Docker can run n8n, but a container by itself is not a backup. To keep workflows, credentials, and other instance data through container replacement or maintenance, plan for persistent storage, protect the database and credential-encryption key, and keep an independent backup that you have tested restoring. The official documentation identifies Docker and n8n Cloud as ways to use n8n, but the exact current Compose configuration and restore commands are not established by the documentation links available here; this guide therefore explains the decisions to make without guessing at commands or mount paths.

Choose who will operate the n8n instance

n8n presents Docker-based self-hosting and hosted n8n Cloud as options for using the service (n8n). With Docker, you choose and maintain the runtime and its storage and backup arrangements. With Cloud, you use n8n’s hosted option rather than managing the container yourself. The available documentation does not establish comparative prices, uptime, plan limits, or feature parity, so those should be checked directly before choosing.

  • Choose Docker if you want to operate the deployment and are prepared to take responsibility for persistent storage, backups, restoration, and maintenance.
  • Choose Cloud if you do not want to run and maintain the container infrastructure yourself.

What must survive a container replacement

A container is the runtime boundary, not a guarantee that its data will outlive it. Whether instance data persists depends on the storage and database choices in the deployment. A safe setup needs more than a container restart policy: it needs durable storage, a way to back up the database and relevant instance data, and a recovery plan.

Before relying on a Compose deployment, confirm these details in the current official Docker installation and Compose instructions. The documentation links available for this article do not establish exact mount paths, image tags, database defaults, environment-variable names, or backup and restore commands, so none are supplied here.

  • Persistent instance storage: identify what data is written to the container and what is mounted on durable storage that remains available when the container is recreated.
  • Database: establish which database the deployment uses and how that database is backed up and restored. Protecting a data directory alone may not cover a separately stored database.
  • Credential encryption key: determine how the instance protects saved credentials, retain the key securely, and ensure it is available when restoring or recreating the instance. A backup that lacks a required key may not restore usable credentials.
  • Independent backup: keep a backup separate from the live container and its active storage. If the only copy is lost with the host or volume, it cannot serve as recovery.
  • Restore test: verify that the backup can actually recreate a working instance, including access to saved credentials.

Backups are different from persistent storage

Persistent storage helps data remain available across routine container replacement; it does not protect against loss or damage to the storage itself. A backup is a separate recoverable copy. Plan to back up the components your deployment depends on, including its database and any required instance data and encryption key, and document how to restore them together.

  1. Review the official instructions for the exact deployment configuration you use, and identify every persistent data location and database.
  2. Choose a backup process that copies the needed data independently of the live container or volume.
  3. Store the encryption key securely and make sure the recovery procedure can retrieve it without placing it casually alongside exposed backup files.
  4. Test restoration in a separate environment before you depend on the backup. Confirm that workflows load and that credentials are usable.

Do not use visible execution records as an archive. n8n’s executions documentation says that deleting a workflow also deletes its execution history (Executions).

Keep the deployment secure as well as durable

Persistent storage protects against some kinds of data loss; it does not make an instance secure. n8n’s security audit can be run through the CLI, public API, or an n8n node. Its report covers credentials, database use, filesystem interactions, nodes, and instance settings. The audit documentation also identifies issues it may surface, including potentially risky built-in nodes, community or custom nodes, unprotected webhooks, missing security settings, and outdated instances (Security audit).

  • Control who can reach and administer the instance, and handle secrets carefully.
  • Review network exposure and webhook access rather than assuming a private data volume protects a publicly reachable service.
  • Review updates and run the security audit using the documented method appropriate to your deployment.

Understand the scope of S3 binary-data storage

n8n documents S3 external storage for binary data created by workflow executions. The documentation identifies this feature as available on self-hosted Enterprise plans; it is not a general-purpose backup of workflows, credentials, the database, or the complete instance (Binary data).

The same documentation discusses lifecycle configuration for pruning old binary data and notes that behavior matters when changing storage modes. It says S3-compatible services such as Cloudflare R2 and Backblaze B2 can be used but are not officially supported. Check the current documentation and plan requirements before configuring this advanced feature. It is not required for an ordinary Docker setup and does not replace a restorable backup.

Decide whether Docker fits your maintenance capacity

Docker is a reasonable choice when you want operational control and can maintain storage, database protection, credential-key retention, security review, upgrades, and tested recovery. If you do not want to own those deployment tasks, consider n8n Cloud. The available official overview confirms both choices, but does not establish service-level or price comparisons (n8n).
