New to the ninja universe? Start with Naruto. It is the completed foundation for the setting, relationships, and history. If you already know Naruto, read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations from chapter 1 through chapter 80, then begin Boruto: Two Blue Vortex. Two Blue Vortex is a continuation for readers who understand that earlier status quo, not a replacement entry point.

The short answer

Your best starting point depends on what you already know and whether you want a finished story or an active serial.

  • First time in the franchise: read Naruto from chapter 1 through its completed ending.
  • Already familiar with Naruto: read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations through chapter 80 before touching Two Blue Vortex.
  • Want the newest material immediately: Two Blue Vortex is the current destination, but beginning there means accepting missing context and an unfinished release.

This order preserves the progression from the original generation to the next one and then to the current sequel. Skipping directly to the newest title can make later conflicts, loyalties, and changes in the world feel arbitrary even if you recognize the names.

What the three manga are doing

Naruto: the completed foundation

Naruto establishes the universe’s rules, institutions, history, and central relationships. It is also the only option in this group that gives a new reader a fully finished journey in one uninterrupted run. VIZ Media’s current Naruto/Boruto index labels the original series “Latest: Chapter 700.”

That completeness matters beyond convenience. The original series supplies the assumptions that the sequels make about the previous generation, the village, and the consequences of earlier decisions. You can approach it as a self-contained long-form story rather than as homework for another manga.

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations: the bridge

Boruto: Naruto Next Generations shifts attention to the next generation while carrying forward the world readers learned in Naruto. Its role in the reading order is easy to underestimate: it is not optional background if your destination is Two Blue Vortex. VIZ’s index lists this series through chapter 80.

The bridge introduces the status quo that the later sequel assumes. Reading it gives you the emotional and political baseline needed to understand why the opening situation of Two Blue Vortex exists, rather than asking the newer manga to explain years of setup in a few pages.

Boruto: Two Blue Vortex: the active sequel

Two Blue Vortex is the current continuation after the first Boruto series. VIZ’s series page lists chapter 37 with a date of September 17, 2026, so the manga is still in progress. Its own description says: “Boruto is back stronger than ever, but he faces his toughest opponent yet—The Hidden Leaf Village!” That line signals a story built on an established situation, not an introductory premise.

An ongoing series can be exciting because you follow new chapters as they arrive and participate in the conversation around them. It also cannot provide the closure of a completed run, and publication dates or chapter availability can vary by location.

Side-by-side comparison

Scope Long original series, listed by VIZ through chapter 700. Bridge series, listed by VIZ through chapter 80. Current continuation; its chapter total will change as new installments are released.
Primary focus The original generation, their relationships, and the history of the setting. The next generation while showing how the earlier era shapes it. The next phase of the sequel’s conflict and status quo.
Best for A first-time reader or anyone wanting a finished binge. A reader who has finished Naruto and wants the complete setup for the newer sequel. A caught-up reader who wants the latest serial chapters.

The recommended reading order

  1. Read Naruto chapters 1–700. This is the complete original run and your essential orientation to the setting and its history.
  2. Read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations chapters 1–80. Treat this as required bridge material, not as a substitute for the original series.
  3. Start Boruto: Two Blue Vortex with chapter 1. Beginning at its opening chapter lets the sequel establish its changed circumstances in the intended order.

If you have only partial knowledge of Naruto, return to the original series before beginning either sequel. Reading summaries may identify the broad premise, but they will not recreate the relationships and history that the later manga expects you to feel.

Why starting with Naruto works best for newcomers

You learn the vocabulary once

The original series teaches the setting’s terminology, institutions, and social structure while introducing them as part of the story. Later manga can then spend pages on new developments instead of stopping to define every inherited concept. A first-time reader who starts with Two Blue Vortex has to infer those rules from references and reactions.

The emotional stakes have room to develop

Relationships and rivalries carry from one generation to the next. Reading the foundation allows you to see how those bonds form and why the original cast matters before the narrative shifts its attention. This is especially important if your reason for reading the sequels is curiosity about what happened to the established world.

You receive a definite ending

Because Naruto is complete, you can read at your own pace without waiting for a future chapter to resolve the main journey. That makes it the safer choice for readers who dislike catching up to an unfinished story or who want to avoid release gaps between reading sessions.

If you already know Naruto

Do not jump straight to Two Blue Vortex

Knowing the original series answers only the first layer of context. Two Blue Vortex follows the first Boruto series, so its opening assumes that readers understand the situation established there. The bridge is short compared with the original saga, and reading all of it is the most reliable way to avoid confusion.

Use chapter 80 as the handoff point

Finish the listed Boruto: Naruto Next Generations run, then move directly to chapter 1 of Two Blue Vortex. Avoid treating a recap or a chapter synopsis as an equivalent substitute: the sequel’s choices and reversals depend on the sequence in which the bridge presents them.

Expect a change in emphasis

The sequel remains connected to the world you know, but its attention is on the next phase and the next generation. If you are reading primarily for the original cast, your response will depend on how much you enjoy seeing that cast within a newer focus rather than leading every scene.

Can you read Two Blue Vortex without reading Boruto?

You can physically open the first chapter, but it is not the recommended experience. The series is available as a standalone publication in the practical sense that its chapters are numbered and readable; it is not standalone in the narrative sense. The opening depends on the prior Boruto status quo, and the manga does not exist to re-teach all of it for a new audience.

What you are likely to lose

  • Causality: you may see the current situation without understanding the decisions that produced it.
  • Character context: relationships inherited from the bridge series can appear unexplained or reversed.
  • World-state changes: institutions and alliances may be presented as facts rather than introduced developments.
  • Impact: revelations designed to pay off earlier chapters will have less force when their setup is missing.

When a cold start can make sense

A cold start is reasonable only if you want to sample the current artwork and tone, accept spoilers for the earlier series, and are willing to backtrack when the context becomes important. It is a preview strategy, not an efficient full reading order. If you find yourself checking explanations for every chapter, starting at Naruto or at least at the beginning of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations will be faster than reconstructing the timeline piecemeal.

Choosing between a finished binge and a live release

Choose the completed path when closure matters

Read Naruto first, and then decide whether you want to continue into the sequels. This path gives you a complete core story before asking you to follow an active publication. It suits readers who prefer to read several chapters at once, avoid cliffhangers, or plan a fixed-length reading project.

Choose the current path when participation matters

After completing the bridge, begin Two Blue Vortex if you want to read the newest installments as they become available. Following an ongoing manga means accepting that the ending is not published yet and that the latest chapter number will change. The chapter 37 listing dated September 17, 2026 is a snapshot of its status on that date, not a promise of a fixed total.

Use a two-stage plan if you are undecided

Start Naruto and read far enough to decide whether the universe’s style and long-form structure appeal to you. If they do, complete it before moving to the bridge. If they do not, jumping to the newest sequel is unlikely to solve the mismatch because the later series relies on the same accumulated world rather than replacing it with a new-reader format.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Mistake: treating the newest title as a reboot

Two Blue Vortex is a sequel destination. Its title and numbering may look inviting to a reader browsing current releases, but the continuity is deliberate. Start at its first chapter only after completing the preceding Boruto run.

Mistake: stopping the bridge early

Reading only an opening portion of Boruto: Naruto Next Generations gives you an incomplete version of the status quo that the later series inherits. The official index’s endpoint is chapter 80; use that as the handoff rather than an arbitrary stopping point.

Mistake: assuming “complete” means “short”

Naruto is finished, but it is a substantial commitment. Plan regular reading sessions, keep track of your chapter number, and pause between major sections if you need a break. Completion describes publication status, not reading time.

Mistake: relying on unsourced reading-order posts

Fan-made lists can mix manga chapters with adaptations, specials, or recap material. For the core manga order, the simplest reliable sequence is the original completed series, the complete first Boruto series, and then Two Blue Vortex.

How to read legally

VIZ’s Shonen Jump pages provide the official chapter listings and direct readers to MANGA Plus by SHUEISHA for the latest free chapters available in their location. Availability can differ by country, so check the service shown for your region rather than assuming that every chapter has the same access rules everywhere.

VIZ also exposes collected-volume purchase links, including volumes of Two Blue Vortex. Physical editions are useful if you want a stable reread copy or prefer reading away from a screen. Match your purchase to your point in the order: a Naruto volume or box set for the foundation, the Boruto volumes for the bridge, and the available Two Blue Vortex volumes only after that bridge is complete.

A decision checklist

  • Have you read neither series? Begin with Naruto.
  • Have you finished Naruto but not Boruto? Read Boruto: Naruto Next Generations through its listed endpoint before the newer sequel.
  • Have you finished both earlier runs? Start Two Blue Vortex at chapter 1.
  • Do you require a finished ending today? Stay with Naruto; the current sequel is ongoing.
  • Do you want the newest installments and can tolerate waiting? Follow Two Blue Vortex after completing the bridge.
  • Are you mainly interested in the original cast and their history? Give Naruto priority before evaluating the next-generation focus.
  • Are you mainly interested in the next generation? You still need the original series for context, then the complete Boruto bridge before the current sequel.

Bottom line

Naruto is the right starting point for a new reader because it is the completed foundation. Two Blue Vortex is best understood as the third step: first Naruto, then Boruto: Naruto Next Generations through chapter 80, and only then the ongoing sequel. That order costs more reading time up front, but it prevents the missing-context problem that makes a cold start feel harder than it needs to be.
