NASA’s Perseverance Mars rover became the vehicle with the greatest cumulative driving distance on another world on October 11, 2026, reaching 45.22 kilometers (28.10 miles). It passed the previous record, held by NASA’s Opportunity rover, by driving a 91.31-meter (299.6-foot) leg. The total is an odometer-like accumulation over the mission—not one continuous trip—and the record holder is a six-wheeled robotic science rover, not a road car.
What record did Perseverance break?
NASA announced on October 12, 2026, that Perseverance had reached 45.22 km (28.10 miles) of cumulative driving on Mars the previous day. That surpassed Opportunity’s prior Mars total of 45.16 km (28.06 miles), according to NASA’s record announcement.
The milestone came on a 91.31-meter (299.6-foot) drive. That leg pushed Perseverance’s accumulated distance beyond Opportunity’s; it was not itself the full record distance. NASA describes the comparison as distance driven by a vehicle on the surface of another world. Calling Perseverance a “car” is colloquial: it is a robotic rover designed to explore Mars and conduct science.
How does Perseverance compare with Opportunity?
| Rover | Cumulative distance in NASA’s 2026 comparison | Time to accumulate the distance | Mission context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Perseverance | 45.22 km (28.10 miles), reached October 11, 2026 | About 5½ years | Six-wheeled robotic Mars science rover |
| Opportunity | 45.16 km (28.06 miles) | Almost 15 years | NASA Mars rover; held the Mars driving record before Perseverance |
The approximate time comparison comes from NASA’s Perseverance mission page. It illustrates how much faster Perseverance accumulated a comparable distance, but it does not mean the two missions had identical routes or operating conditions.

Why can Perseverance cover so much ground?
Perseverance can use autonomous navigation, or AutoNav, to help plan and execute drives around hazards. NASA reports that the rover has driven as far as 412 meters (1,351 feet) in a single sol—a Martian day—and that more than 90% of its total distance has been driven using AutoNav. Those are NASA-reported mission figures, not a claim that every drive is autonomous or that the rover travels at a constant pace.
The distance matters scientifically because longer drives bring a wider range of terrain within reach. NASA says Perseverance’s stamina and longer drives have enabled the team to examine more geologically diverse locations and investigate outcrops and rocks more quickly. The rover’s mileage is therefore a measure of exploration capability as well as a record.

“It is an honor to be working on Perseverance at a moment when the technology has evolved to the point that drives like these are routine,” said Steven Lee, project manager of the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, in the October 12 announcement.

Perseverance’s Mars total is longer than the lunar driving figures NASA cites, though the Apollo 17 total differs slightly between NASA sources. NASA’s 2026 Perseverance announcement gives Apollo 17’s crewed Lunar Roving Vehicle 35.7 km (22.2 miles) and the Soviet Lunokhod 2 rover 39 km (24.2 miles). NASA Goddard’s Apollo Lunar Roving Vehicle reference lists Apollo 17 at 35.9 km over 4 hours 26 minutes of total driving time.

Those published Apollo figures should be kept tied to their sources rather than treated as a single exact value: NASA reports 35.7 km in its 2026 comparison and 35.9 km on the Goddard page. The Goddard reference also lists a 20.1 km longest traverse and a greatest distance of 7.6 km from the Lunar Module. These measurements describe a crewed lunar vehicle’s expedition, while Perseverance’s record is a robotic rover’s cumulative mission driving distance.
Distance figures are not necessarily interchangeable measurements across all vehicles. NASA’s Apollo 17 Mission Report defines traverse odometer distance as the distance actually driven from the traverse starting point to the endpoint. The Goddard reference explains that Apollo’s rover used a directional gyro and odometer, with data sent to a computer that tracked overall direction and distance back to the Lunar Module. The available sources do not establish one measurement protocol applied identically to every vehicle in the cross-world comparison.

How did Opportunity’s record develop?
Opportunity’s place in this record has changed over time. In May 2013, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported that Opportunity had passed Apollo 17’s 35.744 km total, as described in its historical account. That report documents an earlier milestone; it predates Opportunity’s eventual 45.16 km total and does not describe the current record holder.
