NASA’s Earth Observatory has published an astronaut photograph of the Saririaky anorthosite massif in southern Madagascar. The bright outcrop is made of terrestrial rock—not material from the Moon—but anorthosite is also common in the Moon’s reflective highlands, making Earth examples useful for studying lunar geology.
Where is the Moon-like rock in Madagascar?
Saririaky lies in southern Madagascar, where the exposed massif appears as a bright, roughly circular feature against the surrounding dry landscape. NASA estimates the exposed outcrop covers about 100 square kilometers (40 square miles). Anorthosite also occurs in eastern Canada, Scandinavia and southern India.
The Madagascar formation is terrestrial anorthosite. Its resemblance to lunar highland rock is a geological comparison, not evidence that the outcrop came from the Moon.

What is anorthosite, and why does it resemble lunar rock?
Anorthosite is an intrusive igneous rock: magma cooled and solidified underground, allowing relatively large crystals to form. The rock type is abundant in the Moon’s bright, reflective highlands, which is why terrestrial anorthosite can offer scientists a way to examine comparable geology on Earth.

The analogy has limits. NASA identifies anorthosite in Montana’s Beartooth Mountains as a particularly close compositional match to lunar anorthosite; that does not establish Saririaky as an exact match. Lunar rocks returned by Apollo missions remain direct samples, while an Earth outcrop is a terrestrial comparison.
How old is the Saririaky massif?
NASA Earth Observatory reported in 2026 that the massif formed in the late Precambrian, at least 600 million years ago. By comparison, lunar anorthosites are more than 4 billion years old and formed as the Moon’s early magma ocean cooled and minerals accumulated to build crust.

A direct lunar example is Apollo 15 sample 15415, nicknamed the Genesis Rock. It is an anorthosite from the Moon’s primordial crust; NASA says geologists at the Manned Spacecraft Center later concluded it was about 4 billion years old. On August 1, 1971, Apollo 15 commander David R. Scott said, “Guess what we just found,” then added, “I think we found what we came for.” NASA’s Genesis Rock account identifies the sample and its Apollo context.
What shaped the landscape around Saririaky?
The massif sits within a ductile shear zone. NASA describes the surrounding rocks as having been reshaped under high pressure and temperature, leaving north–south-trending linear patterns. Geologists associate much of this deformation with ancient landmasses colliding during the assembly of Gondwana.

NASA also reports a proposal that another anorthosite massif roughly 60 kilometers (about 40 miles) to the north was once joined to Saririaky and later separated by tectonic stretching, a process called boudinage. This is an interpretation, not a settled demonstration that the two outcrops were connected.
What does the ISS photograph show—and how was it processed?
An Expedition 75 crew member aboard the International Space Station took the image on August 28, 2026. NASA identifies it as ISS075-E-85249. The photograph was made with a Nikon Z9 digital camera and a 400-millimeter focal-length lens; the ISS Crew Earth Observations Facility and NASA Johnson Space Center’s Earth Science and Remote Sensing Unit provided it.

NASA says the image was cropped and contrast-adjusted, and lens artifacts were removed. It is therefore an astronaut photograph processed for presentation, not an untouched camera image. NASA Earth Observatory’s image and explanation provide the source details.

What Earth’s anorthosite can—and cannot—tell us about the Moon
Earth outcrops let researchers study anorthosite in its geological setting, while Apollo samples provide material collected directly from the Moon. Those sources answer related but distinct questions: Saririaky helps illustrate an Earth occurrence of a lunar-relevant rock type; the Genesis Rock is evidence from the Moon itself. Their shared name does not mean their ages, histories or compositions are interchangeable.
