearwallet.com. A different domain, a request for your phrase from “support,” or a demand to pay a recovery fee is a reason to stop and verify through an independently opened official page.

Security and transaction risks every wallet user should understand

Self-custody means there is no password-reset department

NEAR’s terms warn: “PLEASE KEEP YOUR SEED PHRASE AND DIGITAL KEYS SAFE, AS WE AND OUR SERVICE PROVIDERS DO NOT HAVE THEM AND DO NOT KNOW THEM. IF YOU LOSE THE KEYS OR SEED PHRASE, YOU MAY LOSE ACCESS TO YOUR ASSETS.” This is an official-document warning, not a promise that any particular listed wallet has superior security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Confirmed transactions cannot simply be recalled

The terms state that once a transaction is recorded in a digital wallet as instructed when initiated, it cannot be recalled or retrieved. Before every signature, check the destination account, network, amount, token, contract interaction, and any requested approval. If a dApp asks for an action you do not understand, reject it and investigate before trying again.

Directory inclusion is not a security score

No named statistic in the official directory or the cited NEAR pages compares these wallets’ security, uptime, recovery success, or user outcomes. It is not supportable to call one option “the safest” based only on its appearance in the directory. Compare custody design, update practices, hardware support, dApp compatibility, and your own backup discipline instead.

Separate wallet security from protocol statistics

NEAR publishes broader protocol figures, but network-wide activity or performance does not measure the security of an individual wallet application. A busy or well-known ecosystem cannot substitute for checking the wallet’s software source, permissions, recovery flow, and transaction prompts.

Choosing among common use cases

For a simple mobile holder

Start with NEAR Mobile, HOT Wallet, Nightly Wallet, or another directory-listed mobile option. Compare how each creates and restores a self-custodial account, then make a small test deposit before committing a larger balance. Do not choose solely because a wallet supports a particular reward or swap feature if you only need basic holding and transfers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For frequent swaps or cross-chain activity

NEAR Mobile and Meteor Wallet are the directory entries that explicitly mention swaps or cross-chain functionality; NEAR Mobile’s description specifically mentions gasless cross-chain swaps powered by NEAR Intents, while Meteor’s mentions swaps and bridging. Verify current fees, supported assets, slippage controls, bridge destinations, and signing prompts in the live product. “Gasless” describes the advertised swap flow, not a guarantee that every transaction or network fee is zero.

For browser-based dApps

Meteor, HOT, Nightly, and other options with browser-extension or web access may be convenient. Confirm that the extension is the official one, inspect the permissions requested by the browser, and connect only to the intended dApp domain. Keep a separate low-value account for experimenting with unfamiliar applications.

For multi-ecosystem use

HOT, Nightly, Meteor, and the EVM-wallet route are relevant starting points because their directory descriptions mention other blockchains or ecosystems. “Multi-ecosystem” does not mean every chain uses the same address format, token standard, or signing behavior. Confirm the exact chain and account type before transferring funds.

For movement-linked rewards

Sweat Wallet is described as a non-custodial wallet with movement-based earnings and rewards. That specialized purpose may be useful if those rewards are your main goal; it is not evidence that it is the best general-purpose wallet for staking, trading, or arbitrary NEAR dApps.

For hardware-backed custody

Consider a hardware wallet when protecting a larger balance or reducing exposure to malware is more important than maximum convenience. Check that the specific hardware model, wallet software, account type, and intended NEAR action work together. The NEAR material confirms the Ledger Wallet and NEAR Intents integration, but not model-by-model support for all NEAR transactions.

A practical decision checklist

Before installing or funding a wallet, answer these questions:

  • Which device will I use most often?
  • Which exact NEAR dApp, token, staking action, swap, or bridge do I need?
  • Does the current wallet documentation name that action and network?
  • Where are the private keys held, and what recovery material will I receive?
  • Can I restore the account without relying on the original device?
  • Does the wallet support my preferred hardware device, if applicable?
  • Can I verify the recipient and transaction details clearly before signing?
  • Have I tested the restore process or a small transaction before moving a significant balance?

If you cannot answer the recovery question, do not fund the wallet yet. Convenience features are secondary to knowing how access is restored and who controls the keys.

Common problems and what to do

The imported wallet shows a different account

Stop transferring funds. Recheck the recovery phrase word by word, confirm that you selected account import rather than new-account creation, and verify that the wallet supports the same account type. Never “fix” the problem by entering the phrase into a second website suggested in a message.

The dApp cannot see the wallet

Confirm that you installed the correct extension or opened the supported web client, then check the dApp’s current wallet list and network selector. If support is uncertain, use a low-value test account and contact the wallet or dApp through its independently opened official support channel.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A recovery email points somewhere unexpected

Do not enter credentials. NEAR’s migration notice says legacy email or text recovery links default to app.mynearwallet.com; compare the domain exactly and navigate there manually rather than following a suspicious redirect.

A transaction prompt is unclear

Reject it. Review the dApp, contract, recipient, amount, network, and requested permissions. A confirmed transaction cannot simply be recalled, so asking questions before signing is safer than trying to undo an approval afterward.

Bottom line: which NEAR wallet should you use?

Choose the listed wallet that fits your device and the specific action you need, not the one with the broadest marketing description. NEAR Mobile is the clearest mobile-first option in the directory; Meteor is the most explicitly multi-platform option with swaps and bridging; HOT and Nightly are relevant for mobile, extension, and multi-ecosystem use; Intear emphasizes web, mobile, and desktop access; Ethereum Wallet represents an EVM-wallet route; and Sweat Wallet targets movement-based rewards. Those labels are useful shortlists, not independent endorsements.

Whichever option you select, import a legacy account only through a verified wallet, protect the recovery phrase offline, test with a small amount, and verify every transaction before signing. Your recovery material and signing decisions—not the directory listing—ultimately determine whether you retain access to your NEAR assets.
