A Git working tree mounted from a NAS can make one repository available from multiple computers without manually pushing and pulling changes between them. That convenience is the case for ScsDriver’s SFTP-drive approach—not a speed advantage: the author’s own timings show slower operations on the mount, especially when checking many files. Choose it for a small project and a reliable network if a single shared working copy matters more than responsiveness or offline access. For faster local work, use local clones; if you want the NAS to hold the shared repository rather than the live working tree, use Git over SSH.
What a NAS-mounted Git working tree does
In the workflow described by DEV Community author 疏影, the repository’s working directory lives on a NAS. ScsDriver mounts a NAS directory over SFTP and assigns it a Windows drive letter, so Git commands can be run against that network path. The author reports using git status, git commit, git log, and git worktree add in this setup. That is one person’s account, not a guarantee that every NAS, Windows configuration, repository, or Git operation will behave the same way. Read the author’s account.
The appeal is one shared working copy: switch computers and continue accessing the repository on the NAS, rather than remembering to push changes from one local clone before working from another. The trade-off is that file access still crosses the network. A mounted drive does not turn the NAS repository into a local one.
How the reported timings compare
The article reports the following measurements for its author’s setup. Its captured page does not show the year, and it does not provide enough benchmark methodology to treat these as general performance figures. They are useful as an illustration of the latency the author encountered, not as a prediction for another network or repository.

80 ms | 1.2 seconds |
git status, 10,000 files |
200 ms | 8 seconds |
git commit, 10 files |
100 ms | 600 ms |
git log --oneline -100 |
50 ms | 200 ms |
| Branch checkout | 1 second | 1.5 seconds |

All figures are reported by 疏影 in the DEV Community article; the year is not visible in the captured result. The article does not document enough about hardware, network conditions, cache state, or test procedure to support broader conclusions. It also characterizes large rebases and merges as slow and recommends cloning locally for those operations.
Mounted working tree, local clone, or SSH remote?
These are different ways to place the active working files and the shared repository. Git’s clone documentation supports SSH transport as well as cloning from local repository paths and file:// URLs. Git clone documentation

| Workflow | Where you work | Between-computer sync | Offline work | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| NAS-mounted working tree | Directly in the NAS directory mounted over SFTP | One shared working copy can reduce manual push/pull between your own computers, as the author describes | Depends on access to the NAS; the mounted working tree is not locally available when the network or NAS is unavailable | Small projects where one shared directory and convenience outweigh network latency |
| Local clone | In a repository on each workstation | Use Git remotes to exchange commits between clones | Work on the local clone without network access; remote operations wait until connectivity returns | Fast filesystem operations, offline work, or latency-sensitive tasks |
| Local clone with NAS-hosted SSH remote | In a repository on each workstation; the NAS hosts a Git remote | Push and fetch over SSH | Local commits can be made offline; pushing and fetching require access to the NAS | Keeping working files local while using the NAS as a shared Git destination |
Pro Git discusses file-based repositories on shared mounted filesystems, but cautions that mounting a remote disk can be difficult and slow compared with network-based access. It notes that an NFS-hosted repository may be slower than SSH access, where Git operates on local disks at each system. This is general guidance about mounted remote filesystems, not a test of ScsDriver or SFTP drive mounting. Pro Git: Git on the Server — The Protocols
For a NAS-hosted SSH remote, Synology documents enabling SSH, creating a bare repository, and cloning from the NAS over SSH in DSM 7. That arrangement leaves the working clone on your computer; the NAS stores the shared repository. The documented steps apply to Synology DSM 7, not automatically to other NAS vendors or versions. When to choose each workflow
Consider a mount when one shared copy is the priority
- You mainly work on a small repository and are comfortable with slower file operations.
- Your NAS and network are reliably available wherever you plan to work.
- You value opening the same working directory from multiple computers more than having a separate local copy on each one.
A mount is not a substitute for a backup or a second copy: the convenience of one live working tree also means its availability depends on access to that NAS directory.
Choose local clones when responsiveness or offline access matters
- Your project has many files or Git status and other filesystem-heavy work feels slow over the network.
- You need to work without a connection to the NAS.
- You expect large rebases or merges, which the source author found slow on the mount.
Local clones give each computer its own working directory. The cost is managing the flow of commits between them through Git remotes rather than simply reopening one shared tree.

It stores data locally on your private hard drives and does automatic backups. Thus, you can keep full control over it. The advanced encryption is TRUSTe certified in the United States and is awarded the first (and only) ETSI EN 303 645 certification mark for NAS products by TÜV SÜD Group.
Use an SSH remote when the NAS should be a destination, not your working drive
This keeps routine file access local while letting you push and fetch from a repository hosted on the NAS. It is a middle ground for developers who want the NAS to centralize Git history but do not want their editor and Git operations to work against a mounted network directory. Synology’s DSM 7 documentation is one vendor-specific example; consult the documentation for your NAS model and version before applying those steps.
What the ScsDriver account does—and does not—establish
The DEV Community article is an account of a working setup and its author-reported timings. It does not establish compatibility across all systems or provide a standardized comparison. It also mentions a seven-day trial and a price of $9.99 per year, but those product details are not independently confirmed here, so check ScsDriver’s current official product information before relying on availability or pricing.
