NASA has not confirmed that life ever existed on Mars. In a finding announced on September 10, 2025, the agency said a rock sample collected by the Perseverance rover contains a potential biosignature: a pattern that could have a biological origin but needs further study before scientists can determine whether life was present. Nonbiological explanations remain possible, and whether the sample can be returned to Earth for more detailed analysis is unresolved in the NASA program updates described here.

What NASA found in the Cheyava Falls rock

Perseverance encountered the arrowhead-shaped Cheyava Falls rock in July 2024 while exploring the Bright Angel formation in Neretva Vallis, an ancient river valley in Jezero Crater. NASA describes the valley as 400 meters wide and the rock as 1 meter by 0.6 meters. The rover drilled a sample from the rock and named it Sapphire Canyon.

The sedimentary rocks in the formation contain clay and silt, organic carbon, sulfur, oxidized iron, and phosphorus. Higher-resolution measurements by the rover’s PIXL and SHERLOC instruments revealed patterned mineral reaction fronts that NASA calls “leopard spots.” Those spots carry signatures of vivianite, a hydrated iron phosphate, and greigite, an iron sulfide. NASA’s September 10, 2025 release and its Jet Propulsion Laboratory mineral-map description explain the observation and the possible interpretations.

Why it could be a biosignature—and why it is not proof

One possible explanation is that ancient microbes used chemical reactions involving organic material and iron-bearing minerals to obtain energy. The combination of minerals and textures is scientifically interesting because it gives researchers a pattern to investigate, rather than merely a single chemical ingredient.

But the minerals can also form without life. NASA identified possible nonbiological pathways involving high temperatures, acidic conditions, or organic compounds. The agency said the rocks show no evidence of high temperatures or acidic conditions, but that does not eliminate every abiotic explanation. NASA Perseverance project scientist Katie Stack Morgan put the distinction plainly: “And while abiotic explanations for what we see at Bright Angel are less likely given the paper’s findings, we cannot rule them out.”

“Potential biosignature” is therefore a deliberately cautious term, not a synonym for fossil or organism. NASA defines it as “a substance or structure that might have a biological origin but requires more data or further study before a conclusion can be reached about the absence or presence of life.” As lead author Joel Hurowitz of Stony Brook University explained, seeing compelling chemical signatures was not enough by itself; scientists had to analyze what the data could mean. Stack Morgan has also emphasized that claims about past extraterrestrial life require extraordinary evidence.

What evidence would help distinguish life from chemistry

Scientists would need to test competing explanations against the same evidence: whether microbial metabolism could produce the observed mineral pattern, whether known nonbiological processes could produce the same minerals and textures under the rock’s conditions, and what additional chemical, structural, and geological context would discriminate between them. The rover can map composition and texture in place, but it cannot carry the full range of sophisticated laboratory instruments available on Earth.

NASA’s sample-return science overview describes returning samples for detailed laboratory analysis, including investigation of their astrobiological significance and whether they contain evidence of past life. NASA’s FY2027 budget request likewise describes the Cheyava Falls sample as a potential biosignature and notes that Earth-based study could provide more precise and in-depth analysis. That potential is not itself confirmation: the current rover observations have not established that the minerals formed biologically.

Will Sapphire Canyon be returned to Earth?

The available NASA program statements do not establish a final funded plan or a confirmed return date. In January 2025, NASA said it was pursuing two possible landing architectures and expected to confirm a program design in the second half of 2026. Separately, NASA’s announcement about its FY2026 budget proposal said the proposal would end Mars Sample Return. These statements describe planning and a budget proposal, respectively; they do not, by themselves, settle the program’s final funded status.

As a result, it is not accurate to say either that Sapphire Canyon is scheduled to arrive on Earth or that it will never be returned. Without a return, scientists can continue studying the rover’s measurements, but the detailed Earth-laboratory analyses NASA describes would not be possible on this sample. The next decisive question is both scientific and practical: whether researchers can rule out nonbiological formation, and whether the sample can reach laboratories equipped to investigate it in greater depth.

What the discovery does—and does not—mean

  • It does mean: NASA identified an unusual mineral and chemical pattern in a Martian rock that could be consistent with past microbial activity.
  • It does not mean: NASA has announced proof of Martian life, found a confirmed fossil, or identified an organism.
  • It remains open: whether abiotic processes can fully explain the observations, and whether the sample will be returned for laboratory study.
