The Lionel No. 773 is a large 1:48-scale 4-6-4 Hudson, but “a 773” is not one single production model. Lionel sold the first postwar version for 1950, brought the name back for 1964–1966, and later issued commemorative and modern catalog versions. My own fascination began with a child’s “mystery engine”; the real discovery came years later, when the cab stamping, tender, packaging and small mechanical details revealed which chapter of the 773 story I had.
Why the 773 feels like more than a train
Collectors often call the 773 simply “The Hudson.” Its imposing proportions and scale fidelity made it one of Lionel’s most coveted postwar locomotives. The design’s conceptual ancestor was Lionel’s prewar 700E scale Hudson, produced from 1937 to 1942. In a 2023 TCA article, longtime member Art Hayes attributed an estimated $65,000–$75,000 tooling investment to Joshua Lionel Cowen. That figure is an attributed estimate, not audited corporate accounting.
Don Miller captured the model’s mystique in the “773 Hudson Anthology,” published in the Ozark Division Newsletter in the third quarter of 2023: “The 773 was truly a mystery engine.” That description fits an engine found without its original paperwork: its appearance may suggest one year while its tender or box points to another.

The 773 production timeline
| Lineage | Known period | Identifying context |
|---|---|---|
| Postwar original | 1950 only | 1:48-scale 4-6-4 Hudson, commonly paired with a 2426W 12-wheel Lionel Lines tender |
| Postwar reissue | 1964–1966 | Different tender and detail combinations, including 736W Pennsylvania and documented 773W New York Central configurations |
| Modern commemorative chapters | 1999 and 2001 examples documented | Separate modern releases; a 2001 U.S.-made example used remaining parts |
The year stamped or printed on a locomotive is only a starting point. A complete identification compares the engine, tender, accessories and packaging as one provenance record.

How I identify which 773 I have
1. Read the cab-number stamping
The 1950 archive description records silver cab numbers, while later versions are associated with white numbers. Paint can fade or be altered, so treat color as evidence rather than proof. Photograph both cab sides in neutral light before cleaning anything.
2. Identify the tender before judging the engine
The 1950 version is associated with the deluxe semi-scale 2426W, a 12-wheel whistling tender lettered “Lionel Lines.” The 1964 version used the smaller 736W tender with Pennsylvania lettering. A 773W streamlined New York Central tender is another documented configuration. Check the tender number, roadname, wheel count and shell details together; a swapped tender can make an otherwise correct locomotive look like the wrong year.

3. Inspect the visible equipment
- Wire handrails and flagstaffs: confirm whether they are present, intact or replaced.
- Headlight lens and housing: compare the lens shape and signs of replacement.
- Smoke equipment: establish whether the smoke unit is present and functional, without running it dry.
- Drive-wheel hardware: look for alterations, replacement drivers or non-original screws.
- Magnetraction and operating headlight: record what is actually installed; features vary by version.
Do not assume that every production year has every feature. Establish the exact lineage first, then compare the equipment expected for that issue.

Original boxes and inserts often preserve evidence that the locomotive itself cannot. Look for the box number, cardboard liner, display board, instruction sheet and accessories. A documented 1995 collector example, a No. 773-E, retained engine box 773-131, liner 773-130, a Super O display board with three track sections, an instruction sheet dated 8/64 and an unopened bottle of smoke pellets. Those items do not merely increase completeness; together they support a 1964-era provenance.

Keep every paper with the set. Photograph box ends and date stamps, and note whether the packaging appears to have been made for the locomotive or substituted later. A display board or instruction sheet that matches the tender and cab details is stronger evidence than a seller’s verbal claim.
Comparing two 773s fairly
| Comparison axis | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Production lineage | 1950 original, 1964–1966 reissue or later commemorative release |
| Tender correctness | 2426W, 736W or 773W; roadname, wheel count and shell details |
| Cosmetic originality | Cab-number color, lettering, handrails, flags, headlight lens and paint |
| Completeness | Original box, liner, display board, instruction sheet and accessories |
| Operating equipment | Smoke, headlight, Magnetraction and any control electronics |
This approach prevents a polished but mismatched locomotive from outranking a less glossy, documented example. Condition still matters, but originality and completeness explain why two engines carrying the same number can differ substantially.

Do not confuse a modern 773 with a 1950 original
Later releases form separate chapters. The 1999 Century Club version and a 2001 final U.S.-made example built from remaining parts are not postwar 1950 production. Catalog material also documents a modern No. 773 in the 2005 No. 13150 Super O Steam Freight set with TrainMaster Command Control, RailSounds, a Pullmor motor and Magne-Traction. Those specifications describe that modern catalog configuration, not the equipment of a 1950 locomotive.
What a 773 is worth
There is no reliable single price for “a Lionel 773.” Value depends on the exact production lineage, correct tender, cosmetic originality, completeness and operating condition. Without a dated sale record for the same configuration, quoting a precise figure creates false confidence. Before buying or selling, request clear photos of both cab sides, the tender number and lettering, wheels, smoke and headlight equipment, box labels and every included accessory. A current listing is not proof that an engine is original, complete or compatible with a replacement part.

Restoration without erasing the story
For documented 1950 or 1964–1966 examples, preserve original parts whenever possible. Label removed screws and handrails, store replaced components in a bag with the engine’s notes, and test smoke and lighting cautiously. Search for “Lionel 773 replacement parts” only after matching the part to the locomotive’s lineage; visually similar parts may belong to a different issue. Sellers’ photographs and specifications must establish compatibility before purchase.
The most satisfying outcome is not simply a running Hudson. It is a defensible account of how the locomotive, tender, paperwork and packaging belong together—and an honest record of anything replaced.
