For a manga-main-story watch, skip the pure-filler episode ranges below and keep the mixed canon/filler episodes. Mixed episodes can contain story material alongside anime-original scenes, so skipping one wholesale may leave a gap. Episode 28 is classified separately as anime canon: it is optional if you want only manga-adapted plot, but worth keeping if you want anime-original story too.
Pure filler episodes to skip
For a route focused on the manga-derived main plot, these are the episodes Anime Filler List classifies as filler. The ranges are inclusive: for example, 57–71 means skip every episode from 57 through 71.

Those ranges add up to 203 episodes. Use the specific ranges rather than relying only on a headline filler count: episode guides do not report exactly the same total, and their classifications are guide conventions rather than an official ruling on what every viewer must treat as canon.

Do not treat “mixed canon/filler” as a synonym for pure filler. A mixed episode combines manga-related story content with anime-only scenes. If your priority is continuity, watch the whole episode; a skip list alone cannot reliably separate its original material from the plot-relevant parts.
#1 Best Overall
Anime Filler List labels these episodes as mixed canon/filler:
- 1–19, 24–25, 45, 49–50, 54, 56
- 89–90, 113, 115, 127–128
- 213, 254, 296
- 324, 327–328, 330–331, 338, 346
- 362, 385–386, 415, 419, 426
- 451–458, 460–462, 469, 471–472, 478–479
Episode 28 has a different label: anime canon. It is not classified as filler by Anime Filler List, but it is anime-original rather than part of the manga-adapted plot. Leave it in for an anime-original story; omit it if you are applying a strict manga-only filter.

Choose the watch plan that fits your goal
| Plan | What to watch | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Main-story fast route | Watch manga-canon and mixed episodes. Skip the pure-filler ranges above. Choose separately whether to watch anime-canon episode 28. | Viewers who want the manga-derived plot with as few anime-original detours as possible. |
| Balanced route | Follow the main-story route, then add anime-original arcs that interest you. | Viewers who want plot continuity but are open to character-focused side stories. |
| Completionist route | Watch all 500 episodes in order. | Viewers who want the full series experience, including anime-original material. |
There is no single “best” route for every fan. Decide based on three things: whether you want manga-plot continuity, whether anime-original character stories appeal to you, and how much time you want to spend. A filler label means material sits outside the manga main plot; it is not a judgment that the episode is poor or not worth watching.
How to use the list without losing your place
- Start with your viewing goal. For manga-main-story continuity, use the fast route and retain mixed episodes. If you want the whole anime, watch in broadcast order instead of using a skip list.
- Check the episode number before skipping. Compare the episode you are about to watch with the inclusive ranges in the table. If its number falls inside a listed range, it is classified as pure filler in this guide.
- Do not skip a mixed episode as a block. The mixed category may include a relevant story beat as well as anime-original scenes. Keeping the episode is the conservative choice when you do not want to risk a continuity gap.
- Make an explicit choice about episode 28. Keep it for anime-original story, or leave it out for a manga-only route. Its separate anime-canon label is why it does not appear in the pure-filler table.
- Resume at the next unlisted episode. After a filler range ends, continue with the next episode number unless that number begins another listed range. For example, after skipping 57–71, resume at 72.
This approach is useful whether you watch from an episode list, a downloaded collection, or physical media. Episode numbering is the key: check that the service or release you use follows the same 500-episode series numbering, especially if it divides the show into seasons or volumes.

What “filler” means here—and what it does not
In this guide, filler means anime-original story material that does not adapt the manga’s main plot. Mixed canon/filler means a single episode contains manga-story content alongside extra anime-only scenes. Anime canon is a further distinction used by Anime Filler List for an anime-original story that is not simply assigned to the filler category.
These labels help viewers make a practical choice, but they are not an official franchise decree or a universal answer to every continuity debate. Guides can differ in how they categorize an episode, including material that draws on supplementary sources or expands on the manga. If your goal is simply to follow the core manga-derived plot, the pure-filler ranges provide a usable route; if you want every anime story, watch everything and treat the labels as optional guidance.

Why filler totals differ between guides
Anime Filler List reports that Naruto: Shippuden ran from 2007 to 2017 and has 500 episodes. Its page, updated September 3, 2024, reports 203 filler episodes, or 41%, and separately categorizes manga canon, mixed canon/filler, filler, and anime canon. The 20 pure-filler ranges above match that guide’s episode classifications and sum to 203.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Digital Citizen’s guide dated January 12, 2026 describes around 204 episodes as pure filler. The one-episode difference is a reason not to present a single count as universally settled. Classification choices can differ between guides, so use a named guide’s stated method and episode list rather than combining totals from different sources. The episode ranges are more actionable than the percentage when you are deciding what to watch next.
Best Value
Digital Citizen also distinguishes mixed episodes from pure filler and outlines fast, balanced, and completionist viewing approaches. That distinction matters more than a one-episode change in the tally: skipping a mixed episode entirely can remove plot-related material, while skipping a pure-filler block preserves the intended manga-main-story route.
Are any filler arcs worth watching?
That depends on taste rather than plot necessity. Anime-original arcs can provide additional character-focused stories, but the skip classification does not measure their quality. GamesRadar’s January 16, 2026 article recommends the Kakashi: Shadow of the ANBU Black Ops arc as an optional extra. Treat that as an editorial recommendation, not as evidence that the arc is required to understand the manga-derived plot.
A practical compromise is to keep a note of optional arcs you may want to revisit. First complete the main-story route if continuity is your priority; then return to anime-original material when you have time or want more of the characters. If you already enjoy a particular side story, there is no need to skip it just because a guide calls it filler.
Series length and physical releases
The series has 500 episodes according to Anime Filler List. A historical episode overview records a North American DVD release in 2009, but that does not establish that a particular box set is currently available, complete, or compatible with your region and preferred language. If you are considering a physical release, verify the exact listing’s region, language, episode coverage, seller, and current availability before buying.
