If your primary objective is direct exposure to the companies building and supplying artificial-intelligence infrastructure and software, the Nasdaq-100 is the closer fit. Nasdaq Global Indexes reported that technology made up 63% of the Nasdaq-100 on December 31, 2025, compared with 41% of the S&P 500. The S&P 500 is the better fit when you want broader U.S. large-cap diversification, including a meaningful financials allocation and more exposure to industries outside technology.

This is a portfolio-fit conclusion, not a prediction of which index will outperform. A technology-heavy index can benefit more when semiconductor, cloud and software earnings accelerate, but it can also react more sharply to valuation changes, regulation and industry downturns. Both indexes own many of the same mega-cap companies, so the choice is mainly about the degree of AI and technology concentration rather than an all-or-nothing choice between “AI” and “no AI.”

What the two indexes actually represent

Nasdaq-100

The Nasdaq-100 tracks 100 of the largest companies listed on the Nasdaq exchange, excluding financial companies. Its selection universe therefore combines an exchange-listing requirement with a non-financial rule. The result is a portfolio tilted toward technology, communications and consumer-oriented growth businesses, with no financials allocation under the December 31, 2025 sector breakdown.

S&P 500

The S&P 500 is designed to measure the U.S. large-cap segment. It is not limited to one exchange and it includes financial companies alongside technology, health care, industrial, consumer, energy, utility, real-estate and communication businesses. Its broader sector universe gives it a more balanced exposure to the U.S. large-cap market.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Because the indexes start with different universes, their names should not be treated as interchangeable labels for “large U.S. stocks.” The Nasdaq-100 is large-cap exposure filtered by Nasdaq listing and financial exclusion; the S&P 500 is a broad large-cap benchmark across the U.S. equity market.

Which index has more AI exposure?

For a reader seeking a higher concentration in companies that develop, manufacture or supply AI systems, the Nasdaq-100 offers the more direct index-level exposure. The clearest dated evidence is the sector mix below.

Measure Nasdaq-100 S&P 500 Date and source context
Technology weight 63% 41% December 31, 2025; Nasdaq Global Indexes
Consumer-discretionary weight 18% 14% December 31, 2025; Nasdaq Global Indexes
Financials weight 0% 11% December 31, 2025; Nasdaq Global Indexes

Technology weight is not a perfect AI measure. It includes businesses whose revenues may come from software, hardware, semiconductors, information services or other activities that are not exclusively AI. Conversely, AI beneficiaries can sit in other sectors. Still, a 63% technology allocation gives the Nasdaq-100 a substantially larger structural connection to the hardware, cloud-computing and software ecosystem than the 41% allocation in the S&P 500.

Why the S&P 500 still provides meaningful AI exposure

Choosing the S&P 500 does not mean avoiding AI. The index owns many of the same large technology and communications companies that drive AI infrastructure and applications. It also owns suppliers and adopters of AI across industries. What changes is position size and the amount of the portfolio devoted to non-technology businesses.

An S&P 500 investor receives AI exposure as one component of a broad U.S. large-cap allocation. A Nasdaq-100 investor makes that component larger and accepts a narrower sector mix in exchange.

Concentration: the decision is about degree, not a binary switch

The indexes overlap through mega-cap holdings. The largest companies can therefore influence both benchmarks, even though their sector weights differ. This overlap means moving from the S&P 500 to the Nasdaq-100 generally increases the concentration of an existing position in major technology and growth companies; it does not create an entirely new collection of unrelated AI stocks.

What higher concentration can amplify

  • Semiconductor cycles: spending on accelerators, memory and networking equipment can rise and fall quickly with data-center demand.
  • Cloud and software budgets: enterprise adoption may be strong over the long term but uneven from quarter to quarter.
  • Valuation changes: companies priced for rapid growth can lose value when interest rates or expected growth rates change.
  • Regulation and policy: export controls, antitrust actions, privacy rules and AI-safety requirements can affect technology companies differently from banks, health-care firms or industrials.
  • Company-specific execution: a small number of very large constituents can move an index when earnings, product launches or capital spending plans change.

The S&P 500 spreads more of these risks across financials and other industries. That diversification can reduce the effect of a single technology theme, although it cannot eliminate equity-market losses.

Risk evidence: volatility and correlation

Nasdaq Global Indexes reported that the Nasdaq-100’s average one-year rolling volatility was 2.9 percentage points higher than the S&P 500’s over the period from December 31, 2007, through December 31, 2025. The same analysis reported a 93% correlation in daily returns.

Those figures answer two different questions. The higher rolling volatility indicates that the Nasdaq-100 has historically experienced larger fluctuations over the measured period. The 93% daily-return correlation shows that the indexes have still moved in the same direction most of the time. Adding the Nasdaq-100 to an S&P 500 holding may therefore change the size of technology exposure more than it changes broad U.S. equity-market behavior.

Historical volatility is not a guarantee of future risk. The period includes multiple market regimes, and the result can change with valuation levels, constituent weights and the economic cycle. Treat the figures as context for the trade-off, not as a forecast or a promised risk premium.

Methodology and date sensitivity

Index composition is not static. Nasdaq’s methodology change became effective May 1, 2026. The update added an expedited fast-entry process and revised float and weighting rules. Those changes can affect which companies enter the index, how quickly they enter and how their investable market value influences position sizes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Any current comparison should therefore carry an “as of” date for sector weights, constituents and concentration statistics. A table published with December 31, 2025 weights remains accurate for that date, but it should not be presented as a timeless description of the index. The S&P 500 also changes as its provider updates the benchmark, so its current holdings and weights require their own date stamp.

How rebalancing affects an investor

  • Entry and removal: companies can be added or deleted as eligibility and size conditions change.
  • Weight changes: float-adjusted market value and index rules can raise or lower a constituent’s influence without a company issuing new shares.
  • Fast entry: the Nasdaq-100’s expedited process can bring a qualifying large Nasdaq-listed company into the index sooner than a traditional review schedule would.
  • Turnover and taxes: an index fund may trade to follow these changes, while investors in a taxable account remain responsible for the tax consequences of selling fund shares.

Before acting on a recent headline about an “AI stock joining the index,” check the effective date, the index methodology and the fund’s actual implementation. A constituent change does not automatically make an index a pure AI strategy.

Is QQQ more exposed to AI than SPY?

QQQ is a familiar exchange-traded implementation of the Nasdaq-100, while SPY is a documented implementation of the S&P 500. Because the underlying indexes have the sector allocations above, QQQ generally gives an investor more concentrated technology and AI-related exposure than SPY.

That comparison is about index exposure, not a claim that one fund is always the better purchase. Before choosing either vehicle, examine the fund’s current holdings, expense ratio, bid-ask spread, tracking difference, securities-lending policy, distribution history and tax treatment. These details can change, and they can make two funds that follow similar benchmarks produce different after-tax outcomes.

Questions to answer before buying an ETF

  1. Confirm the benchmark: read the fund’s current prospectus and verify whether it tracks the Nasdaq-100 or the S&P 500.
  2. Check the date of the holdings: compare the fund’s published portfolio date with the index data you are using.
  3. Compare ongoing costs: review the current expense ratio and any trading costs rather than relying on an old fee figure.
  4. Consider account taxes: determine how dividends, capital-gain distributions and eventual sales are taxed in your jurisdiction and account type.
  5. Assess concentration: look at the largest positions and sector weights, not just the fund name.
  6. Match the risk to your time horizon: a higher-volatility allocation can be difficult to hold through a drawdown if the money is needed soon.

QQQ and SPY are examples for understanding implementation. They are not personalized recommendations, and an investor can use other funds or direct holdings depending on costs, access and tax circumstances.

Which index is better for long-term investing?

There is no universal winner because “long term” describes a holding period, not an objective. The relevant question is whether your long-term plan calls for a concentrated technology tilt or a broad U.S. large-cap core.

Choose the Nasdaq-100 when these priorities dominate

  • You intentionally want technology to represent a large share of the equity allocation.
  • You accept larger fluctuations in exchange for more direct participation in AI infrastructure and software growth.
  • Your overall portfolio already contains defensive, value, international or financial exposure elsewhere.
  • You can tolerate periods when technology valuations or semiconductor demand fall out of favor.

Choose the S&P 500 when these priorities dominate

  • You want one broad U.S. large-cap holding rather than a sector-heavy tilt.
  • You value financials and industries outside technology as portfolio diversifiers.
  • You prefer to receive AI exposure without making it the central investment thesis.
  • You want a core allocation that may be easier to combine with separate international or small-cap funds.

Use both only with a deliberate reason

Holding both indexes can provide a broad core plus an intentional technology tilt, but the overlap is substantial. Adding the Nasdaq-100 to an S&P 500 position does not diversify every risk; it usually increases the weight of shared mega-cap technology companies. Calculate the combined portfolio’s largest positions and sector exposures before assuming that two ticker symbols equal two independent sources of diversification.

Does the S&P 500 already have enough AI stocks?

“Enough” depends on the role you want AI to play. The S&P 500 already includes major AI beneficiaries and companies adopting AI to improve products or operations. Its 41% technology weight on December 31, 2025 demonstrates that technology is a major part of the benchmark, even with financials and other sectors included.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If your goal is broad participation while limiting dependence on one theme, that may be enough. If your goal is to make AI-related growth a dominant exposure, the S&P 500 may feel too diluted by financials, health care, industrials, energy, utilities, real estate and other sectors. The Nasdaq-100 raises the technology allocation but does not isolate AI revenue, because many constituents have substantial non-AI businesses.

Which index is more diversified and less risky?

The S&P 500 is more diversified across sectors because it includes financials and a wider range of U.S. large-cap industries. On the historical measure cited above, the Nasdaq-100 had average one-year rolling volatility 2.9 percentage points higher. Those facts support describing the S&P 500 as the broader and historically less volatile of the two over that period.

Diversification does not mean safety. The S&P 500 remains an equity index concentrated in large U.S. companies, and its mega-cap holdings can still dominate performance. It can decline sharply during a broad market selloff. Likewise, the Nasdaq-100’s 93% correlation with the S&P 500 means that its higher concentration does not make it an independent hedge against U.S. stock-market risk.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the job of the holding. Write down whether it is a broad U.S. core, an AI and technology tilt or a satellite position around another core.
  2. Set a concentration limit. Decide how much technology and how much exposure to the largest companies you can hold through a downturn.
  3. Map existing positions. Include workplace plans, individual stocks and other funds; overlapping mega-cap holdings can make the effective Nasdaq-100 exposure larger than it appears.
  4. Choose the benchmark. Select the Nasdaq-100 for the higher technology tilt or the S&P 500 for broader sector coverage, based on the objective rather than recent returns.
  5. Evaluate the implementation. Compare current fees, spreads, tracking quality, distributions, tax treatment and account availability for the ETF or fund you can actually buy.
  6. Set a review rule. Recheck weights and methodology after major index changes, such as the Nasdaq-100 rules effective May 1, 2026, and rebalance only according to your written plan.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating sector weight as an AI revenue percentage

A 63% technology weight does not mean 63% of Nasdaq-100 revenue comes from AI. Sector classification is a broad proxy. Read company filings or a fund’s methodology if you need a narrower definition of AI exposure.

Using undated statistics

Weights, constituents and concentration can change. Label the December 31, 2025 figures and update them when publishing a new version, especially after methodology changes.

Assuming two indexes eliminate overlap

The 93% daily-return correlation and shared mega-cap holdings show why combining both benchmarks may increase concentration instead of providing equal amounts of independent diversification.

Ignoring the fund wrapper

Index choice is only the first layer. Fees, spreads, tracking difference, distributions and taxes can materially affect what an investor keeps.

Projecting past volatility into the future

The 2.9-percentage-point volatility gap describes a defined historical period. It is evidence of a past difference, not a guaranteed future spread.

Bottom line for different readers

  • AI-focused investor: Start with the Nasdaq-100 if you deliberately want a larger technology and AI-related allocation and can accept higher concentration.
  • Core portfolio investor: Start with the S&P 500 if broad U.S. large-cap diversification, including financials, matters more than maximizing technology weight.
  • Existing S&P 500 holder: You already own substantial AI exposure; adding Nasdaq-100 exposure is a decision to increase the tilt, not to add an entirely separate theme.
  • Investor comparing QQQ and SPY: Compare their current holdings, costs and tax consequences after deciding which underlying index fits your objective.

As of the December 31, 2025 sector data, the Nasdaq-100 is the more direct choice for AI exposure, while the S&P 500 is the more diversified choice. Review current index and fund data before investing because the Nasdaq-100 methodology effective May 1, 2026, and ordinary rebalancing can change the exposure you are buying.
