NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope has mapped changing layers of clouds, temperatures and carbon chemistry on SIMP 0136, a free-floating planetary-mass object about 20 light-years (6 parsecs) from Earth in Pisces. The object is roughly 13 times Jupiter’s mass and spins once every 2.4 hours. Webb did not photograph surface storms; it measured the object’s own changing infrared glow as different atmospheric regions rotated into view.
What is SIMP 0136?
SIMP 0136 is formally designated SIMP J013656.5+093347. It does not orbit a star, so it is not a conventional exoplanet. NASA describes it as a free-floating planetary-mass object that may instead be a brown dwarf, an object formed like a star but too small to sustain normal hydrogen fusion. At an estimated age of about 200 million years, it is young in astronomical terms, but its classification remains important: there is no host star whose light could illuminate or contaminate the observations.
That isolation makes SIMP 0136 unusually useful for atmospheric science. Webb can observe infrared radiation produced by the object itself rather than trying to separate a planet’s faint signal from a much brighter sun.

How Webb measured weather without a sun
Webb used time-series infrared spectroscopy: repeatedly recording the spectrum while the object rotated. Its 2.4-hour spin brings regions with different clouds and temperatures into view, causing measurable changes in brightness and in the shape of the spectrum.

- Repeated sampling: NIRSpec collected 5,726 spectra on July 23, 2023, taking one spectrum every 1.8 seconds for roughly three hours.
- Multiple rotations: NIRSpec and MIRI monitored a broad infrared range over two rotations, allowing researchers to distinguish repeating rotational patterns from evolving atmospheric features.
- Depth-sensitive wavelengths: Different infrared wavelength groups emerge from different pressures, so their light curves probe separate atmospheric levels rather than one average cloud deck.
- Variability analysis: Researchers compared the changing spectra and used a 2026 principal-component analysis to identify which physical changes explain most of the signal.
Because SIMP 0136 is unresolved, these measurements are light curves and spectra, not a resolved map or a direct photograph. NASA explicitly says Webb has not captured a direct image of the object.
Three atmospheric levels reveal different clouds
The observations show that SIMP 0136’s atmosphere changes differently with altitude and longitude. Representative pressures associated with the illustrated wavelength groups are:

The different light-curve shapes at these levels rule out a single, uniform cloud layer. Cloud patches change with longitude, while their patterns also evolve over time. In other words, the atmosphere is vertically structured and dynamic: a feature visible in a deeper iron-cloud layer may not have the same size, timing or brightness contrast in the higher silicate layer.
What kind of weather is on this world?
Patchy iron and silicate clouds
The data support multiple cloud decks rather than one continuous overcast. Deeper clouds contain iron particles, and higher clouds contain silicate grains. As SIMP 0136 spins, these patches rotate in and out of view and can change during the observation. “We already knew that it varies in brightness, and we were confident that there are patchy cloud layers that rotate in and out of view and evolve over time,” said Allison McCarthy of Boston University, lead author of the study, in a NASA statement dated March 3, 2025.

Temperature differences above the clouds
Brightness changes at roughly 0.1 bar trace temperature variations at high altitude. Some may be hot spots. NASA says possible explanations include auroral activity detected at radio wavelengths or hot gas rising from deeper layers. Those connections remain under investigation; the observations establish changing temperatures, not a definitive cause for every high-altitude feature.
Changing carbon chemistry
The spectrum also changes as carbon-bearing chemistry varies across the rotating object. Different sides therefore differ not only in cloud coverage and temperature but also in the chemical signatures that infrared spectroscopy detects.

What the 2026 analysis adds
A principal-component analysis published in 2026 found that temperature changes and vertical cloud structure account for most of the measured variability. This result helps separate the dominant atmospheric processes from smaller or still-uncertain contributors, such as possible auroral heating. It does not turn the object into a weather map with identified winds or storms; it identifies which kinds of atmospheric change best explain the observed spectra.

The comparison is why SIMP 0136 matters beyond this single object. Its clean, star-free signal provides a test case for interpreting atmospheres of directly imaged giant planets, where scientists also study an object’s own faint infrared emission.

What Webb did—and did not—discover
- It did discover: distinct variability at different atmospheric depths, evolving patchy cloud layers, high-altitude temperature differences, and changing carbon chemistry.
- It did not produce: a conventional photograph, a resolved view of storms, a direct measurement of rainfall or wind speed, or a final ruling on whether SIMP 0136 is a planet or brown dwarf.
- “Weather” means: changing atmospheric brightness, temperature, cloud structure and chemistry observed over rotation, not a terrestrial-style forecast.
Why the result matters for future astronomy
Atmospheric models must explain how clouds at different pressures evolve together—or fail to do so—and how temperature and chemistry change across a rapidly rotating body. SIMP 0136 gives researchers a nearby laboratory with no host-star glare. Better models built from it can improve the interpretation of directly imaged giant planets and help future missions decide which wavelengths and observing cadences are most informative.
