MyState Bank’s Contents Standard is a listed-event contents policy for renters, but several useful protections—accidental damage at home, electrical motor burnout and portable contents away from home—are optional. Before choosing it, check the policy wording, value your belongings, and compare a quote with Contents Plus and other policies. Insurance Australia Limited (IAL) issues the cover under the CGU brand; MyState distributes it under agreement and says it does not guarantee claims.
Who provides the insurance?
MyState Bank promotes and distributes the policy, while IAL is the insurer under the CGU brand. MyState says it acts under its own Australian financial services licence and an agreement with IAL; the insurer’s Product Disclosure Statement (PDS) and your Certificate of Insurance govern the policy and claim. MyState states that it does not guarantee claims. MyState’s home insurance page explains the arrangement.
What Contents Standard lists as covered
MyState’s summary lists cover for contents against events including fire, flood or rainwater run-off, theft, storm, escape of water or liquid, impact, lightning, earthquake and accidental breakage of glass. Liability is also listed. These are summary-level descriptions, not a substitute for the policy’s definitions, conditions, exclusions and limits. Contents Standard is contents cover; do not treat it as cover for the building you rent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe product summary also lists benefits such as contents in storage, in transit or in the open air; food spoilage; identity theft; moving to a new home; storage costs; student belongings away from home; visitors’ belongings; temporary accommodation; debris removal; and replacement of keys and locks. Each benefit may have eligibility rules and caps in the policy wording. Check the current PDS and schedule before relying on any particular benefit.

Which useful protections cost extra?
For Contents Standard, MyState marks accidental damage at home, electrical motor burnout and portable contents away from home as optional. Contents Plus automatically includes accidental damage, while portable contents is shown as an optional or additional benefit. Compare what the quote includes rather than assuming a benefit is active because it appears in a product summary.
- Accidental damage at home: Consider it if accidental spills or breakages are a meaningful risk in your household.
- Electrical motor burnout: Check the definition and limits if you want protection relating to motorised appliances.
- Portable contents: Price it if you regularly take phones, laptops, cameras or other belongings outside the home. Confirm which items, locations and events are covered under your selected option.
MyState’s cover summary shows these options, but the policy wording and your Certificate of Insurance determine the actual cover.

How valuables and belongings outside the home are treated
MyState says works of art, collections, jewellery and watches share a total limit of $2,500 under general contents. Selecting Valuable Contents can provide a higher level of cover. If your belongings in those categories are worth more than the shared limit, check how the policy requires them to be listed and confirm the selected cover on your schedule. MyState’s FAQ describes the limit and optional cover.
Portable contents means belongings that can be taken outside the home, and MyState says the optional Portable Contents benefit is required for that cover. Do not assume that a specific phone, laptop or other item is insured away from home without checking the option, terms and schedule.

How to decide whether the cover fits
- Make an inventory. List your belongings room by room and estimate what it would cost to replace them. MyState recommends listing items and offers an insurance calculator to estimate average-quality contents per room.
- Document ownership. MyState’s valuation guide recommends taking photos and keeping receipts. The guide is marked updated 28 July 2022, so use it as a practical checklist—not as current policy wording. MyState’s guide and insurance information provide its checklist.
- Identify the gaps that matter to you. Review whether you need accidental damage, motor burnout or portable contents, and check whether the general-contents limit for valuables is enough.
- Get a renter-specific quote. Compare Contents Standard with Contents Plus and other suitable policies using the same contents sum insured and selected options.
- Read the current policy pack before buying. Verify definitions, exclusions, claims conditions, benefit caps and settlement terms in the PDS, and check selected cover and excesses on the Certificate of Insurance.
What to compare in a quote
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Standard versus Plus | Whether accidental damage is included or optional, and which other benefits are selected. |
| Portable contents | Whether the option is active and which items, locations and events it covers. |
| Valuables | Sublimits for jewellery, watches, collections, art and electronics, plus any way to insure higher-value items. |
| Weather and water events | Current PDS definitions and exclusions for flood, rainwater run-off, storm and escape of water. |
| Contents sum insured and claims settlement | Whether your estimate is sufficient and whether settlement is by replacement, repair or another method defined by the policy. |
| Price and excess | Base and optional-benefit premiums, applicable discounts and payment arrangements, and standard or chosen excesses. |
| Additional benefits | Eligibility conditions and caps for temporary accommodation, storage, transit and moving. |
MyState’s public summary does not establish a renter-specific premium or exact excess. It says excesses may apply and directs customers to the Certificate of Insurance for the applicable amount. Get a quote and review your certificate rather than relying on a general figure.

What the public summary cannot settle
The exact exclusions, definitions, claim conditions, settlement rules and benefit sublimits need to be checked in the current policy wording. MyState directs customers to the PDS and Certificate of Insurance for those details. The linked PDS and Home Contents Key Fact Sheet were not accessible during preparation, so this review cannot verify those provisions or give a definitive price or excess. Obtain the current policy pack and quote before deciding whether a specific loss, item or circumstance is covered. MyState’s home insurance page links to the relevant product information.
