The “strange reversal” is a solar-wind magnetic switchback—a brief, sharp bend in the Sun’s magnetic field that can turn the field almost directly back toward the Sun. NASA’s Parker Solar Probe found these structures repeatedly close to the Sun, where they last from a few seconds to several minutes and are far more distinct than they appear near Earth.
Switchbacks are important because they may carry enough Alfvén-wave energy to help heat and accelerate the solar wind. Their exact origin remains unsettled: competing explanations involve magnetic reconnection in the corona, turbulence in the expanding wind, velocity shear between fast and slow streams, or a combination of those processes.
What Parker Solar Probe actually detected
Parker’s FIELDS instrument measured rapid reversals in the magnetic field embedded in the solar wind. NASA calls each event a magnetic switchback: the field briefly whips around from its usual outward orientation, sometimes pointing almost straight back toward the Sun, before returning to the surrounding flow.
These are local, temporary structures—not evidence that the Sun’s entire magnetic field suddenly flipped. The reversal travels outward with the solar wind, like a kink carried along a moving magnetic strand. Individual switchbacks observed in NASA’s December 4, 2019 results release lasted seconds to minutes.

Why the spacecraft had to go close to the Sun
Near Earth, roughly 93 million miles from the Sun, the solar wind can look comparatively smooth after many days of expansion and mixing. Parker sampled it much nearer its source, including early encounters about 15 million miles from the Sun and inside Mercury’s orbit. There, the probe found a highly structured flow rather than a uniform stream.
That location lets scientists examine magnetic shapes before they are erased or blended together. It also helps connect conditions in the corona—the Sun’s hot outer atmosphere—with the wind that eventually fills the heliosphere.
Why can the field point backward?
The solar wind consists of charged particles threaded by magnetic-field lines. Those lines are carried outward, but they can bend, twist and reconnect. A switchback is the passage of one such bent structure past the spacecraft. In the brief interval when the kink sweeps over Parker, the measured field points sunward even though the surrounding solar-wind flow continues outward.

The word “backward” therefore describes the field direction at a particular location and time. It does not mean that the solar wind has reversed course or that the Sun has undergone a global polarity change.
Leading explanations for switchbacks
NASA has presented several active explanations rather than a settled ranking. They differ mainly in where the structure begins, what physical process creates it, how its size should change with distance, which wind streams should contain it, and whether it can supply the energy needed to heat and accelerate the flow.

Interchange reconnection in detail
NASA’s April 29, 2020 analysis highlighted interchange reconnection. In this model, an open magnetic field line—one that extends into interplanetary space—encounters a closed loop rooted at both ends in the Sun. Reconnection changes the connectivity and launches an S-shaped kink outward with the plasma. The idea was first proposed in 1996 using observations from the Ulysses mission, but NASA described it as a possible explanation, not a final verdict.

Do switchbacks heat and accelerate the solar wind?
Evidence increasingly says that they can contribute substantially. Switchbacks are associated with Alfvén-wave fluctuations, in which magnetic and velocity perturbations travel through the plasma. As those fluctuations interact and dissipate, they can transfer energy to particles and help maintain the wind’s high temperature and speed.

That result addresses a central question of heliophysics, although it does not prove that every switchback forms through the same mechanism or supplies energy in the same way.

Why the finding matters for space weather
The solar wind forms the flowing outer atmosphere of the Sun and fills the heliosphere. Changes in its speed, density and magnetic field can compress or disturb Earth’s magnetosphere, influence radiation conditions and alter the propagation of solar eruptions. Better measurements close to the source give models a physical starting point instead of forcing them to infer the wind’s structure only after it has traveled to Earth.

Understanding switchbacks also helps separate two questions that are often merged: how the wind is accelerated to hundreds of miles per second, and how its magnetic field becomes so irregular. A mechanism that explains the bend but cannot provide enough energy for the observed heating would be incomplete; this is why energy measurements are central to the debate.

NASA’s December 11, 2025 article described a related but different event. During Parker’s December 24, 2024 pass, only 3.8 million miles from the solar surface, the WISPR camera imaged a coronal mass ejection and elongated inflows—blobs of solar material pulled back toward the Sun after magnetic field lines tore and re-formed.

That observation shows magnetic reconfiguration and CME material recycling. It is not an in-situ switchback measured by FIELDS in the ordinary solar wind. Both phenomena involve changing magnetic connectivity, but one is a returning flow seen in a coronal eruption while the other is a transient field reversal carried outward by the solar wind.

What future measurements must settle
Scientists can distinguish the theories by combining Parker’s magnetic-field and particle data with remote images and measurements from other spacecraft. The most useful tests ask:
- Does a switchback carry a recognizable magnetic connection to a coronal source?
- Does its amplitude grow, decay or change shape with heliocentric distance as turbulence predicts?
- Are events concentrated at boundaries between fast and slow streams?
- Does the measured fluctuation energy match the heating and acceleration required by the surrounding wind?
As Parker makes closer and repeated passes, these comparisons should reveal whether one mechanism dominates or whether switchbacks have several origins. NASA associate administrator for science Thomas Zurbuchen described the early data as showing the Sun “in new and surprising ways,” while heliophysics program scientist Kelly Korreck called the continuing interpretation “the scientific process in action.”
The bottom line
Parker’s strange reversal is a magnetic switchback: a short-lived, sunward-pointing kink in an otherwise outward-moving solar-wind field. The probe’s near-Sun position revealed that such structures are common close to their source. Reconnection, turbulence and stream shear remain competing explanations, but measurements through 2024 indicate that the Alfvénic energy associated with switchbacks can help heat and accelerate fast solar wind. The 2025 CME inflows are a separate magnetic phenomenon, not a new name for switchbacks.
