To change Narrator’s Math reading in Windows 11, cycle its punctuation modes with Narrator + Alt + ] until it announces “Math.” Math is not one of Narrator’s five verbosity levels: punctuation controls how symbols are read, while verbosity controls how much detail Narrator speaks about text and controls.

Turn on Math punctuation reading

  1. If Narrator is not running, press Windows logo + Ctrl + Enter to start it. In Narrator shortcuts, “Narrator” means the Narrator key configured on your device, usually Caps Lock or Insert. See Microsoft’s keyboard commands and touch gestures.

  2. Press Narrator + Alt + ] repeatedly to cycle forward through punctuation modes. Stop when Narrator announces Math. To cycle backward, press Narrator + Alt + [.

The punctuation modes are Default, Math, Some, Most, and All. Microsoft describes Math as a mode to “Hear most mathematical symbols.” It is useful when you want mathematical symbols spoken, but it does not change Narrator’s descriptive verbosity. See Microsoft’s guide to reading text.

Change Narrator’s separate verbosity level

If you meant “verbosity level” literally, use Narrator’s verbosity control instead. Microsoft defines it as how descriptive Narrator is about what it is reading. You can change it in Settings or use a keyboard shortcut; neither method selects Math punctuation mode.

Choose a level in Narrator settings

  1. Press Windows logo + Ctrl + N to open Narrator settings.

Can you change Math reading with touch?

On supported touch devices, tapping once with three fingers changes Narrator verbosity. Microsoft does not document that gesture as a way to select Math punctuation mode. To choose Math, use the punctuation keyboard shortcut. See Microsoft’s Narrator touch guide.

Which Narrator control should you use?

If you want to… Use…
Hear most mathematical symbols Punctuation mode: cycle until Narrator announces Math
Hear more or fewer details about text and controls Verbosity level: choose a level from 1 to 5 or adjust it with its shortcut

Narrator is built into Windows 11; Microsoft says there is nothing to download or install. Its complete Narrator guide covers the feature. Shortcut behavior and labels may change in future Windows releases.
