NASA’s Perseverance rover set a new record for cumulative driving distance on another world when its odometer reached 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers) on Oct. 11, 2026. That edged past the 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers) driven by NASA’s Opportunity rover. The milestone came on Perseverance’s 2,006th Martian day, or sol, and is not a record for the longest drive in a single sol.
What record did Perseverance set?
NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) reported the milestone on Oct. 12, 2026, based on the rover’s odometer reading the day before. Perseverance’s 28.10 miles surpassed Opportunity’s previous record of 28.06 miles for cumulative distance driven by a vehicle on another world. The difference is 0.04 mile, or about 211 feet (64 meters). NASA JPL’s Oct. 12, 2026 announcement identifies Perseverance as having driven farther than any vehicle on another world.
Perseverance reached the mark after about five and a half years on Mars. The milestone is a total accumulated across many drives, not a single uninterrupted trip.

A sol is one Martian day. Perseverance’s 2026 milestone measures cumulative distance over its mission; it does not mean the rover drove 28 miles in one day or broke its single-sol record during this event.

| Record category | Distance | When and what it means |
|---|---|---|
| Cumulative distance on another world | 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers) | Perseverance’s odometer on Oct. 11, 2026, surpassing Opportunity’s 28.06 miles (45.16 kilometers); reported by NASA JPL. |
| Longest single-sol drive | 1,350.7 feet (411.7 meters) | Perseverance’s previously reported one-sol record, driven June 19, 2025; a separate category from cumulative distance, according to NASA’s 2025 report. |
JPL says Perseverance can cover as much as 1,351 feet (412 meters) in a sol. That capability describes a maximum daily distance, not the total-mileage record.
How does Perseverance drive autonomously?
AutoNav helps Perseverance cover terrain without requiring Earth-based planners to specify every wheel movement. The rover takes images as it moves, builds a three-dimensional map of nearby hazards, and selects a route between waypoints chosen by human planners on Earth. JPL says more than 90% of Perseverance’s cumulative distance was driven with AutoNav evaluating terrain.

The rover is not wholly unsupervised: planners still set daily activities and route boundaries. NASA’s account of the 2025 single-sol record describes Enhanced Autonomous Navigation (ENav) as assessing hazards up to 50 feet (15 meters) ahead and choosing a way around obstacles. Planners designate “keep-in” and “keep-out” areas to define where the rover may travel. NASA’s explanation of ENav and the 2025 drive details that division of work.
Lighting can also limit when the rover drives. Mark Maimone, deputy team chief for robotic operations on Perseverance, said: “Glare in the navigation cameras is why we park by mid-afternoon if we’re driving toward the Sun, and if we can teach the rover to see past those artifacts, every rover that follows gets a longer working day.”

Why does the extra range matter to Perseverance’s science?
More driving range can bring a wider variety of terrain within reach sooner. JPL says longer drives let the team examine more outcrops and use their rocks to investigate more of Mars’ history. This increases access to science targets; the distance record alone does not establish a particular scientific discovery.
By the time it set the record, Perseverance had traveled from an ancient lakebed up a fossilized river system and was investigating the Lac de Charmes region on its way toward the crater rim. Its planned route toward Idubi is intended to reach terrain where scientists hope to find traces of ancient hydrothermal systems.

The record followed an earlier distance milestone: NASA Science documented Perseverance reaching a marathon distance of 26.2 miles (42.195 kilometers) on sol 1,890. NASA Science reported that Opportunity took 11 years and two months to reach that same marathon distance, while Perseverance did it in five years and four months. That comparison supplies context for Perseverance’s pace to the marathon mark; the new record is the later cumulative total. NASA Science’s June 24, 2026 photojournal entry documents the milestone.

JPL reported that Perseverance’s first mission extension had been approved, beginning in October 2026 and carrying crater-rim exploration through roughly the end of 2028. The rover’s mobility systems were reported operational, and JPL cited favorable results from extended-ground-life testing. The 2028 horizon is a mission plan, not a guarantee that the rover will remain operational until then.
Steven Lee, project manager of the Curiosity and Perseverance rovers at JPL, said: “It is an honor to be working on Perseverance at a moment when the technology has evolved to the point that drives like these are routine,”
Mark Maimone, deputy team chief for robotic operations on Perseverance, said of the record: “The rover that broke this record did so by making its own decisions about the path. Given the autonomy to just go, Perseverance is a better driver than the one that landed, and we’re not done,”
