NCO (netCDF Operators) is a suite of standalone command-line programs for inspecting, transforming, and analysing scientific data stored in netCDF-accessible formats. You can use individual operators to select data, calculate averages and statistics, combine or derive data, and edit metadata, either interactively in a shell or in repeatable scripts.

What NCO does

NCO is a set of focused shell-level tools, not a graphical data-analysis application. Each operator accepts input file or files, performs a particular operation, and can write a processed output file. The official guide describes examples including averaging, hyperslabbing (selecting a portion of an array), and renaming.

That makes NCO useful when you need to handle scientific array data without leaving a netCDF-oriented command-line workflow. Climate researchers and geoscientists use it, but the project’s guide describes the tools as general-purpose for netCDF data.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Task Operator What it does
Select or inspect data, including a subset of variables or dimensions ncks Performs selection and related operations on netCDF data.
Calculate record averages ncra Computes averages across records.
Calculate weighted averages ncwa Computes weighted averages.
Rename a variable or dimension ncrename Renames netCDF variables or dimensions.

Other NCO uses include deriving fields, calculating statistics, printing data, comparing or combining files, and changing metadata. Exact behavior depends on the operator and its options; use the manual entry for the command you plan to run rather than assuming that all operators handle files identically.

How to approach a command-line workflow

  1. Identify the desired result. Specify which variables and dimensions you need, whether you need an aggregation such as an average, and what output you want to preserve.
  2. Check your environment. The guide’s build and use discussion requires netCDF. Check the installed NCO and netCDF versions and the features of the libraries linked to your NCO build.
  3. Pick the operator for the operation. For example, use ncks for selection, ncra for record averaging, ncwa for weighted averaging, or ncrename for renaming.
  4. Confirm the command details. Read the current operator documentation for its exact options, input and output expectations, and format-specific limits.
  5. Run it on the intended input and check the output. Confirm that the resulting variables, dimensions, metadata, and file format fit the next step in your workflow.

This task-first approach also applies to questions such as converting hourly measurements to daily mean temperature: define the time records and the desired aggregation, then check the relevant NCO operator documentation for the required syntax and assumptions.

Which file formats NCO can handle

The project describes NCO as working with netCDF-accessible formats, including DAP, HDF4, HDF5, and Zarr. That broad description is not a guarantee that every NCO build or operator supports every format in the same way.

The guide says a netCDF4-enabled NCO handles netCDF3 and netCDF4/HDF5 data. HDF4 support depends on linking against a netCDF library built with HDF4 support. Input and output formats can also depend on the input file and the operator, and the guide notes exceptions to format-conversion behavior.
