NEAR and Solana are optimized around different performance designs, so neither can be named the universal winner. NEAR’s current network page advertises 600 ms block production, 1.2 second finality and scalability up to 1 million transactions per second through Nightshade sharding. Solana’s official material in this comparison explains its fee market, sponsored transactions and production infrastructure, but it does not provide a directly equivalent, current benchmark under the same workload.
For a real project, compare the workload you will run: observed confirmation latency, total fees including priority pricing, contract languages and onboarding, required integrations, and the RPC capacity and geography you need. The sections below separate documented mechanisms from promotional network figures so you can make that decision without treating unlike measurements as a head-to-head race.
What is the difference between NEAR and Solana?
NEAR Protocol and Solana are layer-1 blockchains that let developers deploy applications and users submit transactions without relying on a conventional centralized database. Their main architectural emphasis differs:
Recommended Free Tools
- NEAR: Nightshade sharding divides work across shards so the network can expand capacity as more shards are added. NEAR promotes fast blocks, rapid finality, passkey-oriented account onboarding and applications that can sponsor users’ gas.
- Solana: Its documented operating model centers on a single fee market with a base charge and an optional priority charge tied to compute demand. Solana’s production guidance places heavy emphasis on selecting capable private RPC infrastructure, subscriptions, historical data and geographic coverage.
Those distinctions affect application design. A high-volume consumer service may care most about predictable confirmation and a simple first transaction. A trading or arbitrage system may care more about fee bidding, compute limits and low-latency RPC access. A cross-chain application may choose according to the integrations it actually needs rather than a headline TPS number.
No source in the current material establishes a controlled NEAR-versus-Solana test using identical transaction types, hardware, network conditions and measurement windows. Statements that one chain is categorically faster or cheaper therefore go beyond the available evidence.

Which is faster, NEAR or Solana?
NEAR’s published speed and scaling figures
NEAR’s official blockchain page reports a 600 millisecond block time and 1.2 second finality. It also advertises scalability of up to 1 million transactions per second. These are NEAR-published network figures, not the result of a matched comparison with Solana. “Block time” describes how quickly blocks are produced; “finality” describes when the network treats a transaction as irreversible under its consensus rules. They are related but not interchangeable measures.
A NEAR retrospective published in 2026 describes the mainnet expanding from six to nine shards and cites a one-million-TPS benchmark milestone. A benchmark milestone and a headline scalability target do not by themselves show sustained application throughput under production load. Actual results depend on transaction complexity, state access, contention, client implementation and the way a measurement counts successful work.

The Solana documentation supplied for this comparison focuses on transaction fees, fee sponsorship and RPC operations rather than publishing a directly comparable current throughput-and-finality result. It would be inaccurate to place an unstated Solana number beside NEAR’s 600 ms, 1.2 second and 1 million-TPS figures and call that an independent winner.
Solana applications can still feel fast or slow to users depending on where their RPC endpoint is located, whether the client uses WebSocket subscriptions, how much history it requests and whether congestion requires a higher priority fee. Confirmation observed through a poorly chosen public endpoint is not the same thing as the chain’s underlying consensus performance.
How to compare speed for your application
Use measurements from the transaction mix you will actually send. Record the time from submission to the user-visible confirmation and separately record the time to the finality level your application requires. Include normal traffic and peak traffic, because a test that runs only when the network is quiet can hide the conditions that matter most.

- Define the transaction types, instruction count, data size and expected account or state contention.
- Choose equivalent client libraries and comparable geographic locations for both networks.
- Run repeated trials during representative busy and quiet periods rather than relying on one burst.
- Measure submission-to-confirmation, submission-to-finality, failed transactions and retries separately.
- For Solana, record the priority fee, compute-unit limit and RPC response time for every trial.
- For NEAR, record the shard, gas used and any account or storage costs associated with the operation.
- Report medians and tail latency, such as the 95th percentile, instead of only the fastest observation.
This procedure produces a project-specific answer to “Which is faster?” even though the public figures do not provide a universal cross-chain ranking.

How Solana transaction fees work
Solana’s official fee documentation states: “Every Solana transaction requires a fee paid in SOL.” The charge has two parts:
- Base fee: The documentation lists 5,000 lamports per signature.
- Prioritization fee: An optional amount determined by the compute-unit price and compute-unit limit selected for the transaction.
The base component is assessed according to the number of signatures, while the priority component lets an application bid for scheduling when demand is high. Solana’s documentation also says fees are charged even when a transaction fails. A retry strategy must therefore account for the cost of unsuccessful attempts, not just successful transfers.
The amount you pay in a live application can vary with the number of signers, requested compute budget and congestion. A wallet that displays only a base estimate may understate the amount needed for time-sensitive instructions when a priority fee is appropriate.
NEAR’s published cost figures
NEAR’s Developer Hub says typical transaction costs are below $0.01 and shows average fees near $0.0002. The retrieved page does not define a measurement window, transaction mix or equivalent workload for those figures. They should therefore be treated as NEAR’s stated typical and average values, not as a directly comparable price for the same operation on Solana.

NEAR applications can also incur gas and storage-related costs that depend on the contract call and the state being created or modified. When estimating a product budget, model the complete operation rather than assuming that a simple transfer estimate applies to every contract interaction.
Fee sponsorship and onboarding
Solana supports a designated fee payer. An application can have a sponsor account pay the transaction fee while the user signs the portion authorizing the user’s action; both the sender and sponsor must sign. Production sponsorship requires controls for the sponsor wallet, funding or conversions where relevant, rate limits and abuse prevention.
NEAR’s developer material describes gas sponsorship as an application option. That can let a service hide the first gas payment from a new user, alongside passkey-style onboarding. Sponsorship changes who pays, not whether the underlying network operation consumes resources, so the application still needs budgets and monitoring.
Why a simple fee ranking is misleading
Solana’s 5,000-lamport base figure and NEAR’s approximately $0.0002 average are expressed in different units and come from different measurement descriptions. The Solana figure is a documented base rate per signature; the NEAR figures are typical and average costs with no stated comparable window in the available page excerpt. Exchange rates, priority pricing, signatures, compute, storage and failed attempts can all change the amount a user or sponsor ultimately pays.

How NEAR and Solana differ for developers
NEAR development and user experience
NEAR’s official developer material presents Rust and JavaScript as contract-development options. It also promotes passkey-oriented onboarding and gas sponsorship, which can reduce the number of blockchain concepts a first-time user must understand before completing an action.
Nightshade sharding is central to NEAR’s architecture story. As the network adds shards, work is distributed across more execution environments. The 2026 retrospective’s description of growth from six to nine mainnet shards illustrates that scaling approach, but it does not establish how every application benefits equally. A contract that frequently requires shared state or cross-shard coordination may have different latency and fee characteristics from an isolated workload.
Solana development and operations
The supplied Solana documentation is strongest on the operational side of production applications. It recommends private RPC access for production and says to evaluate:
- Peak request rate, not just average traffic.
- The API methods the application calls most often.
- WebSocket subscriptions if the product needs push updates.
- How much historical data the application must query.
- Geographic coverage and the distance between users, servers and the RPC service.
These factors affect reliability and observed latency even when the on-chain program is unchanged. A prototype that works against a public endpoint may need a private service, caching, connection management and rate-limit planning before it can support real users.
Ecosystem evidence that can be stated confidently
NEAR’s ecosystem retrospective names NEAR Intents integrations involving Ledger, CoW Swap, ThorSwap, Rango Exchange, ShapeShift, Rubic Exchange, Infinex, SwapKit, HOT Bridge and Rhea. These names demonstrate integrations reported by NEAR; they are not an independent ranking of ecosystem size, application activity or developer count.

The available Solana material supports discussion of RPC infrastructure, fee markets and sponsorship. It does not provide a matching census of applications or developers. Claims that Solana has a larger ecosystem, or that NEAR has more developers, would require the same dated methodology and activity definition for both networks.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Production requirements beyond the chain itself
RPC capacity and reliability
RPC is the interface through which wallets and applications submit transactions, read state and receive notifications. Solana’s production guide specifically recommends choosing private RPC access according to peak request rate, methods, subscriptions, history and geography. Apply the same discipline when deploying a NEAR application: identify the read-heavy endpoints, estimate burst traffic and test failure behavior rather than selecting an endpoint solely by advertised throughput.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Plan for separate read and write paths where appropriate, bounded retries, observability and a fallback strategy. A retry that blindly resubmits a transaction can create duplicate fees or duplicate application actions, so use idempotency keys or state checks for operations where repetition is dangerous.
Wallets, sponsorship and account recovery
Decide whether users will bring their own wallet, create an account through a passkey-style flow or use a hybrid model. If the application pays gas, define who can sponsor, how funds are replenished, what limits apply per account and what happens when the sponsor balance or risk threshold is reached. On Solana, the fee-payer arrangement requires both parties to sign; document that signing flow in the client so a user does not mistake a missing sponsor signature for a network outage.
Cross-chain integrations
Choose integrations based on the assets, venues and messaging routes your product actually needs. NEAR’s named NEAR Intents partners show possible routes, but an integration listed by the network does not guarantee support for every token, region or transaction type. Verify current asset support, settlement time, fees and operational status before committing your architecture.
Quick Recap
NEAR vs Solana: which should you choose?
Choose NEAR when these priorities dominate
- You want to investigate a sharded architecture and the scaling model described by Nightshade.
- Your product benefits from passkey-oriented onboarding or application-paid gas.
- Rust or JavaScript contract development fits your team.
- Your required cross-chain routes align with the NEAR Intents integrations you have verified.
- Your own workload tests confirm that shard behavior, finality and costs meet the product’s service-level targets.
Choose Solana when these priorities dominate
- Your application needs an explicit fee market with a base charge and optional compute-based priority pricing.
- You are prepared to operate or purchase private RPC access sized for peak traffic, subscriptions, history and geography.
- You need a designated fee payer and can implement sponsor-wallet controls, rate limits and monitoring.
- Your team’s required tooling and integrations are already available and tested on Solana.
- Your measurements show that the network and RPC configuration meet your latency and throughput targets at the fees you are willing to pay.
Use a scorecard instead of a universal winner
| Decision area | Questions to answer | Evidence currently available |
|---|---|---|
| Latency and finality | What are median and tail confirmation times for your exact transactions? | NEAR publishes 600 ms blocks and 1.2 s finality; no like-for-like Solana result is established here. |
| Throughput | How many successful operations per second are needed at peak, and what state contention exists? | NEAR advertises 1 million TPS scalability and reports a one-million-TPS benchmark milestone; this is not a sustained cross-chain test. |
| Fees | What is the total cost after signatures, compute, priority pricing, gas, storage and retries? | Solana documents 5,000 lamports per signature plus optional priority fees; NEAR reports typical costs below $0.01 and averages near $0.0002 without an equivalent measurement window. |
| Developer experience | Which languages, account model and signing flow can your team support? | NEAR highlights Rust, JavaScript, passkeys and gas sponsorship; Solana documentation here emphasizes fee and infrastructure mechanics. |
| Operations | What RPC rate, history, subscriptions, regions and failover are required? | Solana’s guide explicitly lists these production selection criteria; apply equivalent workload testing to either network. |
| Integrations | Which assets, exchanges, bridges or messaging partners are essential? | NEAR names several NEAR Intents integrations; availability and scope must be verified for your use case. |
Common comparison mistakes
- Equating block time with user-perceived completion: A fast block does not guarantee that an application’s RPC, wallet or finality policy will respond equally quickly.
- Comparing unlike fee numbers: A base fee per signature is not the same measurement as an average dollar cost with an unspecified transaction mix.
- Treating a TPS headline as sustained throughput: Benchmark conditions, transaction complexity and shard or state behavior determine what users experience.
- Ignoring failed transactions: Solana’s documentation says fees are charged even when a transaction fails; retries need an explicit budget.
- Assuming an integration list is an ecosystem census: Named partners show examples, not relative developer activity or application usage.
- Testing only a public RPC endpoint: Endpoint rate limits and geography can dominate latency and reliability in a production test.
- Leaving sponsorship controls until launch: A sponsored flow needs wallet funding, authorization boundaries, rate limits and abuse monitoring before users arrive.
A practical evaluation plan
- Write the workload specification. List every transaction type, reads per user, expected concurrency, payload size, signer count and acceptable confirmation level.
- Set measurable targets. Define maximum confirmation and finality latency, peak successful operations per second, monthly fee budget and acceptable failure rate.
- Build equivalent prototypes. Use the same user journey, retry policy, regional test locations and observability on NEAR and Solana.
- Configure production-like access. Include the private RPC capacity, WebSocket subscriptions, history queries and sponsor behavior your launch design will require.
- Run sustained and burst tests. Capture median and tail latency, throughput, failed operations, retries, fees and resource usage during both normal and congested periods.
- Audit integration assumptions. Confirm that each bridge, exchange, wallet, token and account-recovery path supports the exact assets and jurisdictions you need.
- Recheck dynamic facts before launch. Fee parameters, performance claims, shard counts, RPC offerings and integration rosters can change; validate them against the current official documentation.
Bottom line
NEAR is the stronger candidate when Nightshade’s sharding model, passkey-oriented onboarding, Rust or JavaScript development and sponsored gas fit your product. Solana is the stronger candidate when an explicit priority-fee market, fee-payer sponsorship and mature production RPC planning fit your workload. NEAR’s published 600 ms blocks, 1.2 second finality and 1 million-TPS scalability claim cannot, by themselves, prove that it is faster than Solana, and the fee figures available for the two networks are not measured on an equivalent basis. Run the same workload on both before making a network-wide claim or a production commitment.
