A 2.5GbE connection can raise the network ceiling on NAS file transfers, but only when the NAS, client, and every link between them support that speed. It does not prove the drives stopped being the limit. Check the full network path, then compare a network-only throughput test with a real SMB file copy and inspect the NAS’s storage and CPU activity.

Why a faster network link can change NAS transfer speeds

Every connection between the NAS and the client matters. If a 2.5GbE NAS connects through a switch port that negotiates at 1GbE, that segment can constrain the transfer. Check the negotiated speed at the NAS, client, and each switch or router port in the path; a device’s advertised capability does not establish the speed of its active connection. TP-Link’s overview gives 1Gbps a theoretical maximum of 125 MB/s and says typical real throughput is closer to 110–120 MB/s after protocol overhead. That is general context, not a prediction for a particular NAS.

A faster link increases available network capacity; it does not guarantee the NAS can read data from its drives, serve it over SMB, or deliver it to the client at that rate. CPU and memory, drive and storage-pool activity, SMB software and configuration, client hardware and storage, and switches can all affect achieved throughput. Synology’s SMB3 Multichannel troubleshooting guidance, last updated March 13, 2024, cautions: “Obsolete hard drives or CPUs may not provide the anticipated performance.” Synology’s guidance also discusses system and compatibility considerations for Multichannel.

Diagnose the limit before upgrading

  1. Map the path and record link rates. Note the NAS and client network adapters, the intervening switch or router ports, and the negotiated speed of each connection. A 1GbE segment remains a possible constraint in an otherwise 2.5GbE-capable path. Consider a 2.5GbE or multi-gig switch only if an intervening 1GbE port is the limiting link, and verify compatible ports across the path before buying.
  2. Run a wired file-copy test. Use Ethernet rather than Wi-Fi to reduce variables. Copy a large file and record the sustained rate; if your normal workload involves many small files, test that separately because it may behave differently. Synology recommends a direct wired test and checking storage-pool activity and drive health in its SMB slow-transfer troubleshooting guidance.
  3. Run a separate network-only throughput test. Test between the same endpoints if possible, without using the SMB file-copy workload as the network test. Compare that result with the real SMB copy. If network-only throughput is substantially faster, investigate the storage path, NAS and client CPU, SMB configuration, client storage, and workload characteristics. The comparison narrows the investigation; it does not identify one cause by itself.
  4. Inspect storage and system activity during the copy. Check whether the pool is rebuilding or otherwise busy, and review drive health. Look for NAS or client CPU limits as well. Avoid changing RAID mode casually to chase speed: I-O DATA warns that a drive failure in its RAID 0 configuration loses data.
  5. Check SMB Multichannel support before configuring it. Both NAS and client software and hardware must support the feature, and results depend on adapter speeds, port counts, and system capability. It is not a promise of linear scaling or a fix for a CPU, drive, or client bottleneck.

What published throughput figures can—and cannot—tell you

Vendor figures show what a particular configuration achieved, not what another NAS will achieve. The following results are setup-specific and should not be treated as direct comparisons across products or as expected speeds for your own system.

SMB Multichannel is not the same as link aggregation

SMB Multichannel and link aggregation are different configurations. Do not assume that combining ports through a generic aggregation setup will double the speed of one file transfer. SMB Multichannel depends on support and configuration at both ends; the result also depends on available adapters, port speeds, and system capability. Review the NAS and client documentation for the specific feature before changing the network. NETGEAR’s SMB Multichannel explanation and QNAP’s setup guidance describe vendor-specific details and requirements.

Choose the next step from the evidence

  • A link negotiates at 1GbE: Find the 1GbE segment. Upgrade it only if the NAS, client, and other links in the route can use the faster speed.
  • Network-only throughput is well above the SMB copy: Check storage-pool activity and drive health, then investigate NAS and client CPU, SMB configuration, client storage, and the file workload.
  • Both tests are low: Recheck negotiated rates and the network path, then look for limits in the endpoints or network equipment. The two tests alone do not isolate a single fault.
  • You are considering multiple ports: Confirm compatible SMB Multichannel support at both ends and distinguish it from link aggregation; do not count on a simple doubling of one transfer.

Without the NAS and client models, drive layout, topology, and before-and-after measurements, a claim that 2.5GbE proved the drives were not the bottleneck cannot be verified. The useful conclusion is narrower: the network may have been limiting transfers, and a faster link can reveal a different limit without eliminating storage as a possibility.
