Natural gas currently produces more U.S. utility-scale electricity than renewables, but the two resources do different jobs in the grid. Preliminary U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) data for 2025 put natural gas at about 41% of utility-scale generation and renewables at about 24%. At the end of that year, gas represented 40.0% of installed utility-scale generating capacity. Those percentages describe different things: generation measures electricity actually produced over a year, while capacity measures the maximum output equipment could provide under specified conditions.
Many gas-fired units can be scheduled and adjusted when operators need them. Wind and solar produce when wind or sunlight is available, while hydropower, biomass and geothermal have different operating characteristics. The U.S. power grid combines all of these technologies, along with transmission, storage, demand flexibility and other generators, to balance supply and demand every moment.
What the 2025 numbers actually show
EIA’s preliminary 2025 figures provide the clearest starting point for a natural-gas-versus-renewables comparison. The figures below use the utility-scale generation and capacity definitions in EIA’s 2026 reporting. “Renewables” is a category that includes hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal; it is not a synonym for wind and solar alone.
| Measure | Natural gas | Renewables | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Share of U.S. utility-scale electricity generation in 2025 | About 41% | About 24% | Electricity produced during the year; preliminary EIA data |
| Share of U.S. utility-scale generating capacity at the end of 2025 | 40.0% | Not stated as one combined percentage in the cited figures | Installed capability, not annual output |
| Wind and solar utility-scale generation in 2025 | Not applicable | 760,000 GWh combined | Wind and solar are a subset of the broader renewable category |
| Wind and solar share of utility-scale generation in 2025 | Not applicable | 17% | Excludes small-scale solar from this denominator |
| Wind and solar share of total net generation in 2025 | Not applicable | 19% | Includes EIA’s estimate of small-scale solar |
The 41% and 24% shares are not a complete two-way contest. Other sources, including coal and nuclear, supplied the remaining utility-scale generation. The 17% wind-and-solar figure cannot be compared with the 24% renewable figure as if they used different definitions of the same category: wind and solar are only part of the renewable total.

EIA also reports that U.S. net electricity generation grew 2.8% in 2025 compared with 2024. Within that larger system, utility-scale solar generation rose 34%. These are year-over-year changes in output, not guarantees about the output of an individual solar plant or the long-term growth rate of the technology.
Generation and capacity answer different questions
Generation is electricity delivered over time
Generation is the amount of electricity a resource produces, usually reported in megawatt-hours or gigawatt-hours. A 41% generation share means natural gas plants supplied about 41% of the electricity counted in EIA’s 2025 utility-scale denominator. It does not mean gas plants ran at 41% of their maximum output every hour, nor that every gas plant had the same utilization pattern.
Capacity is the installed ability to produce
Capacity is rated in megawatts or gigawatts. EIA’s 40.0% figure means natural gas made up that share of utility-scale generating capability at the end of 2025. Capacity can sit unused for long periods, operate below its rating, or be unavailable for maintenance or other operational reasons. A capacity share therefore cannot be substituted for a generation share.

Gas capacity may be used as an intermediate resource, for peak demand, or as a reserve for changing system conditions. A gas plant that runs only during high-demand hours contributes to capacity but relatively little annual generation. Conversely, a resource with favorable availability can produce a large amount of annual electricity from a smaller capacity base. Comparing a technology fairly requires stating whether the question concerns installed equipment or energy delivered during a defined period.
“Renewables” is several resource types, not one operating profile
Wind
Wind turbines generate when wind conditions are within their operating range. Their output can vary by hour, season and location. A wind fleet’s annual production is therefore shaped by weather and by the geographic mix of projects, rather than by a schedule chosen solely by a grid operator.

Solar
Solar generation follows available sunlight, creating a daily pattern and seasonal variation. Utility-scale solar and small-scale systems are counted differently in EIA’s statistics, which is why the 17% utility-scale wind-and-solar share and the 19% total-net-generation share have different denominators. The 34% increase in utility-scale solar generation in 2025 describes output growth from one year to the next; it does not remove the technology’s daylight-dependent profile.
Hydropower
Hydropower is renewable, but its operating behavior is not identical to wind or solar. Water availability, reservoir conditions, environmental requirements and plant design affect when and how it generates. Treating every renewable megawatt as weather-dependent in the same way would obscure these differences.

Biomass and geothermal
Biomass and geothermal also belong to EIA’s renewable category. Their fuel or heat resource and plant design can allow operating patterns unlike those of wind and solar. A comparison that uses “renewables” as a single block should identify this broad definition before drawing conclusions about flexibility or availability.
How natural-gas plants serve the grid
Combined-cycle units
Many combined-cycle gas plants are used as intermediate resources. They can produce substantial energy and, within the limits of their design and operating state, adjust output as system conditions change. Their role is different from that of a plant built primarily to run only during a few high-demand hours.
Gas turbines and engines for peaks
Gas turbines and engines can also serve peak periods. These units may be valuable when demand is high or when another resource is temporarily producing less, even if their annual energy contribution is smaller than their installed capacity would suggest. “Natural gas” therefore covers multiple technologies with different start-up, ramping and utilization characteristics.

Dispatchable does not mean unlimited or instantaneous
A dispatchable unit is one whose output can generally be scheduled by an operator, subject to the unit’s technical limits, fuel arrangements, maintenance status and market or system instructions. Dispatchability is not a promise that a plant can start immediately, run indefinitely, or respond at the same speed as every other gas unit. The relevant question is which type of unit is available, how quickly it can change output and what the grid needs at that moment.
How operators combine variable and dispatchable resources
EIA describes the balancing task this way:
“To ensure a steady supply of electricity to consumers, operators of the electric power system, or grid, call on electric power plants to produce and supply the right amount of electricity to the grid at every moment to instantaneously meet and balance electricity demand.”
U.S. Energy Information Administration
That sentence explains why a national comparison cannot be reduced to “which source is on.” Operators manage the entire system. Wind and solar output enters the supply stack when weather conditions support it. Gas units and other dispatchable resources can be scheduled or adjusted within their operating limits. Hydropower, storage, imports, demand response and transmission can also affect the balance, depending on the region and the system’s available equipment.
When wind or solar output is low, the system does not automatically require one specific replacement technology. Operators use the resources that are available and economic under that system’s rules and constraints. Likewise, high wind or solar output does not make every other generator unnecessary: demand, transmission limits, plant availability and the timing of output still matter.
A practical comparison of gas and renewables
| Comparison question | Natural gas | Renewables | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| How much electricity did it supply in 2025? | About 41% of U.S. utility-scale generation | About 24% of U.S. utility-scale generation | Preliminary EIA data; renewable total includes five resource types |
| How much equipment was installed? | 40.0% of utility-scale capacity at year-end 2025 | One combined capacity share is not stated in the cited figures | Capacity is not annual generation |
| Can an operator schedule output? | Many combined-cycle plants and gas turbines or engines are dispatchable within technical limits | Wind and solar output depends on available weather; other renewable technologies differ | Do not assign one behavior to every unit in a category |
| What determines annual output? | Demand, dispatch decisions, fuel and plant availability, and operating economics | Resource availability, plant design, curtailment and grid conditions | The cited material does not establish a single utilization rate for either category |
| What emissions metric is available here? | Power-sector energy-related combustion CO₂ is included in EIA’s emissions discussion | The same power-sector CO₂ accounting applies to emitting generation; it is not a lifecycle comparison | EIA excludes other greenhouse gases and emissions from energy production and distribution in that report |
What the 2025 emissions data do—and do not—say
The reported change
EIA’s preliminary 2025 accounting shows U.S. electric-power-sector CO₂ emissions increased 4%, or 58 million metric tons. EIA attributes the increase to higher electricity generation and a larger coal share. In the same year, coal-fired generation increased 13%, while natural-gas-fired generation decreased 4%.

The scope of the metric
These figures concern energy-related carbon dioxide from the electric power sector within EIA’s stated accounting scope. EIA says the report does not include other greenhouse gases or emissions associated with the production, extraction or distribution of energy products. The numbers therefore should not be presented as lifecycle greenhouse-gas totals for gas, wind, solar or the renewable category.
Why a year-to-year increase is not a technology scorecard
A change in total power-sector CO₂ reflects the generation mix and the amount of electricity produced in that year. It does not, by itself, provide an emissions rate for every gas plant, a lifecycle estimate for a wind or solar project, or a regional comparison. The 2025 increase occurred alongside 2.8% growth in net generation and a 13% rise in coal generation, so the annual total reflects system-wide conditions rather than one resource acting in isolation.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Reliability questions require more than a generation share
Availability and controllability are different concepts
Wind and solar can be highly productive when their resources are available, but their output follows weather and the day-night cycle. Gas units can often be dispatched when needed, but each unit still has ramp limits, start-up requirements, outages and fuel constraints. A resource can contribute significant annual energy without being controllable in every hour, and a dispatchable resource can be important without producing a large share of annual energy.
The grid is regional, not one uniform machine
The United States has interconnected regional systems with different demand patterns, transmission networks, weather, plant fleets and operating rules. A national generation share is useful for describing the country as a whole, but it cannot establish how reliable a particular city, balancing area or project is. Claims about local adequacy or outage performance require regional data that are not supplied by the national figures above.
Why operators value a portfolio
Combining resources lets operators respond to changing conditions. Variable generation can supply energy when available; dispatchable plants and other flexibility can help cover changing demand or periods of lower variable output. The practical result is a portfolio problem: planners consider the timing of production, not just the nameplate megawatts or annual percentage.

What EIA’s future scenarios imply
EIA’s 2026 Annual Energy Outlook presents scenario analysis, not one guaranteed forecast. Its results change when assumptions about electricity demand, resource availability, fuel prices, technology costs and policy change. A scenario’s projected mix should therefore be labeled with the case and assumptions behind it.
Higher wind-and-solar cases
Cases with greater wind and solar generally require more total generating capacity. Their output varies across seasons and within each day, so the system needs enough capacity to serve demand when those resources are producing less. The additional capacity can include dispatchable resources and other forms of flexibility; the scenario result does not identify one universal technology requirement for every region.
Why no single “winner” follows from the outlook
A scenario with more renewable generation is not a finding that gas disappears, just as a scenario with substantial gas capacity is not proof that gas will supply the same annual share in every future. Demand growth, fuel prices, construction costs, technology performance and policy assumptions can move both capacity and generation outcomes. Observed 2025 data and modeled future cases answer different questions and should not be blended into one trend line.
How to evaluate a natural-gas-versus-renewables claim
- Identify the year and geography. Ask whether the number describes the United States, a region or a single plant, and keep the year attached to every percentage.
- Check the denominator. Determine whether the statistic covers utility-scale generation, total net generation, installed capacity or another measure. EIA’s 17% utility-scale wind-and-solar share and 19% total-net-generation share differ because small-scale solar is included in the latter.
- Define the resource category. “Renewables” includes hydropower, wind, solar, biomass and geothermal in the cited EIA total. “Natural gas” includes different plant technologies, not one uniform operating profile.
- Ask what role is being measured. Is the claim about annual energy, peak support, ramping, reserve capability or installed capacity? A single percentage cannot answer all of those questions.
- Name the emissions metric. Distinguish power-sector combustion CO₂ from lifecycle greenhouse-gas emissions. The cited 2025 EIA figure is the former within EIA’s stated scope.
- Separate observations from scenarios. Label 2025 statistics as preliminary observed data and identify the assumptions for any Annual Energy Outlook case.
- Look for the missing regional detail. National shares do not establish local reliability, prices, outage rates or transmission constraints. Those require separate regional evidence.
Bottom line for the U.S. power grid
Natural gas was the largest source of U.S. utility-scale electricity generation in preliminary 2025 data, at about 41%, while the broad renewable category supplied about 24%. Gas also represented 40.0% of installed utility-scale capacity at year-end, but that capacity figure is not an output figure. The technologies then play different, overlapping roles: many gas units can be scheduled or ramped within their limits, while wind and solar contribute according to available weather and other renewables follow their own resource conditions.
The useful comparison is therefore not “gas or renewables” as mutually exclusive choices. It is a comparison of annual energy, installed capability, controllability, resource availability and clearly defined emissions metrics within one interconnected system. Future shares remain scenario-dependent because demand, weather, fuel prices, technology costs and policy assumptions can all change the mix.
