Short answer: The S&P 500 is the broader core U.S. stock benchmark, with 500 leading companies across all major sectors and roughly 80% of available U.S. market capitalization. The Nasdaq-100 contains 100 large, non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market, giving it a stronger technology, innovation and growth tilt.

The Nasdaq-100 can outperform when large technology and growth companies lead, but that focus creates greater sensitivity to sector setbacks, valuation changes and interest rates. The S&P 500 is better diversified by company count and sector coverage, although it is still heavily influenced by mega-cap stocks. For a portfolio decision, compare the actual Nasdaq-100 or S&P 500 fund you can buy—not just the index name—because fees, tracking difference, taxes, liquidity and account availability affect results.

Nasdaq-100 vs. S&P 500 at a glance

These indexes are both U.S. large-cap equity benchmarks, but they answer different portfolio questions. The Nasdaq-100 is a targeted basket of large Nasdaq-listed non-financial companies. The S&P 500 is intended to represent a broad cross-section of leading U.S. industries.

Weighting Modified market-cap weighting with concentration caps Float-adjusted market-cap weighting
Rebalancing Quarterly rebalancing and an annual December reconstitution Quarterly rebalancing in March, June, September and December

The S&P 500’s nominal 500-company label can be confusing. Multiple share classes can create more securities than companies, which explains the 503 securities shown on the index page accessed in August 2026. That does not turn it into a 503-company index.

What the Nasdaq-100 actually owns

A large-cap, non-financial universe

Nasdaq defines the Nasdaq-100 as 100 of the largest non-financial companies listed on the Nasdaq Stock Market. Eligibility is based on the listing venue and company size, not on a promise that every constituent is a technology business. Consumer, healthcare, communication and other companies can qualify when they meet the index rules.

Financial companies are the important structural exclusion. Banks, insurers and other financial businesses that can be meaningful parts of a broad U.S. benchmark do not enter the Nasdaq-100 simply because they are large or listed on Nasdaq.

Modified market-cap weighting

The index uses market-cap-oriented weighting, so larger companies generally have larger weights. Nasdaq’s methodology also applies caps to individual securities and to groups of high-weight constituents. Those limits reduce the chance that one company or a small cluster completely dominates the index, but they do not remove mega-cap or sector risk.

How the rules changed in 2026

Nasdaq’s 2026 methodology update preserved the 100-company, non-financial objective while changing parts of constituent selection and low-float weighting. The changes became effective May 1, 2026. A fund following the index can therefore change its holdings or weights even when the fund name stays the same; the governing methodology and the fund’s implementation documents are the relevant references.

What the S&P 500 actually owns

Broad U.S. large-cap coverage

S&P Dow Jones Indices describes the S&P 500 as 500 leading companies covering approximately 80% of available market capitalization. It is designed to cover leading industries rather than a single exchange or theme. Its eligibility process considers sector balance, which allows financials and other sectors excluded from the Nasdaq-100 to contribute to returns.

Float-adjusted market-cap weighting

The S&P 500 weights companies according to their float-adjusted market value—the value of shares generally available to public investors. A company with a very large freely traded market value can therefore become a major index position even when the index contains hundreds of companies.

As of Aug. 31, 2026, the S&P 500 page reported that its 10 largest positions made up 37.8% of the index and that its largest constituent represented 8.1%. Those figures are a dated snapshot, not permanent limits. Share prices, corporate actions and index rebalancing can change them.

Which index is more diversified?

The S&P 500 is broader by count and sector

With 500 companies across all major U.S. industries, the S&P 500 spreads exposure more widely than the Nasdaq-100. It includes financials, energy, utilities, industrials, materials and real estate in addition to technology, communication services, consumer sectors and healthcare. That wider mix means a setback concentrated in one industry has less influence than it would in a narrower growth-heavy basket.

The Nasdaq-100 is targeted rather than random

The Nasdaq-100’s narrower design is intentional. It concentrates on very large Nasdaq-listed companies, with technology as the dominant exposure and consumer discretionary and healthcare also important. An investor who wants deliberate exposure to large growth and innovation businesses may prefer that focus to a broad-market allocation.

Neither index is fully diversified

Diversification is relative. The S&P 500 is diversified across U.S. large-cap companies, not across the entire global stock market. It does not provide a dedicated small-cap, international or emerging-market allocation. The Nasdaq-100 is even more concentrated by exchange, industry mix and company size.

Both indexes are market-cap oriented, so both are influenced by the biggest companies. Nasdaq reported that, at year-end 2025, Nasdaq-100 companies represented slightly more than half of the S&P 500’s total market capitalization, while the average Nasdaq-100 company was approximately three times as large as the average S&P 500 company. That illustrates why owning both indexes does not create two completely independent portfolios.

How much do the holdings overlap?

The same mega-cap businesses can be prominent in both indexes. The current S&P 500 holdings list includes Nvidia, Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Alphabet, Broadcom, Meta, Micron and Tesla. Many of the largest Nasdaq-100 positions are drawn from this same group of globally dominant companies.

Overlap matters more than the number of fund tickers in your account. A portfolio holding an S&P 500 fund, a Nasdaq-100 fund and several individual mega-cap technology stocks may have much more exposure to the same companies than its labels suggest.

A practical overlap check

  1. Download the latest holdings files for each fund, not just the index fact sheets.
  2. Sort each list by portfolio weight and identify repeated companies.
  3. Add the weights of repeated companies across your funds to estimate look-through exposure.
  4. Check sector weights as well as company names; two different companies can still increase the same technology or consumer-growth risk.
  5. Review the result after major index rebalances or large market moves because market-cap weights change continuously.

Is the Nasdaq-100 riskier than the S&P 500?

There is no single risk score that answers every investor’s question, but the Nasdaq-100 has a different risk mix. Its technology and growth tilt makes returns more dependent on a smaller set of industries and large companies. The S&P 500 has wider sector coverage, yet its own top holdings are concentrated enough to produce substantial drawdowns.

Sector risk

Technology averaged 61% of Nasdaq-100 weight in 2025, according to Nasdaq. When technology leadership is strong, that exposure can drive exceptional gains. When technology companies fall together, the same structure can magnify losses relative to a broader sector mix. The S&P 500’s inclusion of financials, energy, utilities, industrials and other sectors gives it more potential sources of return, although sector diversification cannot prevent a broad equity-market decline.

Growth valuation and interest-rate risk

Many companies that dominate the Nasdaq-100 are valued partly on expected future earnings and long-term growth. Changes in interest rates alter the discount applied to those future cash flows, so growth-oriented shares can react sharply when rate expectations change. This is an analytical consequence of the index’s composition, not a guarantee that the Nasdaq-100 will fall whenever rates rise.

Concentration risk

Nasdaq’s caps reduce single-stock dominance compared with an entirely unconstrained market-cap basket. They do not make the index equal-weighted, eliminate mega-cap exposure or prevent several high-weight companies from moving together.

The S&P 500’s 37.8% top-10 weight and 8.1% largest-constituent weight, measured Aug. 31, 2026, show that its broader company count does not equal evenly distributed risk. A few very large companies can still determine a large share of the index’s daily result.

Breadth and equity risk

The S&P 500 is still a U.S. large-cap equity index. Neither benchmark is a cash substitute, a capital guarantee or a complete portfolio by itself. Both can experience substantial drawdowns, including periods when diversification across companies does not protect against a market-wide recession or valuation shock.

What the 2025 performance tells you—and what it does not

Nasdaq reported a 21% Nasdaq-100 total return in 2025, three percentage points above the S&P 500. It also reported that technology averaged 61% of Nasdaq-100 weight and contributed 88% of the index’s 2025 return. Those numbers demonstrate how strongly one year’s result can depend on sector leadership.

They are not a forward-return forecast. A year in which technology leads can make the Nasdaq-100 look decisively better; a year in which growth valuations contract or leadership broadens can produce the opposite ranking. Use the 2025 figures to understand concentration and return drivers, not to assume the same spread will repeat.

Which is better for a core portfolio?

Choose an S&P 500 fund when breadth is the priority

  • You want one U.S. large-cap holding spanning all major sectors.
  • You want financials and other industries excluded from the Nasdaq-100.
  • You prefer to reduce, rather than deliberately increase, dependence on large technology and growth companies.
  • You are building a core allocation and will add separate international, small-cap or bond exposure elsewhere.

Choose a Nasdaq-100 fund when the tilt is intentional

  • You specifically want additional large-cap growth and innovation exposure.
  • You accept that technology and consumer-growth leadership can make results more volatile relative to a broad U.S. benchmark.
  • You have reviewed your existing holdings and are comfortable with repeated mega-cap positions.
  • You can stay invested through periods when growth stocks lag value, defensive or cyclical sectors.

Use both only with a reason

Combining the indexes can increase the growth tilt rather than meaningfully diversify it, because many of the largest companies overlap. A combination can be sensible when you deliberately want a broad U.S. core plus an extra Nasdaq-100 allocation. It is less useful when you assume two index labels automatically provide independent exposure.

How to compare an actual Nasdaq-100 ETF with an S&P 500 fund

The index is only the blueprint. Your investment experience comes from the fund that tracks it. Compare the specific prospectuses and current holdings for the products available in your country and account.

1. Identify the exact benchmark and share class

Confirm whether the fund tracks the Nasdaq-100, the S&P 500 or a different variant. Check whether it is an ETF or mutual fund, accumulating or distributing where relevant, and whether the share class is available in your account.

  • What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.

2. Compare ongoing costs and tracking difference

Look at the stated expense ratio, then examine historical tracking difference—the gap between the fund’s return and the index’s return after expenses and implementation effects. A low headline fee does not guarantee the smallest tracking gap.

3. Check liquidity and trading mechanics

For an ETF, review average trading volume, bid-ask spreads, creation and redemption arrangements and the time of day you can trade. A fund with a liquid market can be easier to buy or sell at a price close to its underlying value. Mutual-fund investors should check dealing cutoffs and settlement rules instead.

4. Review taxes for your jurisdiction and account

Tax treatment depends on where you live, the fund’s domicile, distributions, withholding rules and whether the account is taxable or tax-advantaged. Read the current prospectus and local tax guidance rather than assuming that two funds tracking different U.S. indexes receive identical treatment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Inspect holdings and rebalancing behavior

Check the latest portfolio date, the number of positions, security weights, cash policy, securities-lending disclosures and how closely the fund follows index changes. Nasdaq-100 changes can reflect quarterly rebalances, the annual December reconstitution and the 2026 methodology changes; the S&P 500 rebalances quarterly in March, June, September and December.

Common mistakes when comparing the indexes

Confusing the Nasdaq-100 with a pure technology index

Technology dominates the Nasdaq-100, but consumer discretionary, healthcare and other eligible industries are also present. Calling it a pure technology fund can lead you to underestimate non-technology exposure while still understating how concentrated the overall sector profile is.

Assuming 500 companies means low concentration

The S&P 500’s top 10 represented 37.8% of the index as of Aug. 31, 2026. Company count is only one measure of diversification; weighting and sector relationships matter too.

Comparing index returns without matching the investment product

Index total returns and fund returns are not interchangeable. Fees, tracking difference, cash balances, trading costs, tax treatment and currency effects can change what an investor actually receives.

Using a single year to choose a permanent winner

The Nasdaq-100’s 21% total return in 2025 and its three-point lead over the S&P 500 capture one market environment. They do not establish which index will lead over your investment horizon.

A decision checklist

  • Purpose: Is this your broad U.S. core or a deliberate growth satellite?
  • Exposure: How much technology and mega-cap stock exposure do you already own?
  • Diversification: Do you need financials, energy, utilities, industrials and other sectors?
  • Risk capacity: Could you continue holding through a large decline in growth stocks?
  • Implementation: Which available fund has acceptable fees, tracking, liquidity and tax treatment?
  • Review rule: When will you rebalance, and what change in your portfolio would make you reduce an unintended sector concentration?

Bottom line for the choice

The S&P 500 is the stronger default when you want broad U.S. large-cap exposure across sectors. The Nasdaq-100 is the more focused choice when you intentionally want a heavier allocation to large Nasdaq-listed growth and technology-oriented companies and can accept greater concentration in that theme. Neither is automatically superior: the right choice depends on the role in your portfolio, your existing overlap and the specific fund’s costs, tracking quality, taxes and access.
