A nano-texture screen has a specially textured cover glass designed to make reflected light less conspicuous. It can help when you use a display in bright or changing lighting, but it does not eliminate reflections. Apple describes its nano-texture glass as an option for professionals who work in less-controlled lighting and prefer lower reflectivity.
How does nano-texture glass work?
The texture on the cover glass scatters some incoming reflected light, so reflections may be less noticeable than on a conventional reflective surface. An independent explanation describes the glass as specially etched, while Apple’s technical overview establishes the lower-reflectivity purpose of its optional nano-texture glass. The sources do not provide a detailed manufacturing process or quantified optical measurements.
“Nano-texture” describes the glass surface, not a guarantee that a screen will be reflection-free. The feature is intended to reduce reflectivity, not remove every reflection.

The choice depends most on your lighting and how distracting reflections are in your workspace. Consider these factors before choosing a display configuration:

- Lighting: It may be useful if you work in bright or less-controlled lighting where reflections are a recurring distraction.
- Reflection control: The intended benefit is lower reflectivity; reflections can still be visible.
- Care: Apple gives specific cleaning directions for the nano-texture displays covered by its support article.
- Model and configuration: Nano-texture is an option on particular configurations, not a feature to assume is included on every display in a product family. Check the exact model before buying.
The sources reviewed do not establish a general, quantified effect on resolution, contrast, color, or sharpness. Avoid assuming a universal image-quality penalty or benefit based on those measures.
How should you clean a nano-texture display?
Apple’s support article, published 23 November 2024, applies its instructions to the listed Studio Display, Pro Display XDR, iMac, MacBook Pro, and iPad Pro (M4) models. For dust and smudges, Apple says to use the polishing cloth supplied with the device. For infrequent cleaning of hard-to-remove smudges, it says the cloth may be moistened with a 70% isopropyl alcohol solution. Follow the current cleaning instructions for your exact device and region.

Apple says to hand-wash the cloth with soap and water, rinse it thoroughly, and let it air-dry for at least 24 hours. If you need a replacement, Apple describes its Polishing Cloth as suitable for Apple displays, including nano-texture displays.
