NDR evasion techniques are behaviors that obscure network activity or reduce the evidence available to network detection and response tools. They do not necessarily erase all evidence: even when payloads are hidden, connection metadata, traffic patterns, endpoints, and host context can still help defenders investigate.

How NDR evasion affects network visibility

“NDR evasion” is an umbrella term, not the name of one MITRE ATT&CK technique. ATT&CK describes several behaviors that can complicate network monitoring, including protocol tunneling (T1572), encrypted channels (T1573), proxies (T1090), non-standard encoding (T1132), and impairment of defensive tools or logs.

These behaviors affect different parts of an investigation. Encryption or encoding can limit what a sensor can learn from content; tunneling can make one kind of traffic appear inside another; proxies can make it harder to identify the original source; and impaired logging can remove evidence that would otherwise be collected. A particular sensor may lose visibility without all evidence disappearing across the environment.

Techniques that can weaken NDR visibility

Behavior How it complicates monitoring Defensive focus
Protocol tunneling (T1572) One protocol is carried inside another, potentially blending with ordinary traffic or adding encryption. Look for protocol and port mismatches, unexpected encapsulation, unusual flow patterns, and process-to-network relationships that do not fit the asset’s role.
Encrypted channels (T1573) Encryption conceals channel contents from payload inspection. Assess connection metadata, destinations, timing, volume, TLS behavior, and host context. Decryption is a policy decision, not a universal requirement.
Proxies and relay chains (T1090) Intermediaries obscure direct connections; multiple relays can make source tracing more difficult. Correlate sustained or unusual outbound sessions with asset roles and other available telemetry.
Non-standard encoding (T1132) Encoded command-and-control content can differ from expected protocol formats and frustrate content inspection. Check protocol conformance and application behavior, and investigate deviations with metadata and host evidence.
Defense or logging impairment Disabling or modifying defensive tools or logs can reduce the evidence collected. Monitor sensor health and logging configuration, alert on telemetry loss, and protect administrative access and change paths.

What defenders can still observe

MITRE ATT&CK’s Protocol Tunneling detection guidance describes several useful leads: processes such as plink.exe, ssh.exe, or netsh.exe making outbound connections; traffic patterns consistent with encapsulated protocols; abnormal connect or bind behavior; and encrypted traffic on ports normally associated with unencrypted services. The guidance also identifies outlier traffic volumes, DNS-over-HTTPS clients, and unexpected tunneling from management-plane systems as examples to examine.

These observations are not proof of malicious activity or an exhaustive signature list. SSH, network utilities, encrypted connections, and remote-administration software can be legitimate. Check software inventory, approved administration, expected protocol use, and the system’s role before escalating a lead.

When payload contents are unavailable, compare what remains visible: source and destination, connection timing and duration, volume and direction of flows, protocol and port use, and whether the connection is expected for that host. Where available, correlate those observations with endpoint process data or identity context. No single indicator establishes intent on its own.

How to strengthen coverage

Baseline normal network behavior

Document expected protocols, destinations, flow sizes, and management-plane activity for important asset groups. A deviation becomes more useful when analysts can compare it with the normal role of the affected system rather than treating a port, process name, or destination as suspicious by itself.

Cover the paths that matter

Review whether sensors and logs cover the network segments, cloud environments, remote users, east-west traffic, and management networks relevant to your organization. Network evidence is more useful when it can be connected to host or identity evidence where those sources are available. Monitor collection health so that missing telemetry is visible to the people responsible for investigating it.

  • 【DPI protection】Deep Packet Inspection with visual dashboards blocks adult/gambling/malicious sites, while SQM and QoS prioritize gaming, calls, and video when bandwidth is tight
  • 【OpenWrt & USB 3.0 Expansion】OpenWrt with 1GB DDR4 and 8GB eMMC lets you install plugins and build VPN, ad-blocking or NAS, while USB 3.0 Type‑C connects high-speed storage or 4G/5G dongles

Layer controls rather than relying on one signal

  • Filter traffic to untrusted or known-bad domains and resources, while recognizing that destination blocking alone is not a guarantee against tunneling or relay use.
  • Consider network intrusion prevention for known malicious signatures or unexpected protocol standards and flows.
  • Segment networks to constrain access and reduce opportunities for lateral visibility abuse or network sniffing.
  • Encrypt sensitive traffic and use sound authentication practices. Encryption protects data in transit, but it also changes what payload-based monitoring can inspect.
  • Protect logging configuration, administrative access, and sensor change paths; alert when expected telemetry stops arriving.

MITRE ATT&CK’s guidance provides behavior-based detection and mitigation examples, not a guarantee that any one control will detect or prevent every technique.

How to assess an NDR approach

Do not rely on an “evasion-proof” claim. Assess whether the monitoring approach fits your network and investigation workflow across these dimensions:

Rank #4
Ubiquiti Cloud Gateway Ultra (UCG-Ultra)
  • Runs UniFi Network for full-stack network management
  • Manages 30+ UniFi Network devices and 300+ clients
  • 1 Gbps routing with IDS/IPS
  • Multi-WAN load balancing
  • 0.96" LCM status display
  • Visibility: Which flow metadata and protocols are available, how encrypted traffic is handled, and whether endpoint or process context can be correlated.
  • Coverage: Whether collection includes cloud, remote-user, east-west, management, encrypted, and tunneled paths that matter to your environment.
  • Detection: Whether the approach uses signatures, protocol-conformance checks, behavioral baselines, and correlation across data sources.
  • Operational fit: How analysts handle false positives, obtain investigation context, maintain deployment, and route alerts into response workflows.
  • Resilience: Whether sensor health, protected logging, segmentation, and missing telemetry are addressed.

These are practical evaluation criteria, not a ranking of products or a claim that every NDR system supports each capability.
