Naruto is the original coming-of-age story about an ostracized academy student who seeks recognition and dreams of becoming Hokage. Boruto: Naruto Next Generations is the official next-generation sequel, following Naruto’s son in a peaceful, modernized Hidden Leaf Village where the central conflict is no longer proving that an outcast belongs, but establishing an identity beyond a famous parent.

The difference is therefore larger than a change of protagonist. The series move to a new generation, a technologically transformed setting, a different creative arrangement, and a deliberately different approach to antagonists. Naruto is the foundation; Boruto examines what life and shinobi work look like after that foundation has helped create a more stable society.

Is Boruto a sequel to Naruto?

Yes. The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE describes Boruto: Naruto Next Generations as Naruto’s sequel. It is set in the next generation and follows Naruto’s son rather than restarting the original story with a renamed version of the same hero.

Naruto’s manga began in 1999 and concluded in 2014 after 700 chapters. The official franchise overview dates Boruto from 2016 and identifies V Jump as its publication home. Those dates describe publication history, not a claim that every anime episode premiered in exactly the same period or that the two adaptations have matching episode structures.

The sequel relationship matters for three reasons:

  • Continuity: Boruto inherits the world, institutions and consequences established by Naruto.
  • Generational change: The child of the former protagonist becomes the new viewpoint character.
  • Changed baseline: Boruto starts after the village has entered a more peaceful and technologically developed period, so the first problem is not identical to Naruto’s.

You can understand Boruto’s basic premise without knowing every Naruto plot point, but the sequel assumes that the name “Hokage” and Naruto’s place in the village carry emotional and political weight. Watching or reading Naruto first gives that weight context.

The protagonists face opposite recognition problems

Naruto starts outside the circle of acceptance

Naruto’s defining starting point is exclusion. He is an academy outcast who wants the village to recognize him and who connects that desire to becoming Hokage. His ambition is both a public career goal and a personal answer to being overlooked.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That setup makes upward movement the engine of the original story. Naruto has to earn trust, demonstrate ability and change other people’s assumptions. Recognition is something he does not possess at the beginning, so progress can be measured by the people and institutions that gradually acknowledge him.

Boruto starts with recognition he did not earn himself

Boruto enters the story as the Hokage’s son. Other people already know his family name, which creates a problem opposite to Naruto’s. Instead of asking how an ignored child can become visible, the sequel asks how a highly visible child can be seen as an individual.

The official setup describes Boruto as wanting recognition as a shinobi while living in his father’s shadow. His challenge is not simply to gain status; it is to separate personal ability and personal choices from an inherited reputation. A reader who expects another outcast-to-leader narrative may therefore find the sequel’s emotional starting point unfamiliar even though the setting is connected.

Why the family relationship changes the drama

Naruto’s goal is directed toward the village and its approval. Boruto’s conflict includes a close comparison with one person whose achievements define the village: his father. That creates pressure that is social, professional and domestic at the same time. Boruto can be recognized immediately and still feel unseen, because the recognition may be for the Hokage’s son rather than for Boruto himself.

The two premises can be reduced to a useful contrast: Naruto must prove that an outsider belongs; Boruto must prove that a famous insider is more than a surname.

The Hidden Leaf is no longer the same kind of place

Naruto’s baseline

The original series begins from the perspective of a young ninja in a village and a wider shinobi system that still feels traditional and difficult. Naruto’s early premise emphasizes a struggling student, training and the pursuit of a respected leadership position.

Technology and ordinary civilian life are not presented as the headline condition of that opening premise. The story’s pressure comes primarily from social exclusion, skill development and the demands placed on young shinobi.

Boruto’s modernized village

The official anime synopsis presents Boruto’s Hidden Leaf as peaceful and modernized. It specifically points to skyscrapers, large screens and trains, and says that shinobi must adapt to changing times.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

These details are more than visual decoration. They establish a society in which the shinobi profession exists alongside infrastructure and public technology. The village is not depicted as a timeless battlefield; it is a functioning urban community whose residents have civilian routines, transportation and mass communication. That changes what “being a ninja” means and what kinds of skills the next generation may need.

Modern does not mean that every story is about technology

It is too broad to say that all of Boruto is a technology story. The official synopsis uses modernization to explain the era and the need for adaptation. It does not establish that every conflict is technological or that traditional shinobi concerns disappear.

A more accurate comparison is that Naruto introduces a traditional shinobi world as the normal background, while Boruto makes social and technological change part of the background that the characters must navigate. The sequel’s question is how an inherited profession survives when the surrounding society has changed.

The creators’ roles changed substantially

Kishimoto’s role on Naruto

Masashi Kishimoto created Naruto and says he handled its story and main illustrations. The official interview also describes Mikio Ikemoto’s assistance with backgrounds and shadow clones during Naruto’s production.

That arrangement makes Kishimoto the central creative author of the original manga’s narrative and visual foundation. Naruto’s characters, setting and long-form story structure were established under his direct control.

Ikemoto’s role on Boruto

For Boruto, Kishimoto says that Ikemoto is completely in charge of the story and main illustrations. The official credits identify Kishimoto as supervisor and Ikemoto as the manga artist. In Kishimoto’s own words, “For Boruto, Ikemoto is completely in charge of the story and main illustrations. It really is Ikemoto’s manga.”

This is not merely a staff-credit technicality. It explains why Boruto should be read as a new creative phase rather than as Naruto continuing under exactly the same authorship. The sequel is supervised by the original creator, but its story and principal manga art are led by Ikemoto.

What the change means for readers

Readers may notice differences in emphasis, pacing, visual presentation and the way new conflicts are framed. Those differences do not invalidate the sequel’s continuity. They reflect a handoff in primary creative responsibility inside the same franchise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kishimoto also said that the core expectations of shonen manga have not changed. His statement, “So I believe at its core, what’s expected of a shonen manga hasn’t changed,” helps explain the balance: Boruto can alter its era, protagonist and creator-led approach while retaining the broad action-adventure expectations associated with the genre.

The series approach antagonists differently

Naruto’s enemies are built around purpose and belief

In the interview, Ikemoto describes Naruto’s enemies as having their own purposes and beliefs, with their backstories explored extensively. That approach gives antagonists an internal logic that can be examined alongside the heroes’ goals.

For the reader, the result is a conflict structure in which opposing characters may represent competing answers to questions about identity, loyalty, power or society. Their motivations are part of the story’s subject, not just a reason for the next fight.

Boruto’s stated move toward unreasonable obstacles

Ikemoto says he intentionally went in the opposite direction for Boruto, creating “unreasonable antagonists” and obstacles that must be challenged and overcome for the sake of human life itself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The important qualification is that this is a statement of creative intent. It should not be converted into a universal claim that every Boruto antagonist lacks motivation or that every Naruto antagonist is sympathetic. The useful distinction is structural: Naruto emphasizes enemies whose purposes and beliefs are explored, while Ikemoto describes Boruto as deliberately introducing threats that function more directly as extreme obstacles to human survival.

How to use this distinction when choosing a series

  • Choose Naruto if you want antagonistic conflicts that are more often explained through personal purpose, ideology and backstory.
  • Choose Boruto if you are interested in a sequel that uses more immediately unreasonable threats as tests of whether the new generation can protect human life.
  • Read both if you want to see how the same fictional world supports two different theories of what an antagonist contributes to a shonen story.

The themes overlap, but the questions change

Theme Naruto’s emphasis Boruto’s emphasis
Recognition An outsider seeks acknowledgment and connects it to becoming Hokage. A famous leader’s son seeks recognition as an individual shinobi.
Inheritance The story follows Naruto’s effort to build a place for himself. The story asks how the next generation lives with a legacy already attached to its name.
Society The young hero confronts a village that does not initially accept him. The young hero grows up in a village that is more peaceful, urbanized and technologically equipped.
Adaptation Training and personal growth are central to entering the shinobi world. The official premise explicitly says shinobi must adapt to changing times.
Conflict Opposing purposes and beliefs are a major part of how enemies are framed, according to Ikemoto’s comparison. Ikemoto describes a deliberate move toward unreasonable obstacles threatening human life.

The themes are connected because Boruto inherits Naruto’s world, but they are not interchangeable. Naruto’s central emotional movement is from exclusion toward recognition. Boruto’s is from inherited recognition toward an independent identity.

Publication, manga and anime are separate comparisons

What the publication record establishes

The official Naruto overview establishes that the original manga ran in Weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 until its 2014 conclusion and reached 700 chapters. It also reports more than 250 million print copies sold globally; the page does not attach a separate publication year to that sales figure.

The same overview identifies Boruto as the sequel and dates it from 2016. It identifies V Jump as the sequel’s publication home. These are source-manga facts, not a complete accounting of anime episodes, anime-original material or current publication totals.

What the anime information establishes

The official Boruto anime page presents the anime as a separate adaptation, credits Studio Pierrot for animation production, and lists Kishimoto as writer/supervisor and Ikemoto as manga artist in the related manga credit.

Streaming availability is regional. A service that carries an episode in one country may not carry it in another, and the official page itself cautions that availability varies by region. Because no country is specified here, a universal streaming list would be unreliable.

Why episode comparisons are avoided

The available publication figure for Naruto is a chapter count. It does not establish a matched episode count, a complete split between anime-only and manga-canon episodes, or a country-by-country catalogue for either anime. Comparing the series by source-supported premise, setting and creative roles is more accurate than treating manga chapters and television episodes as equivalent units.

Do you need to watch Naruto before Boruto?

For the clearest story context: start with Naruto

Watching or reading Naruto first is the best order if you want to understand why Naruto’s position as Hokage matters, how the Hidden Leaf reached its more peaceful era, and why Boruto’s family name creates pressure. The sequel’s emotional premise depends on that history even when an individual scene can be understood on its own.

For a quick test of Boruto’s premise: you can begin with Boruto

Boruto introduces a new lead and a new generation, so a newcomer can follow its basic setup: Boruto is the Hokage’s son, the village is modernized, and shinobi must adapt. Starting there is reasonable if your immediate interest is the next generation rather than the complete origin story.

A practical order for different time budgets

  2. Character-first sampling: Read or watch the opening of Boruto to decide whether its generational premise appeals to you, then return to Naruto for the background.
  3. Manga-focused comparison: Compare Naruto’s completed 700-chapter run with Boruto’s source manga, keeping anime-only material out of the comparison.
  4. Anime-focused viewing: Check the current catalogue in your country for each series, because availability varies by region and cannot be assumed globally.

Which series should you choose?

An underdog story about earning acceptance Naruto Naruto begins as an academy outcast seeking recognition and the Hokage title.

A peaceful, urbanized setting Boruto The official synopsis highlights skyscrapers, large screens, trains and changing shinobi work.
Antagonists with explored purposes and beliefs Naruto That is how Ikemoto characterizes the original series’ antagonist approach.

A 2026 companion guide for readers who want a recap

The NARUTO OFFICIAL SITE announced a physical Boruto: Naruto Next Generations Story Guide “Before the Reversal” for release on June 4, 2026, Japan Standard Time. The announcement lists 596 pages and a Japanese-market price of ¥1,650 including tax. It focuses mainly on the manga and includes a double-sided poster.

This is an optional recap resource, not a replacement for the original Naruto series. The announcement does not establish an English-language edition, stock outside Japan, an Amazon listing or availability in any particular country. Check the edition and market before trying to buy it.

Common misconceptions to avoid

“Boruto is just Naruto with a new name”

No. The protagonist’s social position is reversed, the village has modernized, the primary manga creator is different, and the stated antagonist strategy changes. Boruto is connected to Naruto but has a distinct narrative premise.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“Naruto and Boruto have the same creator arrangement”

Kishimoto led Naruto’s story and main illustrations. For Boruto, Ikemoto leads the story and main illustrations while Kishimoto supervises. Treating those roles as identical erases an important reason the sequel has its own voice.

“Boruto’s modernization means every plot is about gadgets”

The official anime synopsis uses technology and urban development to describe the era and the need for shinobi to adapt. It does not say that every conflict is technological.

“The 700 chapters are the total for both series”

The 700-chapter figure refers to the original Naruto manga, which concluded in 2014. It is not a combined Naruto-and-Boruto total and not an anime episode count.

“The antagonist contrast applies without exception”

Ikemoto’s comments describe a creative direction: Naruto’s enemies are characterized as having purposes and beliefs, while Boruto moves toward unreasonable obstacles. That comparison should be presented as his stated intent, not as a classification of every individual villain.

Bottom line: a legacy story rather than a repeat

Naruto is the story of an outsider who wants recognition and the Hokage title. Boruto is the story of the next generation, led by a boy who already has recognition through his father but wants an identity of his own. The sequel also moves into a peaceful, modernized Hidden Leaf, changes the primary manga creative leadership from Kishimoto to Ikemoto under Kishimoto’s supervision, and intentionally approaches antagonists differently.

Start with Naruto if you want the emotional and historical foundation. Start with Boruto if the idea of a Hokage’s son growing up in a transformed village is the part that interests you most. Reading both in order gives the clearest view of how the franchise turns one hero’s hard-won legacy into another generation’s burden.
