A NAS can keep files available after some drive failures, but it cannot protect them from every cause of loss. The most damaging setup gaps are treating RAID as a backup, keeping no independent off-site copy, and neglecting integrity checks and power planning. Synology’s guidance documents these risks; it does not establish which NAS or failures are behind the first-person headline, so the causes below are practical failure modes rather than a verified account of one person’s experience.

1. Treating RAID as a backup

RAID combines multiple drives to provide redundancy or performance, depending on the configuration. Redundancy can help keep a volume available after a limited number of drive failures, but it does not create a separate, recoverable copy of your files. Synology warns that RAID crashes and hard-drive failures can still result in data loss (Synology’s backup guidance).

RAID also cannot reliably undo accidental deletion, corruption that is written across the array, malware damage, theft, or a disaster that destroys the NAS. A mirror or parity arrangement is useful for storage continuity; it is not a substitute for backup.

Snapshots are useful, but not independent backups

A snapshot can preserve an earlier state and make rollback faster. But a snapshot stored on the NAS remains exposed to events affecting that device, and a synchronized copy can propagate unwanted changes. Synology distinguishes local multi-version copies from backups held at another destination (Synology’s backup guidance; Hyper Backup help). Use snapshots as one recovery layer, not as your only one.

2. Keeping no independent off-site copy

Synology recommends the 3-2-1 backup strategy: keep three copies of important data, on two types of storage, with one copy off-site (Synology’s 3-2-1 guidance). The point is separation: if the NAS fails or the home is affected by fire, theft, or another disaster, at least one copy should remain available elsewhere.

A directly attached external drive can provide a distinct local copy and may allow a fast restore. It is still in the same location, so it does not by itself cover a disaster affecting both the NAS and the drive. An off-site backup can be a separately maintained device stored elsewhere or an appropriate cloud backup. Choose based on how much data must be restored, how quickly it is needed, what the service or backup job covers, whether it keeps earlier versions, and the continuing cost. Check whether the backup includes the files and NAS configuration you actually need, and whether you can recover it if the NAS itself is unusable.

Make copies meaningfully independent

  • Keep a working copy on the NAS and additional copies on separate destinations.
  • Ensure at least one copy is physically off-site or otherwise isolated from the same local disaster.
  • Retain versions so a backup does not simply mirror a deletion or corruption.
  • Check the scope of each job: a successful run is useful only if it covers the data you expect to restore.

3. Skipping integrity checks and failure planning

Checksums can help identify data that has changed or become corrupted. On supported Synology systems, Btrfs can detect certain silent data corruption and may repair it when a valid redundant copy is available. Synology cautions that repair may fail; an off-site backup may then be needed (Synology: checksum mismatch errors).

Data scrubbing can check data and, when the storage layout and configuration allow, help address certain inconsistencies. Availability and behavior depend on the NAS model, filesystem, RAID layout, and whether advanced data integrity checksums were enabled for the shared folders. Synology recommends periodic scrubbing, but its instructions are not universal settings for every NAS (Synology data-scrubbing help). Confirm support and configuration for your own model and filesystem before relying on these features.

Plan for power and hardware problems

Synology lists unexpected power loss, drive problems, incompatible drives, and memory faults among possible contributors to volume crashes or checksum errors (volume-crash guidance; checksum guidance). Follow the vendor’s compatibility and health guidance for your specific model, and investigate alerts rather than assuming redundancy makes them harmless.

A compatible UPS with NAS shutdown support can give the system time to shut down cleanly during an outage. Synology recommends a UPS where improper shutdown has caused filesystem errors (Synology UPS guidance). A UPS reduces the risk of an abrupt shutdown; it does not preserve files if the NAS or its storage is lost.

How to build a recovery plan you can trust

  1. Identify what must be recoverable. List important shared folders, application data, and configuration information, then verify which backup tasks include each item.
  2. Create an independent backup destination. Add a separate local destination for convenient restores and an off-site copy for location-wide disasters. Preserve older versions where your backup method supports them.
  3. Check integrity features for your setup. Confirm model, filesystem, RAID layout, and shared-folder checksum settings before enabling or scheduling scrubbing features.
  4. Protect against abrupt shutdowns. If your NAS supports it, configure a compatible UPS and verify that the NAS receives the shutdown signal.
  5. Restore a sample periodically. Retrieve files from the independent destination to a safe location and open them. A completed backup task does not by itself prove that a usable restore is available.

These measures address different failure modes: RAID may preserve availability after some disk failures, integrity tools may detect or repair some corruption, snapshots can support rollback, and independent versioned backups provide a separate recovery path. No single layer guarantees recovery.
