Union Health Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda is scheduled to lay the foundation stone for the ICMR Centre for High Altitude Medicine and Public Health Research (ICMR-CHAMP) in Keylong, Himachal Pradesh, on October 12, 2026. As of October 11, the ceremony is still upcoming; the centre’s research and proposed services are not reported as operational.
What ICMR-CHAMP is
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), under the Department of Health Research in the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, is establishing the centre in Keylong, in Himachal Pradesh’s Lahaul & Spiti district. The government describes it as ICMR’s first dedicated centre for high-altitude medicine and public health research.
The Ministry’s stated rationale is that high altitude, severe weather, difficult terrain, geographical isolation and climate variability can affect health needs and access to care. The centre is intended to build research, innovation and capacity for high-altitude and climate-sensitive regions.
