The photographs in Much Here Is Beautiful: Photography Surveys of the U.S. Bicentennial come from a National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) grant program that commissioned regional projects to document the country’s people and places around the 1976 Bicentennial. The Smithsonian American Art Museum (SAAM) presents 225 photographs from that wider effort in Washington, D.C., from September 18, 2026, through April 18, 2027. Admission is free.
What the NEA’s Bicentennial photography program did
The NEA created a grant program for regional photographic surveys in celebration of the United States’ 1976 Bicentennial. The program lasted six years and funded more than 70 surveys, producing thousands of photographs by more than 200 photographers, according to SAAM’s exhibition page.
The projects ranged across the Northeast, South, Midwest and West. Together, they offer a broad portrait of the country, from California’s coast to the Kansas heartland and New York City. The museum says the effort was inspired by the Farm Security Administration’s photography during the Great Depression.
SAAM received 1,000 photographs from the project in 1983. That transfer is not the same as the exhibition: the current show selects 225 photographs and sets them within a longer history of federal survey photography, including work dating to the 19th century. The selection draws on research into SAAM’s holdings and collections around the country, bringing together works that include newly surfaced and previously unseen photographs.

What you can see in the exhibition
The photographs document different places and lives rather than presenting a single, uniform view of the country. The museum’s online gallery, which features selected works, includes:
- Terry Evans’s 1974 photograph Migrant Workers, from the Kansas Documentary Survey Project.
- Wendy Ewald’s 1977 photograph Rena Meade’s Quilt.
- Ted Wathen’s 1975 photograph Former Company Houses, Jenkins, Letcher County, Kentucky.
- Robert K. Hower’s July 4, 1976, Louisville, KY.
The dates show why the exhibition should not be described as 225 photographs all taken in 1976. It presents a curated selection connected to the surveys and their broader history; the examples include photographs made before and after the Bicentennial year.

How this project differs from DOCUMERICA
The NEA’s Bicentennial surveys are sometimes easy to confuse with another federal photography project, but they are separate efforts. The Environmental Protection Agency’s DOCUMERICA project ran from 1971 to 1977. The National Archives describes its photographers as documenting environmental problems, EPA activities and everyday life; more than 15,000 DOCUMERICA images are available in the National Archives Catalog.
| Project | Agency and purpose | Scale and access |
|---|---|---|
| NEA Bicentennial surveys | NEA regional grants to document people and places around the 1976 Bicentennial. | More than 70 surveys and more than 200 photographers; SAAM’s exhibition selects 225 photographs, with selected works online. |
| DOCUMERICA | EPA project documenting environmental issues, EPA activities and everyday life, 1971–1977. | More than 15,000 images available in the National Archives Catalog. |
The numbers describe different things: the NEA program’s funded surveys and photographers, SAAM’s exhibition selection, and DOCUMERICA’s catalogued images. DOCUMERICA’s scale should not be used to describe the Bicentennial surveys.
