If your NAS still meets your storage, performance, workload, and software-support needs, there is no universal age at which you must replace it. Upgrade when it no longer does. The available manufacturer information does not establish UGREEN or Synology as the overall winner: compare support for your exact model, the work you need it to do, and the compatibility of any drives or components you plan to use.
When is it time to upgrade your NAS?
Replace the NAS when its limits interfere with what you need it to do—not simply because it has reached a particular age. Check whether it can still provide enough usable storage, handle your actual services and workload, deliver acceptable performance, and receive software support appropriate for your needs.
- Capacity: You cannot meet your storage needs with the current bays, drives, or expansion options.
- Workload: The NAS no longer handles the services or number of users you rely on.
- Performance: It cannot deliver acceptable results for your actual tasks.
- Support: The exact model’s software-support status no longer fits your security and maintenance requirements.
Manufacturer documentation does not establish a universal replacement age. Nor does the available material provide controlled, model-by-model performance testing that would identify a performance winner between the two brands.
How do UGREEN and Synology support differ?
The published statements address different things: Synology provides a product-level support-status view and DSM update guidance, while UGREEN states a minimum security-update period for UGOS Pro. Treat them as separate policies, not equivalent lifecycle guarantees.

| What to check | Synology | UGREEN |
|---|---|---|
| Product or software support status | Its product status page lists software-update status as Full, Limited, or End of Life. Check the exact model at Synology’s product support status page. | UGREEN says to consult its product support status list. Its UGOS Pro statement sets a minimum security-update period; check the relevant product information at UGREEN’s support statement. |
| Published update commitment | The cited DSM guidance explains update availability and behavior but does not establish a comparable fixed-duration commitment in the supplied information. See Synology’s DSM update guidance. | At least five years of UGOS Pro system security updates from the NAS product’s release date, according to UGREEN. This is a security-update commitment, not a stated feature-update duration. |
| Update eligibility | DSM update availability can vary with system configuration. | Verify the product’s status and applicable dates; the cited statement does not make the policy equivalent to Synology’s model-level status categories. |
What to check before choosing a replacement
1. Confirm support for your exact model
Look up the current NAS by model number, not just brand. Synology’s status page distinguishes Full, Limited, and End of Life software-update status, and its DSM guidance notes that update availability depends on system configuration. UGREEN says it provides at least five years of UGOS Pro security updates from the product release date. That period describes security updates; it should not be read as a promise about feature updates or as a direct equivalent to another vendor’s support lifecycle.
2. Match the NAS to your real workload
List the services, users, and storage tasks the replacement must support. The manufacturer sources here do not supply a controlled comparison across UGREEN and Synology models, so a brand-level performance claim would be unsupported. Compare candidate models against your own workload and requirements instead.

3. Check drives and components against the model
Before buying a NAS or parts, verify each drive, SSD, memory module, and UPS against the exact model’s current compatibility information. UGREEN publishes a compatibility list and warns that hardware, firmware, or software changes may affect compatibility and stability. Do not assume a component works merely because its connector or capacity appears suitable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Plan for updates and data protection
Synology describes major and minor DSM updates and provides automatic-installation settings. It also warns that updates are irreversible and that availability can vary by system configuration. Back up your data before updating, as Synology recommends in its DSM update guidance.

A practical upgrade decision
- Identify the current NAS model and check its software-support status with the manufacturer.
- Write down what is no longer working—capacity, performance, workload, or support—so you can distinguish an enclosure replacement from a drive or configuration change.
- Set requirements for the replacement, including the capacity and workload it must handle.
- Compare specific models on those requirements and on the support information available for each model; do not choose from brand reputation alone.
- Verify component compatibility for the exact NAS before purchasing drives, SSDs, memory, or a UPS.
- Back up before making changes, especially before a DSM update, which Synology says cannot be reversed.
Which brand should you choose?
Choose the specific model that meets your workload and capacity needs, has support terms you consider suitable, and supports the components you intend to use. The available manufacturer information supports checking UGREEN’s stated UGOS Pro security-update minimum and Synology’s model-specific status and DSM update guidance; it does not support a universal brand winner, a performance ranking, or a model recommendation without knowing your current NAS, bay count, capacity needs, workload, budget, and location.
