Nasdaq futures were down 0.77% at 07:22 UTC on October 13, 2026, according to Reuters. That was a timestamped pre-market reading—not a live quote or the Nasdaq’s closing result—and it came as Asian chip stocks slid amid renewed questions about competition and the durability of AI-related profits.
What happened to Nasdaq futures?
Reuters reported Nasdaq futures down 0.77% at 07:22 UTC on October 13, alongside a 0.2% decline in European futures. Futures indicate trading expectations before the relevant cash-market session; they are not the same measure as the Nasdaq Composite’s eventual session result. The reported percentage describes Reuters’ observation at that time, not a current quote.
The move followed a sharp decline in Asian shares. Reuters said MSCI’s broadest Asia-Pacific share index outside Japan fell more than 2%, taking it to a more than two-month low. Chipmakers and companies exposed to the AI investment theme were among the day’s notable decliners.

Competition in memory chips was a reported trigger
Reuters linked the memory-stock selloff to reports of rapid progress by Chinese memory-chip maker ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT). The reports raised the prospect that Chinese firms could narrow the technology gap with established competitors. That was described as a trigger for the decline, not proof that one development alone caused the broader market move.

Investors were reassessing AI expectations
The broader concern was whether AI demand can keep growing fast enough to support exceptional earnings and margins as competition increases. Charu Chanana, chief investment strategist at Saxo, told Reuters: “The CXMT news appears to have been a clear trigger for the selloff in memory stocks, but I think the bigger story is that investors are becoming much less forgiving of the AI trade.” She also said investors were questioning “not just how much AI demand can grow, but how long today’s exceptional profits and margins can last as competition increases.”
Those concerns amount to a reassessment of expectations, not evidence that the long-term AI investment theme has ended. Nor does a decline in semiconductor shares establish that every company associated with AI is falling: exposure varies across chipmakers, infrastructure providers and software businesses.

How sharply did Asian chip shares fall?
Reuters’ October 13 account reported the following declines:
- Samsung: 8%.
- SK Hynix: 10%.
- Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC): 1.8%.
- Kioxia: 14%.
- SoftBank, an AI investor: 8%.
- South Korea’s Kospi: more than 6%.
The Associated Press published a separate observation of the Kospi on the same day: the index was down 5.5% at 6,035.35 after falling more than 7% intraday to below 6,000. In that AP account, Samsung Electronics was down 7.4% and SK Hynix was down 10.1%. These figures differ from Reuters’ report because they are separate reported observations; they should not be combined into a single price or percentage.

What does this mean for U.S. markets?
The October 13 futures decline came after a mixed U.S. session on October 12. The AP reported that the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.4%, while roughly 64% of S&P 500 companies rose. Several major technology shares, including Micron, AMD, Broadcom and Nvidia, declined. Those are cash-market results from the prior session, not the October 13 futures reading.
There was also recent but distinct weakness in another index: Nasdaq Dorsey Wright said the Nasdaq-100 fell 1.39% on October 9 amid concern about OpenAI revenue expectations and memory stocks. The Nasdaq-100 and Nasdaq Composite are different indexes, and neither figure is interchangeable with a futures quote.

AI-related shares do not necessarily move as one group. Nasdaq Global Indexes’ March 2026 analysis described uneven technology-sector performance, with some application software under pressure while some semiconductor and infrastructure-oriented companies were comparatively resilient. That earlier analysis provides general context; it does not establish how those groups performed on October 13.

How to read the different market figures
- Futures: A pre-market indicator tied to expectations for a later cash-market session. Reuters’ 0.77% figure is specifically its 07:22 UTC observation on October 13.
- Cash indexes: Measures such as the Nasdaq Composite and Kospi reflect their respective markets and observation times. A cash-index move is not a futures move.
- Individual stocks: A company’s decline can be larger or smaller than its national or regional index, depending on its exposure and trading.
- Reports and timestamps: Reuters and AP reported different declines for the Kospi and some stocks. Retain the source and observation context when citing those numbers rather than treating them as contradictory final results.
