A NAS is usually the better fit when your home server’s main job is shared storage, backups, or managing several drives. A mini PC is usually the better starting point when you want a flexible computer for services or virtual machines. Neither category wins for every home: NAS devices can also run apps and containers, while a mini PC can serve files if you equip it with suitable storage and software. Choose for the work you need done, then check the exact model and configuration.

What separates a NAS from a mini PC?

A NAS, or network-attached storage device, is built around making storage available to devices on a network. Its bays, drive-management features, and administration software are central to the product. A mini PC is a compact general-purpose computer. Its appeal is flexible compute: the operating system and software you install determine whether it runs services, virtual machines, file sharing, or other workloads.

The distinction is about emphasis, not a hard boundary. Some NAS systems can run applications and Docker containers; TrueNAS, for example, lists Linux and Docker container apps, and UGREEN says its DXP2800 can run multiple apps. Conversely, a mini PC can provide file services, but you must account for how storage will attach, how the software will manage it, and how you will maintain it. The label alone does not tell you whether a particular system can handle your workload.

For a home server, think in terms of two needs: where will your data live, and what will the machine compute? If the first question dominates, start by comparing NAS systems. If the second dominates, start with mini PCs and verify that a chosen model has the resources and software support your services require.

Which option fits your main workload?

Choose a NAS-first setup for shared files and storage

A NAS is the more direct fit if you want one place for household files, a network destination for backups, or a system designed to manage multiple drives. Bay count matters: it affects how many drives can be installed internally and which storage layouts are available. A two-bay model may suit a modest setup, while larger-bay systems offer more drive positions. The number of bays alone does not determine usable capacity or protection; those depend on drive sizes and the chosen layout.

A NAS can still be more than a file box. The TrueNAS Mini data sheet dated January 2026 lists Linux and Docker container apps, while UGREEN describes multiple-app support for the DXP2800. That establishes that application use is possible on these products, not that every app or workload will perform well on every NAS. Check the hardware and software requirements for the particular service you intend to run.

Choose a mini PC-first setup for flexible compute

A mini PC is the stronger starting point if your main goal is to run a mix of services or virtual machines and you want a general-purpose computer as the foundation. Its suitability depends on the exact model, operating system, available memory and storage, and the software you plan to use. There is no single mini-PC specification or price that can be compared with the NAS examples here: no mini PC model was selected for this comparison.

Do not treat “mini PC” as shorthand for a complete storage system. Before choosing one, determine where the data will reside and whether the computer’s internal storage, any external storage, and your chosen software support the arrangement you want. Include those components in the cost and administration plan rather than comparing the computer’s price with a diskless NAS enclosure.

Use a workload list when you need both

If you want both centralized storage and several compute services, make a short list of the jobs that matter most. For each one, note whether it needs large or multi-drive storage, a particular operating system or app, or hardware capabilities the candidate system may not provide. A NAS with app support may cover a modest mixed workload; a mini PC paired with suitable storage may be a better fit when compute flexibility is the priority. The relevant answer depends on those requirements and the exact configuration—not a universal rule that one category cannot do the other’s job.

Compare storage, protection, and expansion

Count bays before comparing capacity

Check the number and type of drive positions, which drives are supported, and how the system can be expanded. As concrete examples, UGREEN identifies its NASync DXP2800 as a two-bay NAS with two M.2 slots. QNAP describes its TS-264 as a two-bay device and shows a configuration with two 3.5-inch drives in RAID 1 alongside two M.2 SSDs. These examples illustrate that a NAS can combine hard-drive bays with SSD slots; they do not establish identical capacity, performance, or expansion options across all two-bay devices.

Capacity claims can require careful reading. UGREEN’s DXP2800 page gives a maximum capacity of 60TB in its specifications table, but other copy on the same page says “up to 64TB.” Do not treat either number as a guaranteed usable capacity for every drive combination. Check the current compatibility information, supported drive sizes, and the capacity of the configuration you intend to install.

For broader bay-count choices, the TrueNAS Mini data sheet dated January 2026 documents 5+2-bay and 12-bay enclosures. When a NAS Selector is available, use it to narrow model choices against your requirements; Synology’s selector asks buyers for requirements, and its support tools include a RAID calculator. A calculator can help plan a layout, but confirm the selected model’s supported drives and storage options before buying.

Understand what a storage layout does—and does not do

The DXP2800 specification lists JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, and RAID 1. The January 2026 TrueNAS Mini data sheet documents OpenZFS RAIDZ1, RAIDZ2, mirror, and stripe options. Those are not interchangeable labels: the available layouts differ in how they organize drives and what they offer in capacity, redundancy, or performance. Decide what matters for your data, then check the product documentation for the precise behavior and recovery process of the layout you select.

RAID or another redundant layout is not a substitute for a separate backup. It can help a system remain available after some drive failures, depending on the layout, but it does not by itself protect against accidental deletion, theft, fire, or every form of corruption. If the files matter, plan an independent backup copy and a way to restore it. Include the backup destination in your capacity and cost calculations; a protected primary array without a separate copy is not a complete backup plan.

Plan for replacement and growth

Before committing to a storage layout, check how the system handles a failed drive, what replacement procedure the manufacturer documents, and whether drives must be on a compatibility list. TrueNAS recommends drives designed for NAS workloads; use the selected system’s compatibility information to verify the exact drive and capacity rather than assuming that every drive will be supported. Also ask whether your likely future storage needs fit the enclosure’s bays and expansion options. A system that meets today’s capacity target but cannot accommodate expected growth may not be the better value.

Compare compute, networking, and administration

Check the exact hardware against the services you plan to run

Specific model specifications are more useful than category stereotypes. UGREEN lists the DXP2800 with an Intel N100, 8GB of DDR5 memory, one 2.5GbE port, two M.2 slots, and UGOS Pro. QNAP’s TS-264 page describes dual 2.5GbE ports. These are examples of what particular NAS products provide; they are not a specification for every NAS, nor a direct comparison with an unspecified mini PC.

For either category, list the requirements of your intended services: operating-system support, memory, storage, and any particular hardware capability the software needs. Then verify them against the exact model. A NAS’s ability to run containers does not mean it is a good host for every container workload, just as a mini PC’s general-purpose design does not guarantee that it has the ports, storage arrangement, or capabilities you need.

Account for networking end to end

Port speed on the server is only one part of network performance. The DXP2800 example has one 2.5GbE port; the TS-264 example has two. Before paying for faster networking, check whether the other equipment and client devices on your home network can use that connection speed. Also consider the number of ports you need and how the system will fit your network design. A faster port on a server does not, by itself, make every transfer faster.

Choose the administration model you are prepared to maintain

A NAS provides a storage-focused product and software environment; a mini PC requires you to choose and manage a general-purpose operating system and file-service setup suited to your needs. In either case, understand how you will apply updates, receive drive or system alerts, and regain access if a configuration fails. Compare the actual setup and management tools offered by the models under consideration rather than assuming every NAS is effortless or every mini PC requires the same level of work.

Product and source Published power figure How to interpret it
UGREEN NASync DXP2800; manufacturer product specifications accessed in 2026 16.38 W during drive access; 5.24 W during drive hibernation Two stated operating conditions for this model; not directly comparable with the TrueNAS maximum figures below.
Smaller stated TrueNAS Mini configuration; January 2026 data sheet 40 W diskless; 111 W with drives and a 10G add-on card Maximum figures for the stated configuration, not drive-access or hibernation readings.
Larger stated TrueNAS Mini configuration; January 2026 data sheet 63 W diskless; 167 W with drives and a 10G add-on card Maximum figures for the stated configuration, not drive-access or hibernation readings.

These figures do not establish which category uses less electricity. A fair operating-cost comparison would require measurements for the exact systems in comparable configurations and states, including their installed drives and workload. No same-workload mini-PC comparison is established here. If electricity use matters to your decision, seek comparable measurements for the specific candidates and calculate cost using your electricity rate and expected operating time; do not extrapolate from these unlike manufacturer values.

Budget the complete setup, not just the base unit

The DXP2800 is sold diskless, so its quoted hardware configuration does not include the drives. A mini PC’s complete cost may also include the storage, enclosure or external drives, and software needed for the intended file-service setup. For either route, account for a separate backup destination and any required accessories as well as the main unit. No current purchase prices or matched total-cost comparison are established here, so verify the price and compatibility of every component before deciding.

Noise depends on the installed system

There is no comparable noise measurement for the NAS and mini-PC configurations discussed here, so neither category can be ranked as quieter on this evidence. Noise depends on the enclosure, fans, installed drives, placement, and workload. If the server will sit near a desk or living area, compare model-specific measurements or assess the exact completed configuration rather than relying on the product category.

A practical way to make the choice

  1. Write down the primary job. Decide whether the priority is shared files and multi-drive storage or flexible compute and virtual machines. List secondary jobs separately so they do not obscure the main requirement.
  2. Set a storage target. Estimate how much usable space you need now and what growth to allow for. Count bays, check drive compatibility, and determine whether the candidate system can be expanded as planned.
  3. Choose protection and backup separately. Decide what storage layout suits your needs, then identify a separate destination for backup copies and a practical restore process. Do not count RAID alone as your backup plan.
  4. Verify software and hardware fit. Check the exact model’s operating-system or app support, memory, ports, and storage options against the requirements of the services you intend to run. Container support is a capability to verify for a specific workload, not a blanket performance guarantee.
  5. Calculate the whole-system cost. Include drives, any storage enclosure or accessories, the backup destination, and any software needs. For running costs, compare candidates using measurements taken in comparable states, not unlike manufacturer specifications.
  6. Check placement and upkeep. Consider network reach, likely noise in the intended location, update and alert tools, and the documented process for replacing a failed drive or recovering the system.

How the named NAS examples differ

The following examples show why the model matters more than the category label. Specifications below come from the manufacturers’ product materials; they are not independent performance tests.

Example Documented configuration or capability What it helps illustrate
UGREEN NASync DXP2800 Two SATA bays; Intel N100; 8GB DDR5; one 2.5GbE port; two M.2 slots; UGOS Pro. Listed storage layouts: JBOD, Basic, RAID 0, and RAID 1. Drives are not included. A compact NAS can include app support and SSD slots as well as drive bays. Its capacity copy is inconsistent: the specification table says 60TB, while other page copy says “up to 64TB”; verify the current supported configuration.
QNAP TS-264 Two bays; dual 2.5GbE ports; the manufacturer describes a configuration with two 3.5-inch drives in RAID 1 alongside two M.2 SSDs. A two-bay NAS can combine hard-drive storage, M.2 SSDs, and multiple faster network ports. Confirm exact supported capacity and configuration on the current model page.
TrueNAS Mini models The January 2026 data sheet documents 5+2-bay and 12-bay enclosures, with OpenZFS RAIDZ1, RAIDZ2, mirror, and stripe options, and Linux and Docker container apps. The NAS category also includes larger-bay systems and software capabilities that extend beyond basic file sharing. The data sheet’s power values are maximums for stated configurations, not directly comparable with the DXP2800’s operating-state values.

Which is better for a home server?

For a home server centered on household storage, backup destinations, and multiple drives, start with a NAS and compare bay count, drive support, storage layouts, and backup workflow. For a server centered on flexible services or virtual machines, start with a mini PC, then verify its specific hardware, software, and storage plan. If you need both, compare systems against the actual workloads and total configuration rather than assuming that one device type cannot serve the other role.

Before buying, settle the details that product categories cannot answer: required usable capacity, the drives and backup destination, supported software, network fit, noise at the intended location, and complete cost. Those details—not the word “NAS” or “mini PC”—determine which home server is the better choice.
