The Nakamichi DRAGON Single 12-inch package is a large, high-connectivity home theater system for buyers who want a separate subwoofer and surround speakers—not a compact soundbar setup. It includes one 12-inch subwoofer, not the dual-subwoofer arrangement found in other DRAGON configurations. Nakamichi lists three HDMI 2.1 inputs, but the bar is 58.1 inches wide and the subwoofer weighs 80 pounds. The key caveat: the independent test results available for DRAGON are for a different, dual-8-inch-subwoofer package, so they do not establish how this Single 12-inch version performs.
What comes with the DRAGON Single 12-inch package?
This review covers Nakamichi’s DRAGON Home Surround Sound System with one 12-inch subwoofer. What Hi-Fi described this single-subwoofer version as an 11.1.6 system when it launched. The package consists of the main soundbar, two Omni-Motion Reference Surrounds, and one subwoofer. It is not the original dual-subwoofer package.
Nakamichi describes the broader DRAGON family as supporting configurations up to 11.4.6, including as many as four wireless subwoofer cabinets. That family maximum is not the configuration reviewed here; do not use its channel or subwoofer count to describe the Single 12-inch bundle.

The manufacturer’s package guide lists the main unit, two surrounds, one 12-inch subwoofer, remote and batteries, a 6.5-foot HDMI 2.1 cable, surround power cables, and power equipment for the main unit and subwoofer. The included HDMI cable can serve for a basic connection to a compatible TV or source.

Will it fit your room and furniture?
The system is physically demanding. Nakamichi lists the soundbar at 58.1 inches wide and 32.1 pounds, each surround at 8.8 pounds, and the 12-inch subwoofer at 80 pounds. Measure the TV stand or wall area before buying, and plan where the large subwoofer can sit without blocking a walkway or other equipment. Delivery and lifting merit advance planning, especially if stairs or tight turns are involved.
The surround and subwoofer audio links are wireless, but that does not make the components battery-powered. Nakamichi describes a 5.8 GHz wireless link for the subwoofers and rear speakers; the surrounds still need wall power, and the main unit and subwoofer also require power connections. Expect cables at each powered component even though audio signals do not need to run from the bar to the surrounds and subwoofer.
Nakamichi says the main unit has six discrete upfiring drivers. Their practical effect will depend on room layout and setup; use the manufacturer’s setup and calibration guidance rather than assuming the format label alone guarantees a particular result in every room.

What connections and formats does it support?
Nakamichi’s published specifications list three HDMI 2.1 inputs and one HDMI 2.1 output with eARC. The manufacturer states passthrough support up to 4K at 120 Hz or 8K at 60 Hz, along with Dolby Vision, HDR/HDR10+, VRR, ALLM, and FRL. For a source device such as a game console, the connection can run through a soundbar input and onward to the TV; eARC provides a route for TV audio back to the system. The source, soundbar, TV, cable, and chosen signal format must all support the features you intend to use—these specifications do not mean every combination will pass every format.
The three HDMI inputs may be useful if several devices need to connect directly to the soundbar. Nakamichi lists USB-A for firmware upgrades only, not general media playback. Wireless Bluetooth is version 5.0 with aptX HD, according to the manufacturer.
Listed audio formats include Dolby Atmos, DTS:X Pro, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby MAT, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS-HD High Resolution Audio, and LPCM up to 7.1 channels. These are format-support claims, not a promise that any particular source or TV will deliver each format; check the output and passthrough capabilities of the equipment in your own signal chain.

What do independent reviews say—and what remains untested?
The available RTINGS review tested a DRAGON configuration with dual opposing 8-inch subwoofers, not the Single 12-inch package. RTINGS reported very high output with little compression, a wide and immersive soundstage, strong center-channel performance, broad audio-format support, and 4K120 HDMI 2.1 passthrough for that tested configuration.

RTINGS also found that emphasized bass could bleed into the midrange and obscure dialogue. It noted the absence of a dedicated dialogue-enhancement feature and a graphic EQ, and said the system suited larger rooms where high output is welcome but benefits from careful setup. Those observations belong to the dual-8-inch test configuration; they are not measured findings for the Single 12-inch version.
As of February 3, 2026, What Hi-Fi said it had not tested the Single 12-inch package. Its three-star verdict and description of the earlier DRAGON configuration’s overall audio as “harsh and overbearing” concern that earlier review, not this bundle. The same outlet described immersive surround and controlled bass as positives for the earlier system. Neither that verdict nor RTINGS’ configuration-specific findings should be treated as a test result for the Single 12-inch package.

- PRIME SPECIAL, WHILE SUPPLIES LAST @ $1677 (save $822). Built on 70+ years of audio legacy, this wireless surround sound system features a one-of-a-kind 11.2.6-ch surround sound architecture designed as a benchmark for the category. 6 discrete height channels deliver hyper-real overhead effects and a more realistic 3D soundstage. Elevated plug-and-play performance made simple.
- Dual 10" wireless subs add greater low-frequency authority, while bipolar height speakers fire from both sides and above to create the presence of 6 discrete surround sound channels. The result is precise, intelligible vocals and a truly immersive 360° experience.
- IMPORTANT SIZE NOTICE: Soundbar: 4.5" H x 54.0" W x 9.0" D / 32.5 lbs, Subwoofer (Each): 22.5" H x 12.6" W x 12.8" D / 32.7 lbs, Bipolar Surround Speaker (Each): 9.9" H x 7.9" W x 7.8" D / 8.3 lbs. SHIPS IN THREE BOXES. This is a full-scale home surround sound system, not a compact soundbar.
- ✅ The soundbar’s wide 54" chassis is built to move serious air because real theater-scale sound requires physical size and volume. The result is a massive, lifelike front soundstage with crystal clear dialogue that drags you straight into the action from the first second.
- ✅ DUAL 10” SUBWOOFERS deliver deeper bass with greater speed and definition. The flared port design moves air efficiently, producing powerful impact for action scenes and subtle low end texture for music and dialogue. The result is room-filling bass you can feel that remains clean, balanced and composed at any volume.
How does it compare with the Samsung HW-Q990D?
RTINGS compared the dual-8-inch DRAGON package with the Samsung HW-Q990D, not with a test of the Single 12-inch version. In that comparison, RTINGS described the Samsung as lower-priced, more balanced by default, and more customizable. It described DRAGON as having a wider soundstage, DTS:X Pro support, three HDMI inputs, and expansion options up to four subwoofers.
Use that comparison as a decision framework rather than a current head-to-head verdict. The cited Samsung is the HW-Q990D, and the comparison may not reflect newer models or current prices. Compare the exact bundles and check present pricing; consider whether you prioritize default tonal balance and adjustment options or DRAGON’s extra HDMI inputs, physical scale, and subwoofer expansion.

Nakamichi says purchases from its official US web store or authorized retailers carry a one-year US parts-and-labor warranty. Its FAQ describes a 45-calendar-day returns period and says free returns are limited to the US and governed by its returns conditions. The product page advertises a 45-day risk-free trial and price guarantee for direct orders; review the linked seller terms for eligibility and conditions before relying on them.
Before purchase, verify that the listing is specifically the Single 12-inch package, confirm the current price and included equipment, and check the seller’s return and warranty terms. Nakamichi’s FAQ names Amazon as an authorized domestic retailer, but that does not confirm a current listing for this exact bundle. The product page also lists optional wall mounts and speaker stands; whether they are useful depends on your placement plan.
Quick Recap
Who should consider it?
- Consider it if you have room for a 58.1-inch bar and an 80-pound subwoofer, want multiple HDMI inputs, and prefer a large surround system with a separate subwoofer.
- Compare alternatives first if your priorities are a smaller footprint, less demanding placement, or a system whose default dialogue and tonal balance have been independently assessed.
- Wait for configuration-specific evidence if sound quality is the deciding factor: the cited independent DRAGON findings concern other subwoofer configurations, and the Single 12-inch package had not been tested by What Hi-Fi as of February 3, 2026.
