The PlayStation and Xbox game in the headline is most likely NBA 2K25. Secondary reports say its online services are scheduled to shut down after December 31, 2026, meaning online matches and server-connected modes are expected to stop working from January 1, 2027. That is not the same as the entire game becoming unplayable: selected offline modes are reported to remain available.
What the December 31 shutdown means
PlayStation Universe reported on October 5, 2026, that NBA 2K25 is scheduled to be removed from digital storefronts on October 30, 2026, with online services ending after December 31. This is a reported retirement of online services, not confirmation that the game as a whole will stop launching or that every mode will disappear. GamingBible’s October 6, 2026 report says selected offline modes will remain, while content requiring a connection to a 2K server will become unavailable. GamingBible names Play Now, MyNBA, and The W among the offline modes that remain after the shutdown; its report also refers to MyNBA modes. Treat this as reported guidance rather than a platform-by-platform guarantee. Any feature that depends on 2K’s servers is expected to be unavailable once those services end.

Will a physical copy keep online play working?
No. A disc or other physical copy does not preserve access to the publisher’s servers. It may provide a way to install and launch the game, but it does not bypass the reported online-service shutdown. The official NBA 2K25 FAQ lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and Steam for PC, and describes physical editions for selected platforms and markets. Edition availability varies by region, so check the exact console, edition, and territory before buying.
Platforms and online-play requirements
The official FAQ says cross-play is available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. It also states that online play requires an internet connection, a 2K account, and a separate paid subscription to the relevant console online service. Those requirements explain why owning the game alone does not guarantee online access, even before the reported service retirement.

The shutdown date and mode details above come from secondary reports; the official FAQ confirms platforms and online requirements, but is not itself the shutdown announcement. No original 2K service notice was established in the cited reporting, so the December 31 date should be understood as reported rather than as a direct official quotation.
