The most reliable way to find out whether a NAS backup will work is to restore data to a separate test location, then open and check what came back. A successful backup job or integrity scan is useful evidence, but neither proves that you can recover the files, versions, or whole system you need.

What a useful NAS backup test proves

A practical test should answer three questions: can you access the backup, can you restore the right data and version, and can you use the restored result? Include a few important files, a folder whose structure matters, and an application or system recovery path if that is part of your backup plan.

Keep the test separate from live data. Restore to a new folder, spare device, or isolated environment rather than overwriting the original files. Record what you restored, the backup version used, how long the restore took, any errors, and any missing or damaged items.

Choose the right kind of check

Test What it can tell you What it does not establish
Quick or metadata check Whether backup metadata—and, depending on the job, some hashes—appears consistent. That every needed file can be restored and used.
Content or hash check A more thorough check of backup contents when supported by the job type and software version. That an end-to-end restore or full disaster recovery will succeed.
File or folder restore Whether selected items and versions can be recovered to a separate destination and opened. That an entire NAS, application, or service can be recovered.
Isolated recovery drill Whether a supported system or workload can be brought back in a test environment. That the same process is available on every NAS or for every workload.

Integrity checks and restore drills serve different purposes. A check can detect corruption, while a restore tests the recovery path you would actually depend on. QNAP notes that HBS 3 quick and content checks vary by job type and software version; content checks are more thorough and may use substantially more system resources or network transfer. QNAP explains HBS 3 integrity-check behavior.

Prepare the test before you run it

  1. Identify the backup job and destination. Note which NAS job created the copy and whether its destination is another NAS, an external drive, or another supported target.
  2. Select the version to test. Record the backup version or retention point. If version history matters, include a recently changed file and an older retained version.
  3. Gather access details. Make sure you have any encryption password, recovery key, or credentials required to read the backup.
  4. Choose a separate restore target. Use a new folder or test device. For a full system or service rehearsal, choose an isolated environment or spare system supported by the vendor.
  5. Set expectations. List the filenames, folder structure, contents, and versions you expect to recover. This makes it easier to identify an incomplete or wrong-version restore.

Run an integrity check where available

Use the backup application’s integrity-check feature if your installed version and job type support the check you want. In QNAP HBS 3, the documented manual path is Backup & Restore, select the job, choose Check Data Integrity, then run Quick Check or Content Check. Content check must be enabled in the job configuration. Labels and availability can vary by release, so confirm them in the interface on your NAS. See QNAP’s HBS 3 procedure and qualifications.

A check that reports corruption is a reason to investigate, not to assume repair is guaranteed. QNAP says HBS 3 may attempt repair, but automatic repair is unavailable for some job configurations and older versions can have restrictions. QNAP documents the repair limitations.

Synology says a Hyper Backup task may switch to “Restore Only” after an integrity check detects destination corruption. Its troubleshooting guidance advises addressing the cause and recreating the task; it also recommends testing the source system and, for a remote NAS destination, the destination system. Restore representative data and inspect it

  1. Restore a small group of high-priority files to a new folder or test device.
  2. Restore a folder that includes subfolders if its structure matters to your work.
  3. If you rely on retained versions, restore both a recently changed file and an older version.
  4. Open the restored files in the applications that normally use them. For data that can be validated another way, compare its contents or expected properties.
  5. Check filenames, sizes, folder structure, and versions against your expectations. Confirm that encrypted backup data is accessible with the recovery credentials.
  6. Note elapsed time, errors, missing items, and any differences you find.

Do not treat a file appearing in the destination as proof that it is usable. The restore is meaningful only when the returned data matches the intended version and can be opened or otherwise validated.

Rehearse a whole-system recovery separately

If your recovery plan depends on restoring a machine, NAS, application, or service—not just individual files—test that path in an isolated environment or on a spare system where the vendor supports it. Synology describes using its built-in hypervisor for isolated disaster-recovery drills, but that is a vendor-specific option for supported workloads, not a feature every household NAS provides. Synology describes its backup and recovery options.

Understand what RAID, snapshots, and extra copies can—and cannot—do

RAID can help keep a system available after certain drive failures, and snapshots can provide a point-in-time route back from affected files or systems. Neither proves that an independent backup can be restored. Synology describes snapshots as a way to return to a prior point and recommends backing them up to another NAS; it also notes that multi-version local copies can help with corruption or accidental deletion while RAID or drive failure may still result in data loss. See Synology’s backup guidance.

A USB external hard drive can be one possible physical backup destination, but compatibility, capacity, filesystem, and restore workflow depend on the NAS and backup software. Test a restore from the actual drive you use. Synology’s guidance discusses external drives and multiple backup versions. Review Synology’s guidance on backup destinations.

Keep a record and repeat the test

After each test, keep a short record with the date, job and destination, backup version, items restored, elapsed time, errors, and corrective actions. Set a recurring reminder based on how important and changeable the data is, and run another test after a major change to the backup job, destination, encryption, or retention settings.
