Choose an image-generation step in n8n when you want original artwork from a prompt. For social cards, certificates, or PDF reports that must show consistent layouts and changing data, use a reusable template-rendering service instead. n8n documents an OpenAI image-generation operation; APITemplate.io documents dynamic image and PDF rendering with an n8n integration.
Choose the right image-generation approach
The key distinction is whether you need a new visual or a predictable document. A prompt-based image model is suited to producing artwork, such as an illustration or background. A template-rendering service is better suited to filling a known layout with names, dates, figures, or other workflow data.
| Need | Prompt-based image generation | Template-driven rendering |
|---|---|---|
| Original artwork | A good fit when the desired deliverable is an image generated from a description. n8n OpenAI image operations documentation | Can produce template-based graphics; its principal advantage here is populating reusable layouts. APITemplate.io product documentation |
| Repeatable text and data fields | The cited n8n node documentation does not establish reliable deterministic typography or document layout. | Dynamic JSON and reusable templates are documented, making this the stronger fit for personalized cards, certificates, and reports. Generate original artwork from a prompt
The n8n OpenAI node documentation describes an image-generation operation that accepts a text prompt. Its options include choosing a model and, where supported, configuring resolution and style. You can choose to receive URL output or binary image data. The node also documents image editing with binary image inputs. See the n8n image operations reference for the available settings.

Do not rely on it alone for a certificate or report whose names, dates, and typography must appear exactly as supplied; the cited documentation does not establish that exact text placement or branded layouts will be dependable.

Create consistent social cards, certificates, or PDF reports
For repeatable documents, create a template and populate it with structured workflow data. APITemplate.io describes generating images and PDFs from templates and dynamic JSON, including social graphics, certificates, reports, and banners. APITemplate.io’s product information explains the template-rendering use case.
Its n8n guide describes two integration routes: the built-in node uses the V1 API, while an HTTP Request node can call V2. The guide presents HTTP Request as the recommended route for V2 performance improvements and features. Treat this version guidance as provider-specific and confirm the current API and credential instructions when building a workflow; do not assume that the built-in node uses V2. Read the APITemplate.io n8n guide and consult its API documentation.
Use the built-in node
Choose this route if the documented V1 integration meets your needs. The node reference lists Account/Get, Image/Create, and PDF/Create operations. The integration guide provides the n8n setup details.

Call the API with HTTP Request
Choose this route when you need the V2 approach described by the provider. Follow its current API and credential instructions rather than transferring settings from the built-in V1 node. After the render request, the guide describes a download_url in the result. An HTTP Request step can download the generated file, which the workflow can then send by email, store in cloud storage, or return in a webhook response. See the integration guide for the documented flow.
Connect the generated asset to the rest of your workflow
Think of image creation as one stage in a larger automation: collect inputs, generate the artwork or render the template, then pass the resulting URL or file to its destination. For the APITemplate.io flow, the guide describes retrieving the file from the returned download_url before forwarding or storing it. For prompt-generated artwork, choose URL or binary output according to what the next workflow step accepts.
Rank #3
- Use a URL when a following step can fetch or pass along a hosted image.
- Use binary output when a later step needs the image file itself, subject to that step’s input requirements.
- For a rendered PDF or image, include a download step if the destination needs the file rather than a link.
A published social-post workflow pattern
n8n has published an example that collects business and topic inputs through an n8n form, uses OpenAI to produce social text and an image prompt, generates a matching image, and returns an HTML preview. It demonstrates one possible workflow shape, not a guarantee that every account, node version, or credential setup will work without adaptation. Browse n8n’s workflow examples.
