NanoClaw separates an agent’s workspace from the chat channel that reaches it: an agent group holds the agent’s workspace and configuration, a messaging group represents a platform chat, and a wiring connects the two. The ncl command-line tool manages these objects and other system resources; it is not a billing console. NanoClaw’s documentation does not state one universal charge for inference. Your model provider, selected model, and serving speed determine whether model calls incur provider charges.
How NanoClaw represents groups
NanoClaw is self-hosted software that routes messages through users, messaging groups, agent groups, and sessions, with agents running in local containers. The project README lists macOS or Linux (Windows through WSL2), Node.js 22+, pnpm 10+, and Docker as requirements. See the NanoClaw project README for current setup details.

These are distinct resources in the current CLI, not interchangeable meanings of “group.” The repository marks its earlier v1 specification as historical; v2 uses a different entity model. Use the current documentation and installed CLI help rather than assuming the older model still applies.

A group created from a template is not automatically connected to a messaging channel. After creating or stamping the agent group, use channel management or create a wiring. The template instructions explicitly describe wiring as a follow-up operation; see the group creation guide.

What the ncl CLI can do
The project documents ncl as an administrative interface for querying and modifying NanoClaw’s central database. Its general command shape is ncl <resource> <verb> [<id>] [--flags]. Run ncl help or resource-level help on your installation to check supported syntax and flags; CLI behavior can change between versions. The documented resources include groups, wirings, users, roles, members, destinations, sessions, scheduled tasks, approvals, and dropped messages.
Common group and wiring commands
ncl groups listlists agent groups.ncl groups get <group-id>shows one group.ncl groups config get --id <group-id>reads supported group configuration.ncl groups config update --id <group-id> ...changes supported configuration. Use the installed version’s help to identify valid options.ncl groups restart --id <group-id>restarts a group. The project reference documents optional--rebuildand--messageflags; confirm their availability in local help.ncl wirings listlists connections;ncl wirings create ...creates one using the syntax supported by your version.

Where the command runs affects its transport and scope
On the host, the CLI uses a Unix socket; inside a container, it uses a session-database transport. The documentation also describes cli_scope values for agent groups: disabled turns off CLI access, group (the default) limits supported resources to the calling group, and global permits broader access. Owner agent groups receive global scope by default. An agent’s ability to perform an operation therefore depends on its scope as well as which resource and action are supported.

What NanoClaw documents about inference costs
The sources reviewed do not establish a standard NanoClaw subscription or a universal bill for model calls. The README says, “NanoClaw has no user accounts.” It describes an optional community-portal account for particular perks, including a hardened image and managed Slack app; that account/perk arrangement is separate from provider inference billing. Inference cost depends on the provider and model configuration. NanoClaw’s changelog says its 2.4.0 release, published by the project in 2026, changed the default Claude model to Opus 5.5 and noted that this affects cost and usage-limit burn. The release says API-key installs moved from Opus 5 and Pro and Team Standard installs from Sonnet. These are release-specific statements, not a guarantee of today’s default for every installation. Consult the project changelog and your installed version’s settings before relying on a default.
Set a model or serving speed
The 2.4.0 release documents an install-wide default model setting and per-group model configuration. To retain a model when updating, the release advises setting NANOCLAW_DEFAULT_MODEL or configuring the group before the update:

ncl groups config update --id <group-id> --model <model>That command’s exact accepted model values depend on the installed version and configured provider. Check local CLI help and current project documentation rather than treating the example placeholder as a literal value.

ncl groups config update --id <group-id> --speed fastThe changelog specifically says Claude fast mode costs more per token. It does not provide a complete price table, a provider-by-provider comparison, or enough information to calculate an individual account’s charges. Check the provider’s current pricing and your account’s usage records for actual rates and totals.
Local Ollama is an alternative, not a cost-free setup
NanoClaw’s official Ollama guide explains how to route inference to a local Ollama endpoint. This can make API inference costs zero because inference runs on the user’s hardware rather than being billed as provider API usage. It still requires compatible hardware, setup, and electricity; the guide does not make those costs disappear or supply a like-for-like price comparison with hosted providers.

The NanoClaw README states: “Your agents, messages, files and keys never leave your machine.” The README also qualifies the arrangement: the host maintains an outbound portal connection for users who opt in to the portal’s perks. Read the project’s current privacy and setup details before enabling optional services.
