Short answer: the leading current interpretation is that Nanotyrannus was not simply a young Tyrannosaurus rex. A 2025 analysis in Nature concluded that Nanotyrannus is distinguishable from Tyrannosaurus, falls outside Tyrannosauridae, and represents two species, N. lancensis and N. lethaeus. Scientists reach that conclusion by testing maturity and anatomy together: bone microstructure, skeletal fusion, growth trajectories, skull construction, tooth patterns and evolutionary relationships. No single feature, including size or tooth count, settles the identification.

The current scientific position

The newest major analysis, published in Nature in 2025, treats Nanotyrannus as a valid tyrannosaur separate from Tyrannosaurus rex. Its authors combined comparative anatomy, longitudinal growth models, ontogenetic character analysis, bone microstructure and a phylogenetic dataset built from firsthand examination of 120 tyrannosaur specimens. The resulting analysis places Nanotyrannus outside Tyrannosauridae and outside the Tyrannosaurus lineage.

The study recognizes two species: Nanotyrannus lancensis, the name historically associated with the Cleveland skull, and Nanotyrannus lethaeus. Princeton University’s summary of the work likewise describes the small skull as belonging to a full-grown animal rather than a juvenile T. rex.

This is the current leading conclusion, not a claim that every specialist has always agreed. The classification changed several times because the fossils are incomplete, the sample is small and some developmental evidence has been interpreted in opposite ways. The useful question is therefore not “Is it small?” but “Does its anatomy show an immature T. rex, or a mature animal with a different evolutionary history?”

Why the identity was controversial

The dispute centers on the Cleveland Museum of Natural History skull, catalogued as CMNH 7541, and related small tyrannosaur specimens. When first treated as a separate animal, the material was called Nanotyrannus lancensis. Many later workers argued that the skull was a young Tyrannosaurus because it shares broad features with T. rex and comes from rocks of the same general Late Cretaceous interval.

The juvenile interpretation became influential for two reasons. First, tyrannosaur skulls and teeth changed substantially as the animals grew, so a young individual can look unlike an adult. Second, large predators are often represented by fewer young fossils than adults, making it easy to mistake a growth stage for a separate species. Features proposed as evidence for Nanotyrannus could therefore be developmental differences rather than taxonomic ones.

A 2020 osteohistology study intensified the debate. It reported bone microstructure associated with active juvenile growth and supported synonymizing “Nanotyrannus” with Tyrannosaurus. In that interpretation, the Cleveland skull represented a growing animal that would eventually have become a giant adult T. rex.

The 2025 analysis reaches the opposite conclusion by integrating histology with growth modeling, skeletal anatomy and phylogeny. The disagreement illustrates why scientists do not identify a tyrannosaur from one striking skull feature or from body size alone.

How scientists test whether a small tyrannosaur is mature

1. Bone histology and growth rings

Researchers can remove tiny samples from weight-bearing bones and examine thin sections under a microscope. The tissue records how quickly the animal deposited bone. Vascular, rapidly deposited tissue generally indicates active growth; increasingly organized tissue and closely spaced lines can indicate that growth was slowing; a mature outer layer may show that the animal had approached its final size.

This method is powerful because it tests physiological age rather than simply comparing dimensions. It also has limits. Different bones can grow at different rates, preservation can be uneven and a single section may not represent the entire skeleton. Sampling location and interpretation therefore matter.

The 2020 study interpreted relevant specimens as actively growing juvenile T. rex. The 2025 analysis interpreted the Nanotyrannus material as mature or near-mature. Those are competing readings of developmental evidence, not merely different estimates of body length.

2. Skeletal fusion and developmental anatomy

During growth, vertebrae and other bones may develop and fuse in a predictable sequence. Scientists inspect the degree of fusion, the texture of the bone surface and the shape of joints for signs of immaturity or completed development.

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History identifies full growth of the holotype skull as the key point in its interpretation: if the skull had reached adult dimensions and showed mature construction, it would not be a juvenile T. rex. Fusion evidence is strongest when several elements tell the same story. A single unfused joint does not automatically prove youth because fusion can vary between bones and individuals.

3. Growth curves and predicted adult size

A juvenile T. rex should fit a growth trajectory that leads toward the enormous adult form known from mature specimens. Researchers therefore plot measurements from multiple individuals against estimated ages, then test whether the small specimens can plausibly continue along the same curve.

The 2024 review The Taxonomic Status of Nanotyrannus summarizes growth-curve predictions that would have produced adult masses of about 1,500 kilograms or less for the proposed Nanotyrannus specimens. The 2025 Nature study reports mature Nanotyrannus estimates of roughly 700–1,000 kilograms. These figures are study-specific model outputs, not universal weights for every individual or a substitute for direct measurement.

The key test is the shape of the curve. A separate species can show slower, decelerating growth and stop at a smaller adult size, whereas a juvenile T. rex should eventually converge on the growth pattern of large adult Tyrannosaurus. Models are sensitive to the ages assigned to fossils and to which specimens are grouped together, so they are evaluated alongside anatomy.

4. Skull architecture

Skull comparisons involve a character combination rather than one visual shortcut. Studies discuss the position and degree of concealment of the promaxillary and maxillary fenestrae, the shape of the maxilla, the form of the lacrimal horn, proportions of the orbit, breadth of the jugal, curvature of the orbital bar and features of the skull roof.

These structures change during tyrannosaur growth, which is why an apparent difference must be tested against a series of specimens. A character is more persuasive when it remains distinct after accounting for size and development, appears in more than one individual and fits a broader anatomical pattern.

In practice, scientists score dozens of skull and skeleton characters. They ask whether the small skull occupies a transitional position inside the known T. rex growth series or whether it forms a coherent separate cluster with its own combination of traits.

5. Dentition

Tooth arrangement has been central to the argument. Proposed Nanotyrannus specimens have been described as having more tooth positions than typical adult T. rex, along with relatively large anterior maxillary teeth and other dental differences. The Australian Museum lists a higher tooth count as one historical argument for separating the animals.

Tooth count alone is not decisive. Tyrannosaurids can alter tooth number and spacing during growth, and replacement teeth may be missing or obscured in a fossil. Wear, breakage and incomplete jaws can also create misleading counts. Dental evidence becomes useful when it agrees with skull architecture, maturity indicators and the growth model.

6. Phylogenetic placement

Phylogenetic analysis tests relationships across many characters at once. Researchers code anatomical features for a broad sample, then calculate the evolutionary trees that best explain their distribution. This approach asks whether the small tyrannosaur nests within Tyrannosaurus or branches elsewhere.

The 2025 study’s combined character matrix places Nanotyrannus outside Tyrannosauridae and separates it from the Tyrannosaurus lineage. That result is important because it is independent of a simple “small versus large” comparison: a fossil can be smaller for many reasons, but a consistent evolutionary position reflects its total character pattern.

Evidence compared at a glance

Evidence type What a juvenile T. rex prediction would require How the Nanotyrannus interpretation is evaluated Main caution
Bone histology Rapidly growing tissue and developmental patterns consistent with a young animal Mature or near-mature microstructure in the relevant specimens according to the 2025 analysis Results depend on bone sampled, sampling location and interpretation
Skeletal fusion Unfinished fusion and other juvenile anatomy Fusion and mature texture consistent with an animal near or at adult development Fusion timing varies among bones and individuals
Growth modeling A curve that continues toward the very large adult T. rex body plan Slower, decelerating growth and a smaller mature size in published models Predictions depend on age assignments and specimen selection
Skull architecture Differences that disappear as the skull grows A persistent combination of fenestra, maxilla, lacrimal, orbit, jugal and skull-roof characters No single skull feature is diagnostic by itself
Dentition Tooth count and shape changing through growth Higher tooth-position counts and distinctive tooth proportions in proposed specimens Tooth number can vary during growth and preservation can hide teeth
Phylogeny Small specimens nested within Tyrannosaurus Nanotyrannus outside Tyrannosauridae in the 2025 combined analysis Results depend on character coding and taxon sampling

What the 2025 analysis added

The major advance was integration. Earlier arguments often emphasized one category, such as tooth counts or histology. The 2025 work combined several independent tests and examined 120 tyrannosaur specimens firsthand for its phylogenetic dataset. It also used longitudinal growth models and ontogenetic character analysis, allowing the authors to distinguish traits that change with age from traits that separate lineages.

Its conclusion is not that every small tyrannosaur in a museum drawer belongs to Nanotyrannus. Identification remains specimen-specific. Instead, the analysis argues that the named Nanotyrannus material forms a mature, anatomically coherent group that cannot be explained as juvenile members of T. rex.

A practical identification workflow

When a new small tyrannosaur specimen is discovered, a responsible identification would proceed in stages rather than jumping from size to a name.

  1. Document the specimen and its geology. Record the element, locality, rock unit, stratigraphic position and preservation. Geological context constrains which species could have lived there but does not identify the animal by itself.
  2. Assess completeness and distortion. Photograph and scan the bones, correct for crushing where possible and mark which measurements are reliable. A distorted skull can create artificial differences in fenestra position or orbital shape.
  3. Test maturity. Examine bone microstructure, surface texture, vertebral fusion and joint development. The first decision is whether the animal was still growing rapidly, approaching maturity or fully mature.
  4. Measure the growth fit. Compare dimensions with documented Tyrannosaurus growth trajectories and with models proposed for Nanotyrannus. Check whether the specimen can reach the adult size and proportions expected for either hypothesis without an implausible growth rate.
  5. Score the anatomy. Record skull, jaw, tooth, vertebral and limb characters in a standardized matrix. Use the complete combination, not a single tooth row or horn.
  6. Run a phylogenetic analysis. Include close tyrannosaur relatives and test whether the specimen consistently nests with Tyrannosaurus, with Nanotyrannus or elsewhere. Re-run analyses with reasonable changes in coding and taxon sampling to identify unstable results.

Only after these steps should researchers decide whether a specimen extends a known growth series, represents a distinct species or is too incomplete for a confident assignment.

Why size alone fails

Body size is an observation, not a diagnosis. A juvenile of a giant species can be smaller than an adult of a smaller species, and sexual or individual variation can widen the overlap. Fossils may also represent different body regions or be distorted by burial.

Size becomes informative when combined with a mature growth signal and a matching anatomical package. If a small skull is fully grown, has a distinctive set of jaw and orbital characters, carries a separate tooth pattern and occupies a different branch on an evolutionary tree, the “young T. rex” explanation must account for all of those observations at once.

How to interpret the 2020 and 2025 studies together

The 2020 osteohistological result should not be dismissed simply because a newer paper reached a different taxonomic conclusion. It provides a clear example of how bone tissue can support the juvenile hypothesis when interpreted as active growth. The 2025 analysis instead argues that the relevant specimens show maturity or near-maturity when histology is considered with skeletal anatomy, growth models and phylogeny.

Conflicting studies can arise from different specimens, sampled bones, age models, character definitions and assumptions about which fossils belong to the same growth series. The scientific issue is therefore testable: additional well-preserved specimens, especially those combining diagnostic skulls with histologically sampled limb bones, can strengthen or weaken either interpretation.

What “two species” means

Under the 2025 classification, N. lancensis and N. lethaeus are separate species within Nanotyrannus. Species-level naming requires more than finding two sizes. The taxa must show repeatable differences that are not better explained by age, sex, deformation or individual variation, and those differences must fit an evolutionary analysis.

The names should therefore be applied cautiously to incomplete fossils. A partial jaw with a high tooth count may be consistent with Nanotyrannus, but without enough anatomy or developmental evidence it may not be possible to assign it confidently to one of the two species.

What remains uncertain

  • The fossil record contains gaps, so the growth series for both Tyrannosaurus and Nanotyrannus is not continuous.
  • Histological interpretations can differ with the bone chosen, the section examined and the criteria used for maturity.
  • Growth models produce estimates rather than direct adult weights and can change when new specimens or revised ages are added.
  • Some skull characters vary during development, making ontogenetic analysis essential.
  • Phylogenetic results can be sensitive to how characters are coded and which tyrannosaur relatives are included.

These limits do not make the question unanswerable. They explain why the strongest conclusion comes from agreement among independent lines of evidence rather than from a single measurement.

Bottom line for identifying the fossils

According to the leading 2025 analysis, Nanotyrannus is a distinct tyrannosaur lineage, represented by N. lancensis and N. lethaeus, rather than a juvenile stage of Tyrannosaurus rex. Scientists distinguish them by asking whether the small animal was mature, whether its growth trajectory matches T. rex, whether its skull and teeth form a persistent character combination and where it falls in a phylogenetic tree. Size, tooth count or one unusual skull feature can suggest a hypothesis, but the diagnosis depends on the whole anatomical and developmental record.
