NASA’s planned SkyFall mission would send three autonomous, instrument-carrying helicopters to Mars in 2028 aboard the proposed SR-1 Freedom nuclear-powered interplanetary spacecraft. Released directly into the atmosphere rather than carried by a rover, the aircraft are designed to survey separated sites, map shallow buried ice and study terrain that ground vehicles may struggle to reach.
What NASA’s SkyFall mission is
SkyFall is planned as the first Mars mission built around a team of three science helicopters rather than a single flight demonstrator. Space.com reported the 2028 launch plan on October 15, 2026, while AeroVironment’s August 27, 2026 contract announcement described a path toward a late-2028 launch aboard the planned SR-1 Freedom spacecraft. The launch date, spacecraft and landing site remain plans, not completed mission milestones.
The project builds on NASA’s Ingenuity helicopter, which completed 72 flights at Jezero Crater. Ingenuity proved that powered flight is possible in Mars’ thin atmosphere; SkyFall is intended to turn that capability into a repeatable, multi-aircraft science platform with substantial onboard instruments.

A rover must drive around steep slopes, loose ground, rocks and other hazards. It also spends time covering every metre between science targets. A helicopter can cross those obstacles, leave its landing area and move between separated regions of interest. That does not make flight risk-free, but it changes the geography scientists can consider.

Will Pomerantz, AeroVironment’s head of Space Ventures, said Mars helicopters “can cover distance quickly and can go places that might be impossible to reach by ground.” He described the three aircraft as a way to “show us parts of Mars we’ve never seen before and return mountains of data for scientists to pore over.” Those are program expectations and an executive’s characterization, not an independently measured comparison with a rover.
How three helicopters will land without a rover
Ingenuity reached Mars attached to NASA’s Perseverance rover. SkyFall is designed to avoid both a host rover and a separate, single-use lander stage through a deployment sequence called the “SkyFall maneuver.”
- Atmospheric release: The carrier spacecraft releases all three helicopters directly into the Martian atmosphere.
- Vehicle separation: The aircraft separate from the carrier and establish their own flight configuration.
- Rotor deployment: Each helicopter deploys its rotors and prepares its autonomous flight systems.
- Powered descent: The aircraft descend under their own power rather than parachuting onto a rover or lander.
- Independent landing: Each helicopter navigates to the surface and lands as its own spacecraft.
AeroVironment and NASA/JPL present direct release as a way to reduce technical and financial complexity. That is a program claim; no independent audit has established a quantified reduction in risk or cost. It also means every aircraft must complete its own separation, descent, navigation and landing sequence.

What the helicopters will measure
Shallow subsurface structure and buried ice
Each aircraft’s nominal payload includes five science instruments plus engineering navigation cameras. A JPL-designed ground-penetrating radar is intended to detect shallow rock layers and buried ice at a local scale that orbital radar cannot resolve. Local radar profiles could connect what is visible at the surface with structures just below it.
Surface geology and landforms
The instrument package is designed to examine surface geology and geomorphology across multiple sites. Flying between separated terrains would let scientists compare landforms that a single ground traverse might not reach efficiently, although the final route and targets have not been selected.
Weather and radiation
Other instruments address atmospheric meteorology and radiation conditions. The helicopters’ engineering cameras also support navigation and provide visual context for the science measurements.

“Balloon Mode” wind observations
In a proposed “Balloon Mode,” a helicopter could stop trying to hold a fixed position and drift with the background wind. That motion would turn the aircraft into a local wind sensor without requiring a separate dedicated wind instrument. It is a proposed operating mode, not a guaranteed mission measurement.

Could SkyFall find accessible water ice?
Finding near-surface water ice is one of the mission’s central science goals. Ice preserves a record of past Martian climate, and deposits close enough to the surface could eventually support human missions as a source of water. Subsurface ice is also considered a high-priority environment for studying past habitability.
The radar can identify shallow layers and buried ice, but the available mission descriptions do not provide a probability that SkyFall will find ice, a minimum deposit size or a guarantee that any detected ice would be practical for astronauts to extract. The sources also do not establish that the mission will detect life. A radar detection would show structure and composition clues, not biological activity by itself.

Planned range, lifetime and landing-site process
SkyFall Project Scientist Matthew Golombek of JPL said the design target is roughly 1–2 kilometres of flight every other sol (a Martian day). If that pace can be sustained, total traverses could reach approximately 200–300 kilometres, or about 125 to slightly more than 185 miles. Those figures depend on terrain, available energy, atmospheric conditions and mission operations.

The design-reference landing region targets glacial or periglacial terrain with subsurface water ice. NASA’s Mars Exploration Program and SkyFall teams plan an initial landing-site workshop in early 2027 and a second in late 2027. A final site will be chosen only after science and engineering constraints are evaluated, so neither the landing coordinates nor the detailed flight routes are established.

Who is building SkyFall
AeroVironment is assigned responsibility for the rotor systems, airframes, structures, avionics integration and accommodation of the science payloads. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory leads the power system, electronics, algorithms and software and supplies the ground-penetrating radar.

Jeff Rodrian, head of AeroVironment’s MacCready Works, characterized the approach as taking the company’s high-volume uncrewed-systems mindset into planetary exploration and making Mars helicopters a repeatable product line rather than a one-off delivery. That statement describes the intended manufacturing philosophy; it is not an independently verified production forecast.
What is still unknown
- The final launch date and whether the SR-1 Freedom mission proceeds on the planned 2028 schedule.
- The landing site, which depends on the 2027 workshops and subsequent engineering review.
- Each helicopter’s final route, flight count and achieved traverse distance.
- The amount, depth and accessibility of any ice the radar may detect.
- The mission’s final cost and the probability of finding ice; no independent published figures establish either.
SkyFall’s significance is therefore a capability and access promise: three aircraft could sample disconnected Martian landscapes and inspect shallow subsurface layers without relying on a rover to carry them. Whether that promise becomes a larger scientific haul than a rover mission will depend on the final site, launch, landing sequence and years of surface operations.
