NEAR fees are paid in NEAR, calculated from deterministic gas units and a block-by-block gas price. Staking means delegating NEAR to a validator, not locking coins in a risk-free savings account. The network documents low example fees and a 2.5% annualized validator-reward target, but neither figure is a guaranteed dollar cost or personal staking return. The practical risks are validator performance and slashing, application-level transaction ordering, and additional bridge and asset-support risk when you move tokens across chains.
What NEAR gas pays for
NEAR calls transaction execution fees gas. A transaction specifies how much computation it may use in deterministic gas units. The protocol multiplies the gas actually used by the gas price applicable to the block, producing a charge in NEAR. The same action therefore has a predictable gas-unit requirement while its NEAR-denominated cost can change as network demand changes. The current gas price is recalculated each block and has a protocol floor; a number copied from a website or an old transaction is not a reliable live quote. NEAR’s documentation says to query the current value through RPC rather than treat a displayed figure as permanent (NEAR gas documentation).
Gas is paid in the native NEAR token. It is not a separate “gas token,” and buying more gas does not mean purchasing a priority service. Attaching a larger gas allowance lets execution consume up to that limit; it does not move a transaction ahead of other transactions. Under the documented refund rules, unused gas and the difference created by paying above the applicable price are returned. A wallet should still leave enough NEAR to cover the maximum it authorizes, because an insufficient balance can prevent submission or execution.

There is no single permanent answer. The live price depends on the block and must be read from an RPC endpoint or a wallet that performs that query. The documentation’s examples are easier to use as order-of-magnitude references than as a current quote:

| Action | Documented example | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| NEAR transfer | 0.000045 NEAR | Example at the stated minimum gas price; the dollar value changes with NEAR’s market price and the applicable execution conditions. |
| Function call | Up to 0.1 NEAR | Example at that minimum-price setting; complexity and execution determine the amount used. |
| Account creation state deposit | 0.007 NEAR | A fixed persistent-state charge described by the protocol, separate from ordinary execution gas. |
These figures and the protocol explanation are on the official gas page. They are not fixed dollar prices, universal wallet quotes, or a promise that every function call reaches the stated maximum.
Why does creating an account cost extra?
NEAR distinguishes the execution fee from the storage needed to keep an account in the network’s persistent state. The documented account-creation charge is 0.007 NEAR under the described protocol rules. That amount is not simply an additional transfer-gas line item; it funds the account’s persistent state. A transaction can therefore involve both gas for work performed and a state-related charge when a new account is created. Check the wallet’s transaction breakdown before approving it so you know which part is execution and which part is account state (NEAR gas documentation).
Does attaching more gas make a transaction faster?
No. Extra attached gas is an execution allowance, not a bid for priority. If the call uses less than the allowance, the unused amount is refunded according to protocol rules. A transaction can still fail for contract logic, an invalid action, a stale account state, or an insufficient balance even when a large gas limit was attached. Increasing the allowance is appropriate only when the contract requires more computation and your wallet or the contract documentation indicates a higher limit.

What is the gas-refund fee?
The gas documentation describes a refund fee for unused gas introduced with protocol version 78. It also states that the fee remains at zero while projects adapt and describes a planned formula. Because activation and parameters can change, do not assume a non-zero deduction or a zero deduction without checking the current protocol documentation and the wallet’s final transaction preview. This is a protocol detail that should be verified at the time of a large or repeated operation (NEAR gas documentation).
How NEAR staking works
NEAR uses proof of stake. Token holders delegate NEAR to validators; validators process transactions, participate in consensus, and record network state. Delegation gives a validator voting and economic weight without handing the holder a validator’s server keys. The validator page says a validator that misbehaves can be slashed and have stake burned. That is a network-security mechanism, not a guarantee that a delegator’s principal is protected or that every validator will perform well (NEAR validator documentation).
What the 2.5% figure means
NEAR’s validator documentation describes a target reward amount equal to 2.5% of total supply on an annualized basis. It also says rewards are paid regardless of fee burn. This is validator-level protocol economics, not a promised 2.5% APY for each person who delegates. A delegator’s realized result depends on the validator’s commission, uptime and participation, the timing of deposits and withdrawals, the validator’s current status, and the market price of NEAR. A wallet may display an estimated rate, but that estimate is not the same as the protocol-wide target and can change as validator terms or network parameters change.

How to compare staking choices
Before delegating, compare the terms that determine your net result and your ability to get funds back:

A lower advertised rate can be offset by a lower commission or better participation, while a high commission reduces the amount that reaches you.
- Unbonding and withdrawal conditions: read the current delay and any epoch-related steps before treating delegated NEAR as immediately spendable. The exact live conditions are validator- and protocol-dependent and should be checked in the current interface.
- Custody and keys: determine whether you control the account keys or whether a service controls them. Delegation does not remove the need to protect recovery credentials.
- Net payment: calculate the amount credited after commission and any service charge, rather than comparing a headline protocol percentage.
The cited validator documentation explains the role, rewards, and slashing model, but it does not establish a current table of commissions or withdrawal terms for every validator. Those values must be verified in the live staking interface before you delegate.
NEAR token economics: rewards, burns, and contract rebates
NEAR has several jobs in this model: it pays execution gas, supports account state, and is the asset delegated to validators. Transaction fees also affect supply. The gas documentation says 30% of gas fees burned while executing a contract goes to that contract’s account as a developer incentive. The validator documentation describes other collected transaction fees, after that contract rebate, as burned. In other words, a contract rebate and a fee burn can coexist: the rebate is credited to the contract account, while the remaining described fee portion is removed from circulation (gas documentation; validator documentation).

Validator rewards are described separately from those burns. The 2.5% annualized target is measured against total supply at the protocol level; it does not tell you how many NEAR you will receive, when you will receive them, or whether the market value of those rewards will rise. To evaluate a staking decision, keep the accounting categories separate: gross protocol issuance, validator commission, your delegated share, fee burns, contract rebates, and the market price you ultimately receive.
Network operation and practical security risks
NEAR documentation describes a decentralized network of independent computers, accounts, smart contracts, wallets, and frontends. Validators validate and record transactions and execute decentralized code (Why NEAR?; building blocks documentation). Those pages explain the intended architecture; they are not an independent security audit or a guarantee of uninterrupted availability, bug-free contracts, or safe application behavior.

Transaction-pool visibility and front-running
NEAR’s security guidance says validators can see transactions in the transaction pool before execution. In an application where ordering changes the outcome, that visibility can enable front-running: an observer may submit a competing transaction that executes first. Examples include contests, trades, or other actions with a valuable ordering advantage. This is application-dependent, not a claim that every NEAR transfer is front-run. Developers can reduce exposure with appropriate contract design and transaction-ordering protections, while users should treat an unfamiliar application that promises a guaranteed execution order with caution (NEAR front-running guidance).

Smart-contract and wallet failure
- A contract can contain a bug or intentionally perform an action different from what its interface suggests.
- A wallet or frontend can display a misleading recipient, function call, or allowance if it is compromised.
- Sending to the wrong account or chain is generally an operational error, not a gas problem; fees do not create a reversal mechanism.
- Protect seed phrases and signing keys offline where practical, and review the destination, method, amount, and network before signing.
Low example fees reduce the cost of an ordinary transaction; they do not remove these application, custody, or user-interface risks.

Moving an asset between NEAR and another chain adds components that do not exist in a direct NEAR transfer. NEAR’s Intents documentation refers to Omni Bridge and PoA Bridge and describes deposits and bridge settlement. The bridge page characterizes centralized risk as comparable to that of existing NEP-141 tokens. That means the bridge or supporting operators can become an additional trust and availability point; a successful NEAR transaction alone does not guarantee that the destination asset will arrive.
Before a cross-chain deposit or withdrawal, verify all of the following in the current official interface:
- The asset is supported on both the source and destination sides.
- The selected source and destination chains are the ones you intend to use.
- The account format and destination address match the receiving chain.
- The displayed route, settlement state, and any bridge instructions are current.
- You understand which amount is protocol gas and which amounts represent bridge, destination-chain, or service costs.
The Intents FAQ advises caution around deposits and recommends beginning with a small amount when experimenting. Do not copy an illustrative address from documentation; use the address shown for your own current transaction. Bridge support and parameters can change, so read the live pages before sending (Intents Bridge; Intents FAQs).
Direct NEAR transfer versus a cross-chain transfer
| Consideration | Direct NEAR transaction | Cross-chain route |
|---|---|---|
| Base execution charge | NEAR gas based on gas used and the block’s gas price. | Source-chain gas plus whatever execution or settlement the route requires. |
| Asset support | Use a valid NEAR account and supported asset/action. | Both chains, the bridge, and the specific token representation must support the route. |
| Additional trust surface | Wallet, contract, and validator/network operation. | Those risks plus bridge operators, settlement, destination-chain operation, and route availability. |
| Recovery concern | Wrong account or contract interaction can be difficult or impossible to reverse. | A wrong chain, unsupported asset, or wrong destination can strand funds or require bridge support. |
The documentation does not establish one universal bridge fee. Treat any displayed quote as route-specific and current rather than assuming that the 0.000045 NEAR transfer example applies to the entire cross-chain operation.
A safe workflow for paying gas or staking
- Fund the correct account: acquire enough NEAR through a service available in your jurisdiction, then confirm the receiving account and network before sending. Keep a small balance for future gas even if most NEAR is delegated.
- Preview the transaction: inspect the action, contract, method, amount, gas allowance, storage or account-creation charge, and recipient. Reject a request that does not match what you intended.
- Check the live price: use the wallet’s current RPC-derived estimate or query the documented RPC method. Do not rely on a cached “gas price now” number.
- For staking, inspect the validator: verify status, commission, participation, custody arrangement, and current unbonding or withdrawal rules before confirming delegation.
- For bridges, test small: confirm asset and chain support, send a small amount first, and wait for the route’s settlement status before attempting a larger transfer.
- Keep records: save the transaction hash, destination, and route details. These records help distinguish a pending settlement from a wrong address or unsupported asset.
Bottom line for NEAR users
Use NEAR’s gas model as a variable calculation, not a fixed price list: gas used multiplied by the current block gas price, with refunds governed by protocol rules. Treat 0.000045 NEAR, up to 0.1 NEAR, and 0.007 NEAR as documented examples or parameters with their stated context, not dollar guarantees. Staking is delegated validator participation; the documented 2.5% target describes validator economics, while your net result depends on validator terms, timing, fees, and NEAR’s market value. Finally, a direct transaction, a smart-contract interaction, and a bridge transfer have different risk surfaces. Verify the current route and asset support, protect your keys, and start with a small amount when the operation is unfamiliar.
