To install NanoClaw on a freshly reimaged Linux server, first reinstall the operating system using the method for that machine or hosting provider, then clone NanoClaw’s official repository and run bash nanoclaw.sh. If the server already holds NanoClaw data, back up the state you need before wiping it: the project’s reviewed documentation does not provide a complete operating-system reimage restore checklist, and a fresh install should not be treated as a restore.
Before reimaging: decide whether you need a clean install or a recovery
An operating-system reimage replaces the host environment and can remove its local files and configuration. Decide which situation applies before proceeding:
- New or disposable host: If there is no NanoClaw state to preserve, reinstall the OS and follow the fresh-install steps below.
- Existing NanoClaw host: Inventory the data and access you need, and arrange backups before the wipe. The current official instructions reviewed here do not establish a comprehensive list of files, databases, credentials, or service settings required to restore an installation after an OS reimage. Do not assume that installing NanoClaw again will recover them.
The documented install supports Linux but does not require a particular server vendor. Whether this is a physical server or a hosted Linux instance determines how you reinstall its OS and back up its data; NanoClaw’s setup instructions do not prescribe a boot USB, external drive, or hosting provider.
Reinstall the operating system and check NanoClaw’s requirements
Use the reimage procedure for your server or hosting service, and confirm that you can access the new Linux system and run commands in a shell. The NanoClaw repository README lists Node.js 22 or newer, pnpm 10 or newer, and Docker Engine for Linux. It also says the installer can install Node, pnpm, and Docker when they are missing. Check the README for the exact checkout or release you plan to install.

There is a requirements discrepancy: NanoClaw’s public website lists Node.js 20 or newer, while the repository README lists 22 or newer. For a specific installation, follow the current README and installer guidance in the repository checkout rather than combining the two minimums into one claim.
The reviewed installation documentation does not specify minimum CPU, memory, storage, or bandwidth. Do not infer a server size from the setup steps; consult release-specific guidance if you need capacity requirements.

Install NanoClaw on the clean Linux host
In a shell on the reimaged server, run the repository’s quick-start commands:

bash nanoclaw.shThe README describes the installer as handling missing core dependencies, configuring the credential gateway, building the agent container, and guiding you through pairing an initial messaging channel. Follow its prompts and the instructions for the release you have checked out. The README also lists Claude Code for certain workflows, including /customize, /debug, setup error recovery, and channel skills; it is not listed as a prerequisite for the basic shell commands above.

If the old installation is NanoClaw v1, use the separate migration path
A v1-to-v2 migration is an application migration, not a general OS-reimage restore procedure. The official migration instructions say to create a fresh v2 checkout next to the v1 installation and run bash migrate-v2.sh. The script is documented to merge .env, seed the v2 database from registered_groups, copy group folders, session data, scheduled tasks, and selected channel authentication, and build the agent container.
Run the migration script directly, not from inside a Claude session. It leaves the v1 installation untouched and does not switch the system service automatically. Test the v2 setup before choosing the service-switch prompt or switching manually. These steps apply to the documented v1-to-v2 migration; they do not establish which host data must be saved or restored after an operating-system wipe.

Understand the container security boundary after setup
NanoClaw’s security documentation describes per-session containers, non-root execution, and explicit filesystem mounts. It says the host project root and .env are not mounted into agent containers, and that real credentials are injected through a gateway rather than written into container files or environment variables. The documentation says a configured gateway is needed for sessions.

Egress lockdown is optional and is off by default in the reviewed security documentation. Setting NANOCLAW_EGRESS_LOCKDOWN=true disables agents’ direct internet route so they must use the gateway. Treat this as a deliberate security configuration, not an automatic feature of every fresh installation. Container isolation does not replace host backups, OS patching, or careful review of mounts: mounts determine what an agent can access, and extra mounts require operator-side allowlisting.
Review what you run
The NanoClaw project README says: “You should still review what you’re running, but the codebase is small enough that you actually can.” Review the code and configuration for the release you install, especially the permissions and mounts you choose for your environment.
