Spoiler warning: This is a spoiler-inclusive catch-up guide. The most direct route to Boruto: Two Blue Vortex is Naruto (all 700 manga chapters), optional postwar context including Naruto: The Last, then Boruto: Naruto Next Generations through the Kawaki–Boruto identity reversal and the three-year timeskip. You can read the manga for the shortest canonical path or use the anime for a much longer adaptation with additional material.
The correct reading order
Read the story in this sequence:
- Naruto manga, chapters 1–700 (1999–2014). This is Masashi Kishimoto’s complete original series and the foundation for every later event.
- Postwar bridge, optionally including Naruto: The Last. This period shows the relationships and political calm that lead into the next generation. Films and novels can add context, but they are supplemental if your goal is to understand Two Blue Vortex.
- Boruto: Naruto Next Generations. Continue through Boruto’s childhood, the Chunin Exams, the scientific-ninja-tool incident, and the later Kawaki conflict.
- The Omnipotence and identity-reversal chapters. These are not optional if you want the premise of Part II to make sense.
- Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Start after the three-year gap, when Boruto returns to a world that believes he is Naruto’s enemy.
If you are anime-first, watch Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden before Boruto, then begin Two Blue Vortex in the manga. The anime properties are official adaptations, but a single worldwide streaming catalog is not guaranteed; availability changes by territory and date.

What happens in the original Naruto story
Naruto begins as the Hidden Leaf’s outcast
Naruto Uzumaki grows up isolated in Konohagakure because the Nine-Tails, the destructive fox spirit that attacked the village, is sealed inside him. Most adults treat him as a reminder of the disaster rather than as a child. He responds by seeking attention and declaring that he will become Hokage, the village’s leader, so everyone will acknowledge him.
After graduating from the academy, Naruto joins a three-person team with Sasuke Uchiha and Sakura Haruno under Kakashi Hatake. Their early missions establish the series’ central tensions: Naruto wants acceptance, Sasuke is driven by the destruction of his clan, Sakura must grow beyond her initial infatuation with Sasuke, and Kakashi teaches them that cooperation matters more than individual talent.

Rivalry, exams and the cost of power
Sasuke is a gifted survivor of the Uchiha massacre. His desire for revenge makes him Naruto’s rival and eventually pulls him toward leaving the village for greater power. Naruto’s bond with him becomes the emotional spine of the series: Naruto does not treat Sasuke as an enemy he can simply defeat, but as someone he refuses to abandon.
The Chunin Exams expand the cast and reveal how villages use young shinobi in a militarized world. The exam invasion and the death of the Third Hokage show that village politics can turn a test into a battlefield. Naruto’s victory over formidable opponents earns him respect, while Sasuke’s frustration with his own progress deepens.
Akatsuki and the escalation to a world war
As Naruto trains, the criminal organization Akatsuki hunts the tailed beasts, including the Nine-Tails sealed within him. Each confrontation raises the stakes from personal rivalry to the survival of entire villages. Naruto learns to control more of the power inside him, but power without emotional control repeatedly puts allies at risk.

Sasuke eventually leaves Konoha and pursues his own path through Orochimaru and later the remnants of Akatsuki politics. Naruto’s training with Jiraiya, the growth of his Rasengan-based techniques, and his encounters with Pain turn him from a reckless student into a shinobi capable of carrying a village’s hopes. After Pain’s assault on the Leaf, Naruto is recognized as the person who protected the village rather than the boy it once rejected.
The Fourth Shinobi World War and Naruto’s completed arc
The Fourth Shinobi World War unites former rivals against a threat that affects the entire shinobi world. Naruto works with the other jinchuriki and with the Allied Shinobi Forces, while Sasuke returns to the conflict for reasons of his own. The war exposes the origins of the chakra system, the Uchiha tragedy and the forces manipulating events from the shadows.
Rank #2
Naruto and Sasuke ultimately confront each other after the larger war ends. Their final battle resolves the ideological conflict that began when they were children: Naruto believes bonds can break cycles of hatred, while Sasuke initially believes peace requires control from above. Naruto’s refusal to give up on him allows Sasuke to accept responsibility and begin atonement.
The completed trajectory is the key fact to carry forward: Naruto goes from ostracized jinchuriki to trusted shinobi and, eventually, Seventh Hokage. The original manga concluded in 2014 with 700 chapters.
The postwar bridge: what is optional and what matters
Naruto: The Last and the peaceful interval
The years after the war establish the adult relationships that shape the next generation. Naruto: The Last is useful context for Naruto’s relationship with Hinata and for the quieter period before the new cast takes over. It is not necessary to consume every film or novel to follow the main manga continuity.
The important change is political as well as personal. The villages move from a generation defined by war toward cooperation and prosperity. Naruto eventually becomes Hokage, and the children who grew up during the war inherit institutions that are safer but still built on unresolved history.
Why the calm matters to Boruto
Boruto is not simply another war story. It asks what happens when children of famous heroes grow up in a technologically modernizing, comparatively peaceful world. Naruto’s success creates expectations for his son, while the Hokage’s workload limits the time he can spend at home. That tension is the starting point for Boruto’s resentment.

How Boruto: Naruto Next Generations changes the focus
Boruto Uzumaki wants recognition on his own terms
Boruto is Naruto’s son, but he does not want to be treated as a copy of the Seventh Hokage. He resents living in his father’s shadow and initially rejects the idea that becoming Hokage should define his life. At the same time, he wants recognition as a shinobi whose achievements are his own.
Boruto forms a three-person squad with Sarada Uchiha and Mitsuki. Sarada is Sasuke’s daughter and wants to become Hokage; Mitsuki’s origins and unusual abilities give the team a different perspective on identity and loyalty. Their instructor and missions place them between the traditions of the old shinobi system and new scientific tools.
The Chunin Exams and the prohibited scientific tool
During the Chunin Exams, Boruto uses a prohibited scientific ninja tool. The device can reproduce techniques without the years of training normally required, which makes it tempting for a child who wants to impress his father. Its use is exposed, and the incident forces Boruto to confront the difference between winning approval and earning trust.
The exam crisis also brings Naruto and Boruto into a dangerous confrontation with enemies connected to the Ōtsutsuki threat. Boruto’s relationship with his father changes after Naruto protects him and Boruto recognizes the burden Naruto has carried. This is the emotional foundation for later conflicts involving Kawaki.
Sasuke’s new role
Sasuke changes from Naruto’s rival into a mentor for Boruto. He teaches Boruto how to fight, read an opponent and survive outside the village’s protection. That transition is essential: Sasuke’s history gives him insight into the loneliness Boruto experiences, while his loyalty to Naruto makes his mentorship more than a technical apprenticeship.

Kawaki, Omnipotence and the rewritten public story
Why Kawaki becomes central
Kawaki enters the Uzumaki household under Naruto’s protection. His past has made him distrustful, and his relationship with Naruto becomes one of the most important bonds in the sequel. Kawaki sees Naruto as the person who gave him a home, while Boruto is both Naruto’s son and a potential vessel for an Ōtsutsuki threat. Those fears put the two boys on a collision course.
What Omnipotence does
Omnipotence causes a reality-wide identity reversal. Public memory now treats Kawaki as Naruto’s son and Boruto as the outsider responsible for Naruto’s disappearance. The change is not ordinary propaganda: people’s recollections and assumptions align around the rewritten story, so Boruto cannot simply prove his identity with a document or a familiar face.
The political consequences are immediate. Konoha regards Boruto as a dangerous fugitive, and the person everyone believes is Naruto’s son occupies the place Boruto once held. Boruto loses his home, his legal and social identity, and the ordinary support network that would let him explain what happened.
The people who remember the truth
Sarada and Sumire are crucial memory anchors. They retain awareness that the public story is false and advocate for Boruto despite the pressure to accept the altered reality. Sarada’s appeal to her father is especially significant because Sasuke initially shares the world’s altered assumptions. Their resistance shows that the conflict is not only about combat; it is about whether personal bonds can survive a rewritten consensus.

Boruto leaves Konoha
After the identity reversal, Boruto leaves the village with Sasuke. Their relationship becomes explicit as teacher and student: Sasuke chooses to trust Boruto even though the altered world tells him that Boruto is the enemy. The departure also gives Boruto time to develop the skills needed to survive pursuit.
Best Value
- Viz Media
- The world’s most popular ninja comic
- Naruto is a young shinobi with an incorrigible knack for mischief.
The gap lasts three years. When Boruto returns, he is more experienced and carries knowledge that most of the world lacks. The village has not restored his name, and Sasuke is absent from Konoha. The story therefore begins with a protagonist who knows the truth but has almost no institutional power to make anyone else believe it.
What changes in Part II
Two Blue Vortex is the post-timeskip continuation illustrated by Mikio Ikemoto. Boruto’s design, combat ability and decision-making reflect the training period, but the central problem remains political: every action he takes is judged through the false identity imposed by Omnipotence.
The title’s starting point is not a clean reset. Naruto’s legacy, Sasuke’s mentorship, Kawaki’s place in the Uzumaki family and Sarada and Sumire’s resistance all carry directly into the new series. Understanding those relationships is more useful than memorizing every earlier fight.
Manga or anime: which route should you choose?
The manga is the shortest route through the serialized canon. The anime offers adaptation breadth, including scenes and episodes beyond the manga, but requires substantially more viewing time. Print, digital and streaming availability varies by territory and date.
| Route | Canon directness | Adaptation breadth | Time commitment | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Naruto manga | Direct source material | Story as serialized by Kishimoto | 700 chapters | Readers who want the complete foundation efficiently |
| Naruto and Shippuden anime | Adaptation of the manga story | Additional scenes and episodes | Substantially longer than the manga | Viewers who prefer performances, music and expanded pacing |
| Boruto manga | Direct route to the sequel’s main serialized plot | More compact than the anime | Not stated in the official overview | Readers prioritizing the Kawaki and Omnipotence storyline |
| Boruto anime | Official adaptation | Broader episode-based storytelling | Substantially longer than the manga | Viewers who want more missions and character time |
| Films and novels | Supplemental context | Expanded material around selected periods | Varies by title | Fans who want additional postwar or next-generation detail |
For a first-time reader with a specific goal of reaching Two Blue Vortex, choose the manga route. For an anime-first viewer, watch the official Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden and Boruto adaptations, then switch to the Part II manga rather than waiting for a universal streaming schedule.
The six facts to remember before chapter one of Part II
- The foundation is complete: Naruto ended in 2014 at 700 chapters.
- Naruto’s arc is about recognition: he moves from ostracized jinchuriki to trusted shinobi and Seventh Hokage.
- Sasuke is now Boruto’s mentor: the former rival’s choice to leave with Boruto creates the direct bridge into Part II.
- Boruto’s identity is the central crisis: he is Naruto’s biological son, but the world has been made to remember Kawaki in that role.
- Sarada and Sumire know the public story is wrong: their memory makes them essential allies and witnesses.
- The timeskip is three years: Boruto returns stronger, while Sasuke is absent from the village and the political reality remains hostile.
Where to start buying or reading
The finished Naruto manga is the clearest physical starting point; a complete box set covers the 700-chapter foundation. Readers who already know the original story can move to collected Two Blue Vortex volumes after catching up on Boruto. VIZ is the licensed English-language route for the manga, and its 2026 update lists Two Blue Vortex volumes 1–6 in print or digital editions. Exact stock, formats and regional rights can change, so check the edition available in your country.
For anime viewing, verify the current catalog in your territory before committing to a service. Official franchise pages confirm the Naruto, Naruto: Shippuden and Boruto anime properties, but they do not establish one provider for every region.
