Yes. Neanderthals and the ancestors of modern humans interbred. DNA segments inherited from Neanderthals remain in present-day human genomes, especially outside Africa. A 2025 Nature study summarizes the Neanderthal contribution in present-day non-Africans as about 2–3% and uses approximately 45,000-year-old genomes to place a shared admixture event at roughly 45,000–49,000 years ago.
Those figures are population-level estimates, not an exact percentage for every person or a witnessed date on a calendar. Genome comparisons with ancient and living DNA, together with demographic models, produce these estimates. The evidence establishes gene flow between the groups, while leaving the precise people, place and number of encounters unknown.
What the genetic evidence establishes
Modern humans and Neanderthals were separate human populations with long histories in Europe and western Asia. Their genomes nevertheless contain matching segments that are best explained by ancestry moving from Neanderthals into the ancestors of living people. The segments occur in present-day genomes and in ancient modern-human genomes, so the conclusion does not depend on a single modern sample or on a resemblance in fossil anatomy.
The strongest current summary comes from Sümer and colleagues in Nature (2025): approximately 2–3% of the ancestry of present-day non-Africans derives from Neanderthals. The article was published online on 12 December 2024 and appears in volume 638, pages 711–717. Read the Nature study.

“Non-Africans” is important wording. It describes a broad population comparison, not a fixed value that applies identically to every individual, community or chromosome. People carry different Neanderthal-derived segments, and a population average should not be read as a personal genetic test result.
Interbreeding does not mean Neanderthals disappeared into modern humans
Gene flow can occur between populations that remain recognizably distinct for thousands of years. The DNA evidence indicates that some Neanderthal ancestry entered the lineage leading to present-day non-Africans; it does not imply that all Neanderthals became modern humans or that the two populations merged completely. Most of each population’s ancestry still came from its own broader population history.
What “2–3% Neanderthal ancestry” means
The estimate refers to the fraction of ancestry in present-day non-African populations that can be assigned to Neanderthal sources using genome comparisons. It is not a statement that 2–3% of a person’s body, traits or identity is “Neanderthal,” and it does not predict behavior, intelligence or personality. An ancestry percentage describes inherited DNA, not a package of visible characteristics.

Some stretches of Neanderthal-derived DNA have been retained more often than others, partly because natural selection and random inheritance affect which segments survive over many generations. The study’s headline figure should therefore be reported as “about 2–3% in present-day non-Africans,” with the population and approximation attached.

The estimate also concerns ancestry detectable in genomes today. It is not the proportion of the entire ancient Neanderthal population that contributed genes, nor the percentage of all modern-human ancestry everywhere in the world. Populations with different histories can have different amounts of detectable Neanderthal ancestry.
How an unobserved event can be dated
Genomes preserve segments inherited from earlier populations. When a Neanderthal-derived segment appears in many unrelated modern-human genomes, comparisons of its length, distribution and presence in ancient genomes can be made. Combining those observations with the ages of excavated remains allows a demographic model to estimate when the ancestral populations exchanged genes.
The Ranis genomes provide an unusually early anchor. Sümer and colleagues analyzed one high-coverage genome and five low-coverage genomes from approximately 45,000-year-old remains at Ilsenhöhle in Ranis, Germany. They also generated a further high-coverage genome from the Zlatý kůň individual in Czechia. The study reports distant familial relationships between individuals from Ranis and Zlatý kůň.
Segments in the Ranis individuals are consistent with a single admixture event shared with all non-Africans sequenced in that study. Their inferred date for that shared event is approximately 45,000–49,000 years ago. This is a population-genetic inference constrained by ancient DNA, not a directly observed mating encounter. The study’s methods and date are described by Sümer et al.

What the Ranis and Zlatý kůň samples contribute
| Evidence | What was studied | What it helps establish |
|---|---|---|
| Ranis, Germany | One high-coverage and five low-coverage genomes from remains approximately 45,000 years old | Early modern-human genomes carrying Neanderthal-derived segments and a time constraint on their shared population history |
| Zlatý kůň, Czechia | A newly generated high-coverage genome | Additional ancient-genome comparison and distant familial links with the Ranis individuals |
| Present-day non-Africans | Living genomes used in the study’s comparisons | A surviving Neanderthal ancestry estimate of about 2–3% at the population level |
The individuals sampled at Ranis and Zlatý kůň belonged to a small, isolated population, according to the study. That detail matters: their history is informative, but it should not be generalized automatically to every early modern-human group in Europe or Asia.
Ancient genomes versus present-day genomes
Each type of genome answers a different question. Present-day genomes show which Neanderthal-derived DNA survived through later population growth, migration, natural selection and chance inheritance. They provide broad evidence that the gene flow had descendants who contributed to living populations.
Ancient genomes place that ancestry closer to the time when the populations lived. A dated skeleton with preserved DNA can show that a particular population already carried a segment by a given time. In the Ranis study, genomes from approximately 45,000 years ago help constrain when the shared admixture history occurred, rather than merely showing that the ancestry exists now.

| Did the ancestry persist? | Present-day non-African genomes | The 2–3% value is an approximate population summary, not an individual constant |
| When did a shared event occur? | Ancient genomes with archaeological dates, compared under demographic models | The 45,000–49,000-year range is inferred, not a witnessed timestamp |
| How did early groups relate to one another? | Multiple ancient genomes, including Ranis and Zlatý kůň | Small samples cannot represent every early population |
Why the date is a model-based estimate
A calendar date is not read directly from a DNA segment. It is estimated by fitting observations to models of population size, separation, migration and inheritance. The inferred date changes as the available genomes and assumptions change. In this case, the study’s approximately 45,000–49,000-year estimate is the result of comparing the Ranis genomes with sequenced non-African populations and archaeological ages.

A separate 2025 paper by Tournebize and Chikhi highlights an important caution: ignoring population structure in hominin evolutionary models can produce spurious admixture-event inferences. If a model treats a structured population as one randomly mixing group, shared genetic patterns can be misread as evidence for a particular migration or interbreeding episode. See the Nature Ecology & Evolution analysis.
This warning does not erase the Neanderthal ancestry signal. It explains why scientists distinguish the robust observation—shared Neanderthal-derived DNA—from the more conditional reconstruction of exactly when, where and how gene flow happened. The safest wording is that the Ranis study infers a shared admixture event at approximately 45,000–49,000 years ago under its demographic analysis.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What the evidence says about their relationship
They were different populations capable of gene flow
The genomes support a relationship that was neither complete isolation nor total merger. Neanderthals and modern-human ancestors had been separate for long periods, yet biological barriers were not absolute. At least some offspring of encounters survived and reproduced, allowing Neanderthal-derived segments to enter the modern-human gene pool.
The gene flow was ancient, not a recent historical event
The ancestry found in living non-Africans comes from population events tens of thousands of years ago. The ancient genomes and the study’s date place the shared episode deep in the period when modern humans were spreading beyond Africa and encountering other hominin populations. The evidence does not identify one “first meeting” or prove that only one encounter ever occurred; it supports the shared event inferred in the study’s model.

Early modern-human groups were not all the same
Ranis and Zlatý kůň are connected by distant familial relationships and belong to a small, isolated population in the study’s reconstruction. That finding reveals a particular social and demographic history, not a universal template for every group living at the time. Other early populations may have had different degrees of isolation, migration and contact.
A short timeline of the evidence
- Hundreds of thousands of years ago: Neanderthals lived across Europe and western Asia while modern-human populations developed their own histories.
- Approximately 45,000–49,000 years ago: The Ranis study infers the shared admixture event that contributed Neanderthal ancestry to the ancestors of sequenced non-Africans.
- Approximately 45,000 years ago: The Ranis remains at Ilsenhöhle preserve genomes from an early modern-human population carrying relevant ancestry segments.
- Later generations: Recombination, migration, natural selection and chance inheritance reshaped the Neanderthal-derived segments.
- Today: Present-day non-African populations retain an approximate 2–3% Neanderthal ancestry estimate in the study’s summary.
- 2010: An NHGRI account of the first Neanderthal whole-genome sequence reported an earlier preliminary estimate of “up to 2 percent” for present-day people outside Africa. That historical estimate is lower and less current than the 2025 study’s 2–3% summary. Read the NHGRI 2010 account.
What genetics cannot tell us yet
- The exact encounter location: The genomes do not identify a particular cave, valley or shoreline where interbreeding occurred.
- The exact number of encounters: A model can describe a shared admixture event without naming every contact episode that may have contributed to the surviving signal.
- The identities of the individuals: No sequenced genome can identify the specific Neanderthals and modern humans who produced the ancestors of living people.
- Universal ancestry percentages: About 2–3% applies to present-day non-Africans as a population summary; it is not a fixed result for every individual.
- Every early population’s history: Ranis and Zlatý kůň represent sampled individuals from a particular small, isolated population, not all people alive in the period.
- A complete social story: DNA can reveal ancestry and gene flow, but it cannot by itself reconstruct whether contacts were peaceful, coercive, repeated, brief or embedded in particular cultural practices.
How to read claims about Neanderthal DNA
A reliable explanation should keep three distinctions together. First, separate a measured observation from an inferred history: genome sequences and radiometric or archaeological ages are observations, while an admixture date is a model-based interpretation. Second, distinguish a population estimate from an individual result: “about 2–3% in present-day non-Africans” is accurate, while “everyone has exactly 2.5%” is not. Third, distinguish ancestry from traits: carrying a Neanderthal-derived segment does not mean a person is partly Neanderthal in a cultural or behavioral sense.
It is also useful to check the date and source of a claim. The NHGRI’s 2010 release was an important milestone, but its “up to 2 percent” figure was preliminary. The more recent Nature study provides the current estimate used here and adds ancient genomes that constrain the timing. Neither source claims that genetics directly witnessed an encounter.

Why this matters for human evolution
The result changes the old picture of human evolution as a simple replacement in which one population vanished without contributing genes. Modern humans expanded while Neanderthals declined as a distinct population, yet some Neanderthal ancestry crossed into the lineage that survives today. Evolutionary history can therefore include competition, separation, movement and interbreeding at the same time.
The finding also demonstrates why ancient DNA is valuable. Present-day genomes preserve the long-term outcome, while ancient genomes can reveal which populations already carried the signal near the time of contact. As more high-quality ancient genomes become available, estimates of population structure and dates can be tested and refined rather than treated as final eyewitness accounts.
