Choose NBN 100 when your household’s simultaneous internet use is moderate and the lower ongoing price is better value. Choose NBN 500 when several people regularly download, stream, back up files or work online at the same time, and your address is eligible for the tier. The right answer depends on concurrent demand, upload needs, connection technology, provider performance and your home Wi-Fi—not a fixed number of residents.
Check the actual speed and upload figures, your address eligibility and the provider’s typical busy-evening speed before switching. “NBN 100” and “NBN 500” are convenient labels, not identical products at every address.
What NBN 100 and NBN 500 mean in 2026
NBN plan names describe a download-speed class. They do not guarantee that every retailer uses the same product name, supplies the same upload speed or offers the tier on every NBN technology.
NBN Co announced that its Home Fast wholesale service for selected fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and hybrid fibre-coaxial (HFC) connections would increase from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps from September 2025. That is a wholesale change, not a promise that every retail plan labelled “NBN 100” became “NBN 500”. Your provider still has to offer the service at your address, and its retail plan may use different labels, inclusions or speed claims.

For a fair comparison, write the actual figures beside the marketing name. A plan described as 100/20 means up to 100 Mbps download and 20 Mbps upload at the wholesale or advertised service level; 500/50 means up to 500 Mbps download and 50 Mbps upload. The figures shown by a retailer, including its typical evening speed, take precedence over a generic tier name.
| Comparison point | NBN 100 | NBN 500 |
|---|---|---|
| Common download label | 100 Mbps class | 500 Mbps class |
| Wholesale figures relevant to the September 2025 Home Fast change | 100/20 Mbps before the selected upgrade | 500/50 Mbps for eligible FTTP and HFC services |
| Availability | Depends on the address, technology and retailer | Depends on the address, technology and retailer; do not assume it is available everywhere |
| Best fit | Moderate simultaneous use where the current service is coping | Heavy or simultaneous use where extra download and upload headroom has practical value |
| What the tier cannot fix | Weak Wi-Fi, unsuitable equipment, provider congestion, device limits or latency caused elsewhere in the connection | |
The ACCC’s April 2026 Measuring Broadband Australia report contains separate panels for NBN 100 on fibre-to-the-node (FTTN) and NBN 500 on HFC. That distinction is a useful reminder: the same tier label can sit on different access technologies, with different eligibility and real-world behaviour.
NBN 100: when it is the sensible choice
Moderate peak use
NBN 100 is usually adequate when the household’s busiest periods involve ordinary web use, video calls, streaming, gaming, connected appliances and occasional downloads without several large transfers happening at once. If everyone can use the connection comfortably today, moving to a faster tier may add little practical benefit.
Value matters more than the headline maximum
A lower-cost plan can be the better decision when the extra capacity of NBN 500 would sit unused. Compare the ongoing price after any introductory period, not just the first bill. Include activation charges, modem or router fees, contract conditions and any data or support differences.
Working from home, streaming and gaming are not automatic reasons to upgrade
Those activities have different requirements. A video meeting depends on stable latency and upload as well as download capacity. Gaming is usually more sensitive to latency, jitter and packet loss than to a very high download ceiling. Streaming needs enough sustained capacity for the number of simultaneous streams, but a faster access plan will not repair a poor wireless signal. NBN 100 should not be dismissed simply because one person works from home or the household watches online video.

NBN 500: when the extra capacity is useful
Several heavy users at the same time
NBN 500 is worth considering when multiple people regularly make substantial demands on the connection concurrently: large game or software downloads, cloud backups, high-resolution media, frequent file transfers, several work sessions or many active streams. The benefit is additional headroom, so one activity is less likely to compete with another during a busy period.
Large downloads finish sooner
Where the provider, technology, server and home network can deliver the advertised rate, a 500 Mbps-class plan can complete large downloads faster than a 100 Mbps-class plan. The improvement is most visible for large files and repeated transfers; it is less noticeable for ordinary browsing or a single light activity.

Upload-heavy households should inspect the upload figure
Upload matters for sending large files, backing up photographs and video to the cloud, hosting work material and handling simultaneous video calls. The 500/50 figures associated with the selected Home Fast wholesale upgrade provide more upload capacity than 100/20, but a retail plan may advertise different figures. Check the provider’s actual upload speed rather than inferring it from the download label.
Do not use a person-count rule
There is no authoritative rule that a particular number of residents or devices requires NBN 500. Two people who transfer large files all day may need more capacity than a larger household with light, staggered use. Count simultaneous demanding activities, not people or connected-device icons.
How to compare plans at your address
- Check the access technology and eligibility. Use the provider’s address checker and record whether the service is FTTP, HFC, FTTN or another NBN technology. Ask which speed tiers can actually be ordered at that address. Do not infer NBN 500 availability from the plan name or from a neighbour’s service.
- Record the provider’s typical busy-evening speed. Australian providers are expected to advertise a typical speed during the busy period of 7 pm to 11 pm. Compare that figure for each plan, especially if your household is most active at night. A maximum tier speed is not a substitute for the provider’s busy-evening result.
- Compare upload speed separately. Note the advertised upload figure and decide whether it covers your cloud backups, large-file transfers and simultaneous calls. Download and upload are different plan characteristics.
- Calculate the real ongoing cost. Compare the monthly price after an introductory offer ends. Add setup, delivery, modem, router or other recurring charges, and read the conditions attached to any promotion. Current retail prices vary and must be checked on the provider’s current plan page.
- Audit your home network. Check the router’s Wi-Fi generation, placement, Ethernet links and the capabilities of the devices that will use the service. A plan upgrade cannot overcome a wireless or device bottleneck.
- Check the exit and change process. Confirm whether the new plan has a contract, a notice requirement, a modem return condition or a fee for changing service. Keep the old service active until the new connection is working if uninterrupted access is essential and the provider’s terms allow it.
Why busy-evening speed is more useful than the tier name
The ACCC’s guidance uses 7 pm to 11 pm as the busy-evening period for typical-speed advertising. That is when many households stream, play games, attend online classes, work remotely and run backups at once. A provider’s typical evening figure gives you a more realistic basis for comparison than “up to” 100 or 500 Mbps.

ACCC performance measurements describe population-level results. They cannot guarantee the speed at one address, on one service, with one device, at one moment. Your access technology, provider’s capacity, local conditions, router and Wi-Fi can all produce a different result. Use the measurements to understand broad performance, then use the provider’s current address-specific information and your own tests to make the decision.
Connection technology changes the answer
FTTP
FTTP premises use fibre all the way to the property and are among the connections covered by the selected Home Fast wholesale speed change. Even so, the retailer must offer the tier at your address, and the retail product’s speed, upload and terms still need checking.
HFC
HFC premises were also included in the selected upgrade. The ACCC’s April 2026 report includes an NBN 500 HFC panel, but that does not mean every HFC address has identical service conditions. Confirm the exact tier and typical evening speed with the provider.
FTTN and other technologies
FTTN performance depends partly on the copper distance and line condition between the premises and the node. The April 2026 ACCC report separately lists an NBN 100 FTTN panel. Do not assume an FTTN household can order NBN 500 simply because the comparison exists; eligibility is address-specific. If the checker does not offer the tier, changing retailers will not manufacture availability.
Wi-Fi can hide the benefit of NBN 500
NBN Co reported that 26% of customers paying for wholesale download speeds of 500 Mbps were using Wi-Fi 4, which it described as having a typical maximum speed of 100 Mbps. This does not mean every Wi-Fi 4 installation is limited to exactly 100 Mbps, nor does it mean every customer needs a new router. It does show why the in-home network should be checked before paying for more access speed.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
NBN Co’s annual report states: “Customer experience, including speed, depends on your internet provider, plan, equipment quality and if you use the internet at peak times.” The plan is only one part of the path from the NBN connection to a phone, laptop, television or console.
Signs that Wi-Fi is the bottleneck
- A wired test near the router is substantially faster than a test in the usual room.
- Performance drops through walls or on a distant floor while a nearby device works well.
- Only older phones, laptops or smart devices show the problem.
- Several wireless devices slow down together even though the NBN service is provisioned correctly.
What to do before buying equipment
- Run a speed test over Ethernet from a modern computer, with other heavy activities paused.
- Repeat the test over Wi-Fi in the room where performance matters.
- Check the router’s Wi-Fi standard, firmware and placement; keep it clear of enclosed cabinets and major sources of interference.
- Test with a second recent device to rule out a single device’s radio or software limit.
- If the wired result supports the plan but Wi-Fi does not, consider a Wi-Fi 6 router or a mesh system for a larger home. Choose equipment only after checking compatibility with the modem or NBN termination device, house layout and client devices.
A new router changes the home network; it does not change the NBN plan’s wholesale or retail speed.
Price, promotions and value
There is no universal price difference between NBN 100 and NBN 500. Retail prices, introductory discounts, modem arrangements and contract terms change by provider and over time. Compare the full cost over the period you expect to stay, including the post-promotion rate.
Anna Brakey, an ACCC Commissioner, put the value question this way: “While NBN Co’s upgraded higher speed plans benefit large households with high broadband usage, many households may receive better value from a less expensive 25 Mbps or 50 Mbps speed plan depending on their household’s broadband usage,” The point applies to this comparison too: paying for the larger tier is sensible only when the household can use the additional capacity.

If the new plan does not feel faster
First, separate access speed from Wi-Fi speed
Test a wired device close to the router, then test Wi-Fi separately. If Ethernet is fast but wireless is slow, investigate the router, placement, radio band and client device before blaming the NBN plan.

Check the test conditions
Pause cloud backups, downloads and streaming on other devices. Repeat at a quiet time and during the 7 pm to 11 pm busy period. Use more than one recent device; a single old device can cap the result.
Confirm provisioning and eligibility
Ask the provider to confirm that the ordered tier is active, that the address is eligible for the advertised product and that the modem or NBN termination equipment is compatible. If the service is FTTN or another technology outside the selected upgrade, the expected NBN 500 tier may not be orderable.
Escalate a persistent service problem
Keep dated test results, the device and connection method used, and the time of each test. Give those details to the provider’s support team so it can distinguish a plan, access-line, provider-capacity or home-network problem.
A practical decision checklist
- Is NBN 500 actually available at the address?
- Which NBN technology serves the premises?
- What download and upload figures does the current provider advertise for each option?
- What is the typical speed from 7 pm to 11 pm?
- How often do several demanding activities occur simultaneously?
- Are large uploads, cloud backups or frequent file transfers important?
- What will the plan cost after the introductory period, including equipment and setup charges?
- Can the router, Wi-Fi and client devices deliver the extra speed?
- Would the money be better spent on improving the home network rather than increasing the access tier?
Bottom line
NBN 100 is the value choice for a household whose peak use is moderate and already comfortable. NBN 500 is the capacity choice for an eligible FTTP or HFC household that regularly has heavy simultaneous demand or substantial uploads. Check the address, technology, busy-evening speed, upload rate, total ongoing cost and Wi-Fi before switching; the tier label alone cannot answer the question.
