NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman says investigators should stay open-minded about unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), commonly called UFOs—but he did not say that aliens have been found. In a NewsNation interview broadcast September 25, 2026, he said he leaned toward natural phenomena or possible advanced technology developed by an adversary, while adding that NASA should have a role if evidence ever pointed to extraterrestrial visitors.
What did Jared Isaacman say about UFOs?
Speaking with Blake Burman, host of NewsNation’s The Hill, Isaacman said: “My position going into every one of these: one, be open-minded. I mean, it is kind of our job to go out and try to answer the question ‘are we alone?’ And I said look, if it’s aliens, I think NASA should have a seat at the table in this for sure.” Space.com reported the interview and quoted the exchange.
His wording was conditional: if a UAP proved to be extraterrestrial, NASA should be involved. It was not an announcement that any reported object had been identified as an alien craft.

Asked what his gut told him, Isaacman said he leaned toward either a phenomenon that can occur naturally or a technological explanation. He described a possible “Sputnik Moment” in which people might be testing “new stealthy or next generation type technologies,” and said adversary testing of next-generation propulsion was “certainly in the realm of the possible.” These were his inclinations and possibilities, not verified explanations for particular UAP reports.

The possibilities he named differ in what evidence might support them: natural phenomena could account for an unusual observation without a new craft, while an advanced-technology hypothesis would require reliable evidence about an object’s characteristics and origin. Extraterrestrial origin remains a conditional possibility in his remarks, not a conclusion with equivalent evidence.
What has NASA said the evidence needs?
NASA’s Independent Study Team report, published in September 2023, emphasized systematic data collection and rigorous analysis. It also discussed how NASA could help improve reporting and reduce stigma around reporting UAP. The report did not validate the claim that UAP are extraterrestrial.

One example in the report illustrates why an unusual-looking video is not enough to establish extraordinary performance. Sensor movement and parallax—the apparent shift in an object’s position as the observer moves—can make an object seem to travel rapidly. For the video examined, the available data did not require extraordinary speed. NASA’s report put the broader principle this way: “NASA can model for the public how to approach a topic, such as UAP, by applying transparent reporting and rigorous analyses when acquiring future data.” Read NASA’s 2023 UAP Independent Study Team report.
- Sensor data: Are the original data, viewing conditions, and sensor behavior known?
- Independent analysis: Can other analysts examine the evidence rather than relying on a short clip or a secondhand description?
- Ordinary explanations: Could perspective, parallax, or another familiar phenomenon explain the apparent motion or shape?
Do rising UAP reports mean sightings are increasing?
NASA’s 2023 report cited historical Department of Defense figures from an ODNI analysis published in 2022: 247 new reports from March 5, 2021, through August 30, 2022, compared with 263 reports filed in the 17 years before March 2021. These are dated historical counts, not a current tally. The report said ODNI and the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) assessed that increased awareness of potential threats and reduced stigma around reporting partly contributed to the rise.

The report also described NASA’s Aviation Safety Reporting System as receiving approximately 100,000 reports per year. That figure refers to NASA’s voluntary, confidential aviation-safety system as described by the study team in 2023—not to UAP reports. NASA said the system’s reporting framework could be useful, although it was designed for aviation safety rather than UAP.

In this context, open-mindedness means being willing to investigate reports without deciding their explanation in advance. It does not mean treating every proposed explanation as equally supported or interpreting an unidentified object as extraterrestrial by default. Isaacman’s interview expresses a posture toward investigation; the NASA study supplies a method: collect better data, analyze it rigorously, and distinguish what observations show from what remains unknown.
