Researchers can compare Artemis II’s released lunar science images, video, crew audio, annotations and reports with Apollo’s onboard and air-to-ground records, transcripts and supporting material. The useful comparisons are between records that answer the same kind of question—not between datasets assumed to share identical formats, processing or observation methods.
What Artemis II data can researchers compare with Apollo?
NASA announced on October 7, 2026, that more than 800 gigabytes of Artemis II lunar science data had been uploaded to the Planetary Data System (PDS). The release includes more than 11,000 full-resolution images and video from crew handheld and Orion cameras, 8.5 hours of audio recordings of crew scientific observations, crew-annotated images, and three supporting documents: the Artemis II Preliminary Lunar Science Report, Artemis II Lunar Science Operations Report and Artemis II Lunar Science Data User Guide.
These materials can be set alongside Apollo records, but the right pairing depends on the research question. NASA describes Artemis II as complementary to decades of Apollo and robotic-explorer data; that does not mean the archives use the same instruments, file formats, workflows or protocols.

NASA’s PDS overview describes the archive as a long-term resource for planetary mission data and other flight and ground-based data acquisitions. The PDS release and its user guide are the appropriate starting points for scientific use; NASA’s Artemis II media resources and the Artemis II image collection are useful for orientation and access to public-facing imagery, video and related materials.

Where can I find the source records?
Artemis II lunar science archive
Start with NASA’s October 7, 2026 release for the dataset description and links to the released reports and user guide. Use the guide and the download options on each item’s page to establish what file you have. The image collection says its default downloads are converted, lossy JPEGs; original camera raw files, such as Nikon NEF, are available by request on individual image pages as processing continues. Do not label a file raw or a final archived product without confirming its specific download option and documentation.
Apollo transcripts and journals
NASA’s mission transcript collection provides scanned transcripts from recorded air-to-ground transmissions and onboard recordings. Most Apollo missions produced four transcript types: command-module onboard voice recorder, lunar-module onboard voice, Public Affairs Office commentary, and technical air-to-ground. Identify the mission and transcript type rather than treating “Apollo transcript” as one uniform record.

The Apollo Lunar Surface Journal and Apollo Flight Journal provide navigation and context. The Lunar Surface Journal is an annotated and corrected record of lunar-surface conversations supplemented with commentary, photos, maps, background documents, audio and video. The Flight Journal covers crewed flight phases away from the lunar surface. Distinguish journal annotations and commentary from the underlying scanned transcript. NASA’s Apollo program page also links to historical publications, transcripts and other program resources.

- Define the question first. Choose whether you are studying lunar visual or geological observations, crew perception and decisions, observation planning, or spacecraft performance. The question determines which evidence types belong together.
- Match medium to medium. Pair crew audio or transcribed speech with Apollo voice records, imagery with imagery, and observation planning with the Artemis II operations report and relevant Apollo records. A still image, a transcript and a report are not interchangeable evidence.
- Record provenance and timing. For each item, note who created it, when it was recorded or edited, and which mission phase it documents. Separate crew-created observations, instrument records, official reports, scanned historical records and later editorial aids.
- Check processing and format. Note whether an image is a converted JPEG or camera raw file, whether a historical record is a scan or transcription, and whether annotations or editorial corrections have been added. Use item-level documentation for technical claims.
- Keep observation separate from interpretation. A crew note or transcript records what was said or noted; a later journal explanation supplies editorial context. Cite and describe each according to its role rather than presenting an interpretation as the original record.
- State limits with the finding. NASA characterizes Artemis II data as complementary to Apollo and robotic data. Unless the relevant technical documentation establishes equivalence, do not claim matching cameras, calibrations, image resolution, processing pipelines or observation protocols.
Are Artemis II and Apollo data directly comparable?
They are comparable for carefully bounded questions, but not as if they were standardized measurements from one continuous observing system. The strongest comparisons preserve differences in medium, provenance, mission phase, processing and the question being asked. NASA’s release describes the combined imagery, audio and crew notes as a dataset for exploration and analysis; a cross-era conclusion still needs to account for how each record was produced.

The published summary does not establish precise cross-era instrument calibration, equivalent image resolution or matching observation protocols. For those claims, researchers need to consult the released Artemis II reports and user guide, plus the documentation for the specific Apollo and Artemis II records being analyzed.

NASA’s SLS reference guide reports more than 27,000 Artemis II SLS instrumentation data sources and more than 20,000 operational and engineering data channels. Those figures describe vehicle instrumentation, not the lunar science images, audio or crew observations in the PDS release. Keep spacecraft performance and engineering telemetry separate from comparisons of lunar science evidence.

NASA’s SLS instrumentation and vehicle telemetry guide distinguishes operational, engineering and developmental instrumentation data. Include those records only when the research question concerns vehicle behavior, and label them accordingly.
